Communication Patterns Questionnaire (CPQ, Christensen &
Heavey, 1990, 1993)
This scale assesses both constructive communication and demand/withdraw
communication patterns. There are 11 items which are rated on a scale of 1-9 where
1 is very unlikely and 9 is very likely.
The CPQ may used qualitatively, or subscales may be calculated as follows:
1. Constructive Communication = (A2 + B4 + B6)
2. Total amount of demand-withdraw communication = A3a + A3b + B7a + B7b +
B8a + B8b
3. I demand/Partner withdraws communication = A3a + B7a + B8a
4. Partner demands/I withdraw communication = A3b + B7b + B8b
