LINEAR EQUATIONS IN TWO VARIABLES

Let a, b and c be real numbers such that a and b are not both zero. A linear equation in two
variables is an equation that can be written in the form 𝑎𝑥 + 𝑏𝑦 = 𝑐. This form is called standard
form.
The graph of a linear equation is a straight line. Equations of a straight line can be written in
a.) general form: 𝑎𝑥 + 𝑏𝑦 + 𝑐 = 0
b.) standard form: 𝑎𝑥 + 𝑏𝑦 = 𝑐
c.) slope-Intercept form: y = mx + b
Examples of Linear Equations in Two Variables Activity 1: Rewrite the following linear equations
Standard Form Slope-Intercept Form in the form 𝑦 = 𝑚𝑥 + 𝑏. Identify m and b.
𝑚 𝑏
𝒂𝒙 + 𝒃𝒚 = 𝒄 𝒚 = 𝒎𝒙 + 𝒃
Standard Form Slope-Intercept Form
1. 𝑥 + 𝑦 = 7 𝑦 = −𝑥 + 7 −1 7 𝑚 𝑏
𝒂𝒙 + 𝒃𝒚 = 𝒄 𝒚 = 𝒎𝒙 + 𝒃

2. 5𝑥 + 𝑦 = −3 𝑦 = −5𝑥 − 3 −5 −3 1. 𝑥 + 𝑦 = 5

3. 6𝑥 + 3𝑦 = 12 𝑦 = −2𝑥 + 4 −2 4 2. 𝑥 − 2𝑦 = 6

7 7 3. 5𝑥 + 𝑦 = 8
4. 7𝑥 − 2𝑦 = 2 𝑦 = 𝑥−1 -1
2 2
4. −3𝑥 + 𝑦 = 9

5. 5𝑥 + 10𝑦 = 20
B. GRAPHING LINEAR EQUATIONS USING THE SLOPE AND Y-INTERCEPT
Steps for graphing an equation using the slope and y-intercept:
1. Identify the Slope and y-intercept: In the slope-intercept form 𝒚 = 𝒎𝒙 + 𝒃
• m is the slope.
• b is the y-intercept (where the line crosses the y-axis).
2. Plot the Y-Intercept: Start by plotting the point (𝟎, 𝒃) on the graph.
3. Use the Slope:
• From the y-intercept, apply the rise and run to find the next point:
o Rise: Move vertically
o Run: Move horizontally
(Make sure you go up to the right if it’s positive and down to the right if it’s negative.)
4. Draw the Line: Connect the points with a straight line extending in both directions.
𝟏
Example 1: Graph the linear equation 𝒚 = 𝟐 𝒙 + 𝟏

𝑏 = 1 (starting point): (0,1)

1 𝑟𝑖𝑠𝑒
𝑚= =
2 𝑟𝑢𝑛 (𝑡𝑜 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑟𝑖𝑔ℎ𝑡)

Activity 2:
Graph the following linear equation using the slope and y-intercept.
𝟏
1. 𝒚=𝒙+𝟓 𝑏= 𝑚= 2. 𝒚=− 𝒙−𝟑 𝑏= 𝑚=
𝟐

𝟑
3. 𝒚 = −𝟐𝒙 + 𝟒 4. 𝒚 = 𝒙+𝟒
𝟐

𝑏= 𝑏=
𝑚= 𝑚=
