TEACHER’S NOTES WHAT'S IT LIKE? Materials: One copy of the board and a dice per group and a counter per student ‘Arrange $s into groups of four and distribute the board (enlarged to A3 if possible) and a dice to each group and ‘a counter to each student. Quickly review the difference between what something is lke. which you use to describe things. and what do you fke/disike about something to talk about something's good and bad points. Tel Ss to take itn turns to move around the board and speak about the subject in the box they land on. After they have spoken about the topic, they should also ask another student ‘one question about the topic. eg. mobile phone, My mobile is ‘Nokia. I's siver ond hos a big screen, Hike « becouse it looks very modern. Pablo what's your mabile phone lke? What do you like about it? The other $s can ask additional questions. e.. Where did you buy &? If Ss don’t own a particular object. for ‘example a car, they can describe the car of someone they know instead If Ss land at the foot of a ladder, they go up it and if they land con the head of a snake they go down it. If you don't have any dice, Ss can use a coin and move one space for heads and two spaces for tails. The winner i the first student to reach the finish. You should monitor and help Ss if there are ‘communication problems as well as note any errors related to the uses of like. Tell them not to write the answers in order. When they have finished, demonstrate how to fold the sheet and have them do the same with their own. Now organise the class into pairs and have the students exchange sheets with their partner, Tell the students to look at their partner's sheet and try to guess the questions for each answer, When they guess correctly, they tick the square. Encourage students to do this without looking back at the questions, but if they have difficulty allow them to look back. Get feedback from the class by asking students about their partner e.g., Which countries would your partner lke to visit? Guess the like question. Pre-activity (5 minutes) Ask students what questions with ike they can remember. Elicit the ‘question forms What is he like? What does he like? What does he look like? and write them on the board. Add the question How is he? then ccheck that students understand the differences between the questions by eliciting some typical answers to each. Explain that students are going to play a board game to practise these questions. Procedure (5 minutes) Pre-teach/check the expressions students will need to play the game: ‘Throw/Roll the dice; Go back/forward one square; Miss a go; Have ‘another go; Its my/your turn; Imi/ You're next; That’ right/wrong; We are the winners! Put students into groups of four and explain that each group has two teams of two. Hand out copies of the board game, and dice and counters. Look at the board game with the class. Explain that most of the squares have a prompt for a question, many of them containing the word ike. ‘Some of the prompts are ‘open’ and can be interpreted in two ways, eg, What / your best friend / like? can be What is your bestfriend like? or What does your best friend like? Explain that students need to listen carefully to the questions asked in the game and word their answer accordingly. Explain the rules: students play the game in their teams of two and take tums to throw the dice and move around the board. If pair lands on a square with a prompt, the student who threw the dice forms the ‘question and the other student gives an answer. Ifthey both get it right, they move forward one square. If they get either the question or answer ‘wrong, their turn ends, and play moves on to the other team, Focus attention on the Bonus Words in the middle of the page. Explain that if students can use any of the bonus words/phrases correctly in their answers, they get to move forward two squares, instead of one. Students should cross out the words/phrases in the Bonus Words chart as they use them. ‘The first pair to reach ‘Finish’ are the winners. Monitor and check that students are playing the game correctly. Try to encourage students to check each other's answers, but be prepared to be the final judge if the groups disagree. Extension (5 minutes) Get students to say some of the descriptions they used in the game to the rest of the class, Other students can either guess who or what they have described, or can guess which question from the game board they were answering, For extra practice, get students to answer questions from the board ‘game again. Time taken: 25 minutes Photocopy and cut up one worksheet for each student in the class. Prepar Procedure Give a copy of the worksheet to each student and focus their attention on the questions. Tell them they have to work individually to write short answers to ten of those questions in, the shapes in the second part of the sheet. Remind them not to do it in order. ‘Next tell students to tear off the second part of the sheet and exchange it with a partner. Looking at each other's answers they have to guess the question, without looking back at the original questions. When they guess correctly they cross out the answer. This continues until students have crossed out all the answers. Get feedback from the whole class by having students read out some of their answers and eliciting the question from the whole class.
