Kaliyug Keval Naam Adhaara ....

Raganuga Bhaktiman Das

(H.V. Ravishankar)

(Part 1 of 4)

“कलियुग केवल नाम अधारा, सुमिर-सुमिर नर उतरहिं पारा”

Kaliyug keval Naam adhaara,

Sumir-sumir nar uthin paara.

The article presents this truth purely from the perspective of Vedic
scriptures—such as the Vedas, Puranas, Upanishads, Ramayana, and
Bhagavatam.

The focus is on scriptural authority and spiritual clarity.

“Naam Smaran in Kali Yuga: The Vedic Key to Liberation”

Introduction

Sant Tulsidas, the great saint-poet and devotee of Lord Rama, declared
with absolute confidence:

“कलियुग केवल नाम अधारा,

सुमिर-सुमिर नर उतरहिं पारा।”
Kaliyug keval Naam adhaara,
Sumir-sumir nar utarhin paara.

Translation: In Kali Yuga, only the Name of the Lord is the foundation. By
remembering and chanting it again and again, people can cross over the
ocean of material existence.

This profound declaration is not a poetic exaggeration, but a reflection of

the highest truths embedded in the Vedas, Puranas, and other ancient
scriptures.

In this article, we will explore the spiritual, philosophical, and practical

meaning of this couplet through the lens of Sanatana Dharma.

1) The Nature of Kali Yuga

According to Hindu cosmology, time unfolds in cycles of four Yugas:

• Satya Yuga (age of truth)

• Treta Yuga
• Dvapara Yuga
• Kali Yuga (the current age)
Each successive Yuga sees a decline in dharma, virtue, lifespan, and
spiritual strength.

Scriptural Description of Kali Yuga

The Vishnu Purana (1.3.24) says:

"tāmasānām tu yuge kalau"

Tamasic qualities prevail in the Kali Yuga.

And in the Srimad Bhagavatam (12.3.30–31):

“In Kali Yuga, people will be greedy, ill-behaved, and short-lived. Religion,
truth, and cleanliness will diminish.”

Bhagavata Purana 1.1.10:

“mandāḥ sumanda-matayo manda-bhāgyā hy upadrutāḥ”

Translation: In Kali Yuga, people are lazy, misguided, unlucky, and

constantly disturbed.

Because of these degradations, the path to God-realization must also be

simplified for the benefit of the people.
