LESSON 1 - NOUNS

I. IDENTIFYING THE FUNCTIONS OF NOUNS IN SENTENCES. Identify the function of the underlined noun
in the following sentence.

Subject 1) Piolo Pascual is a versatile actor.

Direct Object 2) I admire our music teacher.

Direct Object 3) We need to thank God every time we open our eyes in the morning.

Indirect Object 4) I bought my daughter classy shoes.

Object of the Preposition 5) Give my best wishes to Bruce.

Appositive 6) Her talent, dancing, helps her achieve her dreams.

Subject Complement 7) Professors are experts in their respective field of specializations.

Direct Object 8) He put his arms around me.

Possession 9) Lara’s charm attracts everyone.

Subject Complement 10) Sarah G. is a professional and talented artist.

Object of the Preposition 11) Many Filipinos feel frustrated about the current situation of the country.

II. CONSTRUCTING SENTENCES USING THE DIFFERENT FUNCTIONS OF NOUNS.

Construct sentences using the different functions of nouns. Then, underline the noun used in the
sentence based from the function given.

1) Subject of the sentence


 Rain falls heavily during the monsoon season.
2) Direct object
 She painted a beautiful landscape last weekend.
3) Indirect object
 The coach handed the players their new uniforms.
4) Object of the preposition
 We found your keys under the couch.
5) Object complement
 They named their baby Alaeyra.
6) Subject complement
 Jason became a famous chef after winning the contest.
7) Appositive
 My sister, a skilled guitarist, performs at local cafés.
8) Vocative
 Let me ask you, citizens of this country, what help can you offer?
9) Modifier
 The Filipino citizens once again proved their resilience.
10)Possession
 Grandma’s recipe is still the best I’ve ever tasted.

II. CONSTRUCTING SENTENCES. Write down sentences using the following verb with the time markers. Decide what
tense or aspect of verb you are going to use. Explain why.

1. perform – tonight

Sentence: She will perform at the school play tonight.

Tense/Aspect: Simple Future

Explanation: "Tonight" indicates a future time, so the future tense is appropriate.

2. cook – at the moment

Sentence: Mom is cooking dinner at the moment.

Tense/Aspect: Present Continuous

Explanation: "At the moment" suggests an action happening now, requiring present continuous.

3. watch (1st action) & arrive (2nd action) – last night

Sentence: I was watching a movie when my brother arrived last night.

4. complete – just

5. clean – regularly

Sentence: He cleans his room regularly.

Tense/Aspect: Simple Present

Explanation: "Regularly" implies a habitual action, which uses simple present.

6. work – next year

Sentence: I will work in a hospital next year.

Tense/Aspect: Simple Future

Explanation: "Next year" implies a future action, requiring future tense.

7. attend – once a week

Sentence: She attends yoga class once a week.

Tense/Aspect: Simple Present

Explanation: Repeated action in the present; simple present is suitable.

8. leave – tomorrow

Sentence: We will leave for the trip tomorrow.

Tense/Aspect: Simple Future

9. check – last week
