INTERNSHIP CONCEPT

PLACEMENTS OF STUDENTS DURING THE RECESS SEMESTER

Introduction
Field attachment is vital in the production of graduates with “hands on” experience. This is in
line with Mountains of the Moon University viewpoint of producing graduates who are practical-
oriented and possessing job related competences required by their future employers. In this
perspective, finalists of bachelors and diplomas but also second years of BAMC must go for the
Field Placement exercise.

Objectives
The purpose of field attachment at Mountains of the Moon University is to produce practically
oriented graduates that meet the required job-related competences required by their future
employers. Additionally, it serves as a linkage between the University and various partners who
consume services and/or products of the University.

The specific objectives of the field attachment program are to:

a) Enable students get hands-on experience in the real-life situations they are expected to
work in when they graduate.
b) Provide an opportunity for students to apply the principles and techniques theoretically
learnt into real-life problem solving situations.
c) Provide an opportunity for students and academic staff to interact with the university
stakeholders and potential employers to appreciate field situations. This will also generate
information for curricula review and improvement.
d) Develop student understanding of work ethics, employment demands, responsibilities and
opportunities.
e) Enhance and strengthen linkages between Mountains of the Moon University and
communities around.
f) Enable students easily get employment in the areas of their specialization as they will
have interacted with prospective employers during the field attachment.
g) Inform students’ research- The students’ experience in the field can form a basis for a
research project.

Expected benefits from the field attachment

Implementation of field attachment is through partnership between the University, students and
the community. Commitment to this partnership rests on mutual benefits for all the key partners.
The expected benefits of the program for the different parties include:

University Partners
 Opportunity to get involved in the training and review of programs at Mountains of the
Moon University.
 Exposure to a pool of potential employees from which to select. In this case, it would also
reduce costs of induction/orientation of new employees.
 Additional human resource for effective and efficient service delivery.

Mountains of the Moon University

 Opportunity to appreciate client demands and the quality of graduates required to fulfill
these demands.
 Potential for enhanced research and development cooperation with the various partners.
 Opportunity to access training facilities and resources that may not available at Mountains
of the Moon University.

Students
 Acquisition of new knowledge and practical experiences.
 Improved confidence in problem solving.
 Opportunity to relate to different categories of people likely to be met in the real life
situation.
 Exposure to the demands and challenges of the workplace.
 Opportunity to meet and work with potential employers.
 Improved appreciation of the profession and therefore better work ethics.

The Country
 Exposure to the technical skills of the students which adds to a pool of quality workforce in
the country.
 Awareness and identification of the country problems and solutions.
 Influencing change in attitude.
 Country’s access to University services.

Duration
All students are expected at their field attachment stations during the first week of June. The
field placement exercise is expected to last 8 weeks, thus January and February 2025.

Students' records
Students on field attachment are required to keep a field notebook (or log book) where they will
enter their daily record of the activities they are engaged in as well as new knowledge and
innovations learnt. The on-site supervisor (field supervisor) shall assess the daily records in the
logbook. In addition, the field attachment logbooks shall be assessed and signed by the academic
supervisors (from the university) each time they visit the student (s) in the field. At the end of the
field attachment period, the student shall produce a report of their field attachment activities and
experiences.

Supervision
There wil1 be two distinct levels of supervision: site level day-to-day supervision by the field
supervisor and the academic supervisor from the University. Each site/student will be visited by
the academic supervisors. During the visit, the academic supervisor will interact with the student
on field attachment, field supervisor/other relevant officials and also visit the field attachment
sites to acquaint himself/herself with the activities of the student.

Evaluation
The field attachment, being part and parcel of the academic program, must be assessed and
graded. The assessment is at four levels; the field supervisor, the academic supervisor, the
report, and report presentation. The field attachment grades will also appear on the students’
transcript as an independent course. Given the duration and intensity of the field attachment
program and the rigor of assessment (by field supervisor, academic supervisor, field attachment
report and oral presentation), the field attachment carries an overall weighting of 5.0 credit units.
