surgical tools, and implants, ensuring they meet strict regulatory requirements
while being functional and safe.
5. Electronics & Electrical

The software is used for creating enclosures, circuit board designs, and
electronic devices, helping to visualize assembly layouts and design parts for
electrical components.
6. Architecture & Civil Engineering

While SolidWorks is primarily focused on mechanical design, it is also used for
designing structures, layouts, and installations in architecture and civil
engineering.

 Features of SolidWorks
1. 3D Modeling

Part Design: In SolidWorks, a "part" is a single 3D object, such as a screw,
bracket, or engine component. SolidWorks allows you to create parts by starting
with 2D sketches, then extruding, revolving, lofting, or sweeping them into 3D
objects.

Sketching Tools: You create 3D objects by first defining 2D profiles using
sketches. The software offers various sketching tools (lines, arcs, splines,
circles, etc.) that can be dimensioned and constrained to control the geometry
of your designs.

Feature-Based Modeling: SolidWorks uses a feature-based modeling
approach, meaning you build up your model through a series of operations
called "features" like extrudes, cuts, holes, fillets, and chamfers. This allows
flexibility and easy edits.

12

Surface Modeling: In addition to solid bodies, SolidWorks provides surface
modeling tools for complex, freeform designs, commonly used in products like
consumer goods, automotive, and aerospace industries.
2. Parametric Design

SolidWorks uses parametric design, which means that parts and assemblies
are defined by variables and parameters, such as dimensions and relationships
between components.

Changing the value of a parameter (e.g., the length of a part or the diameter of
a hole) automatically updates the entire model accordingly.

This allows for easy modifications and quick design iterations, reducing the time
needed for design changes.
3. Assemblies

In SolidWorks, assemblies are made by combining individual parts into a larger,
functional unit. These assemblies can represent machines, structures, or
systems.

Mates: SolidWorks uses "mates" to define the relationships and constraints
between parts in an assembly. Mates can constrain how parts move relative to
each other (e.g., fixed, coincident, concentric, distance, etc.).

Assembly Management: SolidWorks helps users manage large assemblies
by providing tools for simplifying views, controlling assembly configurations,
and creating exploded views to understand how parts fit together.

Interference Detection: You can check if parts in an assembly interfere with
one another, ensuring the design is manufacturable without collisions.
4. Simulation & Analysis

SolidWorks includes tools to simulate real-world performance before
manufacturing. This allows users to test their designs under various conditions,
ensuring product reliability.

Stress Analysis (FEA): The software includes Finite Element Analysis (FEA)
tools, which help analyse how parts will behave under forces, stresses, and
vibrations. It is critical for ensuring the strength and durability of components.

Motion Studies: SolidWorks allows users to simulate the movement of parts
within an assembly, showing how components will move in real-life operations.

Thermal and Fluid Flow Analysis: You can perform thermal simulations to
study heat transfer and fluid flow simulations to analyse airflow, cooling
systems, or liquid dynamics.
5. Sheet Metal Design

SolidWorks has specialized tools for designing sheet metal parts, commonly
used in industries like automotive and electronics.

You can create parts for manufacturing with operations like bending, punching,
folding, and more, with automatic adjustments for thickness, bend radii, and
other sheet metal properties.

13

The software also provides tools to create flat patterns of sheet metal parts,
which can be directly used for cutting and fabrication.
6. Rendering & Visualization

SolidWorks Visualize: This tool helps create photorealistic renderings of your
3D models, allowing you to produce high-quality images and animations for
presentations or marketing.

You can apply materials (metal, plastic, glass), adjust lighting, and add
environments to create realistic product visuals.

Real View Graphics: SolidWorks has Real View Graphics, which enhances
the display of 3D models by providing high-quality lighting, shadows, and
surface textures, offering a preview of what your model might look like in real
life.
7. Collaboration and Documentation

SolidWorks supports collaboration through tools like PDM (Product Data
Management), allowing teams to share and manage CAD data.

2D Drawings: From the 3D model, SolidWorks can automatically generate 2D
technical drawings with precise dimensions, tolerances, and annotations.
These drawings can be used in manufacturing for the production of parts and
assemblies.

Bill of Materials (BOM): Automatically generate BOMs from assemblies to list
all parts and components used in a design.

Design Tables: SolidWorks allows users to manage multiple configurations of
a part or assembly within a single file. Configurations are controlled by tables,
which can define part sizes, material choices, or different assembly layouts.
8. Customization & Automation

Add-ins & Macros: SolidWorks supports customization through add-ins and
macros. You can automate repetitive tasks, create custom user interfaces, or
extend the functionality of the software using VBA, C#, or other programming
languages.

Design Automation: SolidWorks has automation tools like Design Tables and
Equations, which enable the automatic generation of variants of a design based
on specific parameters (e.g., different sizes of a component).
