ASSIGNMENT-2 (Short Answer type)

Subject – Design of Transmission System B. Tech, Mechanical 3rd Year

Belt Drive
1. A belt drive has a larger pulley diameter of 600 mm and a smaller pulley diameter of 200 mm. The

center distance is 1000 mm. Calculate the belt length.

2. The velocity ratio of a belt drive is 3:1, with the larger pulley rotating at 600 RPM. Find the speed

of the smaller pulley.

3. A belt drive transmits 5 kW of power at a belt speed of 10 m/s. If the tension in the tight side is

300 N, find the slack side tension.

4. Given a coefficient of friction of 0.3 and an angle of wrap of 170 degrees, calculate the ratio of belt

tensions.

5. For an open belt drive with pulley diameters of 400 mm and 200 mm and a center distance of 1200

mm, determine the angle of wrap for the smaller pulley.

6. A belt transmits power with a velocity of 15 m/s and a tension difference of 150 N. Find the power

transmitted.

7. If the efficiency of a belt drive system is 85% and input power is 10 kW, find the output power.

8. Given a belt drive system with μ = 0.25, θ = 160 degrees, find the belt tension ratio.

9. A belt moves at 12 m/s with a power transmission of 4 kW. Find the force exerted by the belt.

10. A belt drive operates between a 500 mm and 250 mm pulley with a center distance of 1500 mm.
Find the length of the cross belt.

Spur Gear
1. The load on a gear tooth is 50 kN. If the gear is transmitting a torque of 6000 Nm, the diameter of the
gear is approximately (consider pressure angle as 20° and cos 20° = 0.94)

Ans:- 0.25m

2. Two mating spur gears have 40 and 120 teeth respectively. The pinion rotates at 1200 rpm and transmits
a torque of 20 Nm. Calculate the torque transmitted by the gear .

Ans :- 60 Nm
Bevel Gear
1. A pair of helical gears consists of a 25 teeth pinion meshing with a 50 teeth gear. The normal module is
4 mm. Find the required value of the helix angle, if the centre distance is exactly 165 mm.
Ans :- 24.62°
2. A pair of parallel helical gears consists of a 20 teeth pinion and the velocity ratio is 3 : 1. The helix angle
is 15° and the normal module is 5 mm. Calculate
(i) the pitch circle diameters of the pinion and the gear; and
(ii) the centre distance
Ans :- (i) 103.53 and 310.58 mm (ii) 207.06 mm
