ASSIGNMENT 6 (FORCED CONVECTION – INTERNAL FLOW)
1) Air at 3 X 10-4 kg/s and 270C enters a rectangular duct that is 1m long and 4mm by 16mm on a
side. A uniform heat flux of 600W/m2 is imposed on the duct surface. What is the temperature of
the air and of the duct surface at the outlet?
Use air properties at the appropriate temperature. Use the table given below for non-circular cross-
sections.
2)A device that recovers heat from high temperature combustion products involves passing the
combustion gas between parallel plates , each of which is maintained at 350K by water flow on the
opposite surface. The plate separation is 40mm and the gas flow is fully developed. The gas may be
assumed to have the properties of atmospheric air , and its mean temperature and velocity are
1000K and 60m/s respectively.
(a) What is the heat flux at the plate surface?
(b) If a third plate, 20mm thick, is suspended midway between the original plates , what is the
surface heat flux for the original plates? Assume the temperature and flow rate of the gas to be
unchanged and radiation effects to be negligible.
Use air properties at the appropriate temperature.
3)A thin-walled, uninsulated 0.3m diameter duct is used to route chilled air at 0.05kg/s through the
attic of a large commercial building. The attic air is at 37oC and natural convection provides a
convection coefficient of 2W/m2K at the outer surface of the duct. If the chilled air enters a 15m long
duct at 70C, what is its exit temperature and the rate of heat gain? Properties of the chilled air may
be evaluated at an assumed average temperature of 300K.
Use air properties at the appropriate temperature.
4) Water at 290K and 0.2 kg/s flows through a Teflon tube (K=0.35W/m.K) with inner and outer radii
equal to 10mm and 13mm respectively. A thin electrical tape wrapped around the outer surface of
the tube delivers a uniform surface heat flux of 2000W/m2 while a convection coefficient of 25
W/m2.K is maintained at the outer surface of tape by ambient air at 300K.What is the fraction of
power dissipated by tape which is transferred to the water? What is outer surface temperature of
Teflon tube?
5) Steam condensing on the outer surface of thin walled circular tube of diameter D=50mm and
Length L=6m maintains a uniform surface temperature of 100 oC.Water flows through the tube at
rate of 0.25kg/s and its inlet and outlet temperatures are Tm,i= 15 oC and Tm,o=57 oC What is the
average convective coefficient associated with the water flow?
6) For flow of liquid metal through a circular tube velocity and temperature profiles at a particular
axial location may be approximated as being uniform and parabolic respectively that is
Where C1 andC2 are constants. What is the value of
Nusselt Number at this location?
