Solution: For a Normal distribution given that

     ,    x  ,  > 0

substitute in this equation, then required p.d.f is

2. If Z is a SNV, what is its mean and variance?

Solution: Given Z is a SNV . ie., Z ~ N(0, 1) Then its Mean is 0 and Variance is 1. Or S.D is also 1.
i.e., E(Z) = 0 and V(Z) = 1.

4. If X is a Normal distribution with parameters µ , σ2 find P (X ≥ µ ).

Solution: For a Normal distribution P (X ≥ µ ) = 0.5 .

5. If X is a Normal distribution with parameters µ , σ2 .What will be the values of odd ordered
moments.
Solution: For a Normal distribution all odd ordered moments are zero. ie. μ1 = 0; μ3 = 0 etc.,

6. If Z is a SNV , find P(Z > 0).

Solution: For a Normal distribution P (Z ≥ 0 ) = P(Z > 0) = 0.5 .

7. Name a distribution in which mean, median and mode are equal.

Solution: For a Normal distribution Mean = Median = Mode = μ.

Solution: Normal distribution is a symmetrical distribution then Mean = Median = Mode = μ.

we know that Q2 = P50 = D5 = Median. Given Q2 = 60, Here Mean = Q2 = P50 = D5 =Median
= Mode = μ. then Mode = 60.

12. If X is Normal Distribution with mean = 10 and variance = 9, Convert X to S N V.

Solution : Given X~ N(μ = 10, σ2 = 9) define

put μ = 10, σ = 3 then is the required S.N.V.

13. Under what conditions Binomial distribution tends to Normal distribution ?

Solution: Let X~ B(n, p), if n is too large i.e., n tends to infinity (n→∞) then Binomial distribution
tends to Normal distribution.

i.e., P(µ-2σ < X < µ+2σ ) = 0.6826
i.e., using diagram

0.6826
- +
µ
µ - 2σ µ + 2σ

and probability within 3σ neighborhood of µ

i.e., P(µ-3σ < X < µ+3σ ) = 0.9973

i.e., using diagram

0.9973
- +
µ
µ - 3σ µ + 3σ

15. If X is normally distributed with mean 8 and variance 4.5, write down the distribution of

Solution: For a Normal distribution,

, substitute value of µ= 8 and σ = 4.5 in Z ,

then is Standard Normal Variate.
