Lets Learn Error Correction! What Is It?: Learner: Touches Blue

The document outlines a four-step error correction procedure used after a child makes an incorrect response to a demand or stimulus. This method aims to provide reinforcement, positive feedback, and promote learning through repetition. It includes phases of teaching, transferring, distracting, and testing to ensure the child learns the correct response effectively.

Lets Learn Error Correction!

What is it? Error corrections occur after a child makes an incorrect prompted or
independent response to a demand or discriminative stimuli.

There are many styles of error correction, but for the purpose of this training we will
focus on one type; the four-step error correction procedure

Note: The four-step error correction procedure is not appropriate for all children and
alternative methods of teaching may be highlighted within a child’s treatment plan.

Why do we do it? The error correction procedure allows the learner access to
reinforcement, provides positive feedback, and promotes learning through repetition of
the correction response!

The how:

TEACH
Instructor: Issues SD to the learner (prompt the correct response in errorless learning
or allow independent response to occur, then prompt correct response)

Learner: Emits an error – if correct response emitted, no error correction is provided

TRANSFER
Instructor: Re issues SD and allow for independent or working prompt level response

Learner: Emits correct response – move on to DISTRACT phase

OR
Emits incorrect response – revert back to TEACH phase

DISTRACT
Instructor: Administer 2-5 hi- EXAMPLE
probability demands/tasks Instructor: “touch red”
Learner: *touches blue*
Learner: Provides correct response Instructor: *Provides gestural prompt for student
to touch red*
TEST Learner: *touches red*
Instructor: Re-deliver original SD Instructor: “Where’s red?”
Learner: Independently touches red
Learner: Emits correct response Instructor: “touch your head” Learner responds*
“find car” Learner responds*
“show me clapping hands” Learner responds*
“touch red”
Learner: *touches red*
Instructor: issues secondary reinforcer, i.e. praise
