1. TRANSFORMER STABILITY TEST PROCEDURE.

1.1 OBJECTIVE: The objective of this test is confirming that the differential relay / REF relay
does not operate at normal conditions even though load currents are high. It should operate
when a fault occurs it on in zone.
1.2. SOURCE: Suitable 3phase generator – 480 volt – 60 Hz
1.3. PRECAUTIONS:
 Good earthing of the Generator.
 Good earth of the Transformer Neutral Points and the shield of the cables.
 The correct size of connected cables.
 Determine working zones and places and preventing any person to be in these zones.
 Suitable MCB for 3-phase supply.
 CT terminal blocks must be checked and tightness well.
 Temporary cable short in Transformer secondary X1X2 & X2X3 terminals of LV winding
side (RYB).
2.0 CALCULATIONS:
2.1 TECHNICAL DATA:
 Rated Power: 16 MVA
 Rated Voltage: 33 KV/ 13.8 KV
 Rated Current Primary for 16 MVA: 267.70 A
 Rated Current Secondary (LV) for 16 MVA: 669.30 A
 Vector Group: Dyn1
 % Impedance - HV to LV: 10.7 % (16 MVA) – Nominal tap
 TRANSFORMER HV CTR: 400/1 A (Not Available)
 13.8KV SWGR LV CTR: 1000/1 A (Not Available)
 REF CTR IN LV PHASE CT: 1000/1 A (Not Available)

2.2 PROCEDURE FOR TRANSFORMER STABILITY TEST: HV TO LV

2.2.1 Apply 3ph 380V at primary side of the transformer and short all the 3 phase LV after Differential
CT's

2.2.1 Expected HV side short circuit primary Current:

= Rated Current x Applied Voltage x 100

% Impedance Rated Voltage

= 267.70 * 380 / 10.70* 34500 *100

= 27.56 A

2.2.2 Expected CT Secondary of HV side:

= Expected HV SC Current x CT Secondary Current

CT Secondary Current
= 27.56 * 1 / 400
= 68.90 mA

2.2.3 Expected LV side short circuit primary Current:

= Rated Current x Applied Voltage x 100

% Impedance Rated Voltage

= 669.30 * 380 / 10.70* 34500 *100

= 68.90 A

= 68.90 * 1 / 1000
= 68.90 mA
