ANIMAL HEATHY VETERINARY CLINIC PROPOSAL PROJECT

1. Executive summary
Ethiopia had enormous livestock resource with a total contribution of 15% of Gross
Domestic product and 33% of the agricultural output. Current estimates show that there
are 41.5 Million head of cattle, 28.2 million sheep and goats 5.8 Million equine species,
Million camel and over 42 Million poultry. The population of dog and cats are not
known. However, each household in the rural area own one or two dogs and owns a cat.
There are also an estimated 4.6 million honey bee colonies contributing to the livestock
of the rural population. The contribution of fishing from at least 12 inland lakes and dams
and many other river is also large. Recent advances in the contraction of small ponds and
hydroelectric dams are giving another opportunity for fish farming.
Livestock are the main stay of the live of the majority of the human population by giving
draft power supply for a crop production and transport, as a source of meat, milk and egg
and source of cash income. Despite their all round advantages of livestock at farmer and
National level productivity has remain low. The main constraints are lack of sufficient
and standard of nutrients, poor husbandry practice ,lack of marketing facilities and
opportunities ,inadequate animal health services such as treatment practices ,disease
control activities ,reporting systems lack of standard treatments guidelines and
uncoordinated development programs between various levels of government institutions
and non-governmental organizations.
Livestock also offer the initial economic input for a farmer to adopt practice that
promotes environmentally sustainable farming. Generally speaking livestock through
multiple functions are the cornerstone of most rural population. Therefore animal
husbandry would then be perceived as operating economically as integral component
agricultural activities the economic, social and environmental function are seen ever
increasing. But animal production
Depends on the natural condition, the economic setting , the infrastructure ,resource and
opportunities available to farmer household.

1.1. The district of project area

The project was located in Oromia region, East Wallaga Zone, Guto Gida District,
Horo Aleltu Kebele. Guto Gida was located at a distance 316km from Addis Ababa.

1
The major agro-climate division are mid highland and low land with altitude range of
1200-1900 meters Above sea level.
The population is depend upon crop production and livestock production which is
mixed farming with traditional husbandry system and most of the farmers economy
is based on livestock production. Therefore in this district livestock play a crucial
role in agricultural production.
1.2. Animal population of the district .

husbandry is the main economic activity of the rural people.

1.4. Business Background

Animal diseases are of major concern at both the regional and Federal government levels.
Their main negative effect of animal disease are loss of production and productivity

2
hindrance to access the international animal and animal product markets reduction in
quality of hides and skins , tick borne diseases constraint to improving the genetic
potential through cross breeding with exotic breeds and their zoonotic potential. In
Ethiopia the district loss from mortality of food animals due to infectious diseases is
estimated to be 14-16% of cattle, 8-10% of sheep and 11-13% 0f goats. Indirect losses
are not available.

2. Veterinary/ animal health Service of Guto Gida district

Animal health service has traditionally been considered as duty of the government. It was
not until a very recent that most services become open for private practitioners are
sharing the load from state animal health services
In Guto Gida veterinary care are growing. There is only two type “C” government Clinic,
4 type “D” Clinic (healthy post) and five private drug shops and no private clinics. When
we compare to the district high livestock population and high incidence of animal disease
have an interest. There is a big demand for additional veterinary service interims of man
power ,infrastructural development and veterinary clinic and drug supply.
Additional private veterinary clinic contribute to alleviate the currently existing shortage
of veterinary service. Therefore from Guto Gida association Horo Aleltu kebele had
12,124 head of cattle, 2500 head of sheep 2,711 head of horse 1866 head of donkey 93
head of mule and 2,800 poultry. Despite these high potential of livestock in the peasant
association there is no one veterinary clinic in area.
Position is exclusive choice for Horo Aleltu kebele association and neighboring peasant
association livestock owner. These customers are facing many animal problems so they
likely to visit a veterinarian every times and make a veterinary decision based on quality
rather than price. A range of professional efforts is planned to attract these customers.
I studied DVM (Doctor of Veterinary Medicine Degree in Wallaga University, School
of Veterinary Medicine.
This Clinic will be profitable by the end of its first year. By the end of its third year it will
likely grow to include another veterinarian and develop its type. I am currently seeking
50,000 in startup funding to supplement our own 100,000 investment in the business.
These additional funds will primarily be used to by veterinary equipments. In our case I
am opening veterinary Clinic and working with successful veterinary practice in area we

3
are decided to expand our clinic level to type “B” and open other branch to other area to
serve the livestock owner.

3. Competitors

3.1. Small competitors

 Neighborhood veterinary drug shop
 Strengths located in area high potential of livestock
 Weaknesses:- high price

3.2 Competitive Opportunities and challenge

A. Opportunities
 Few competitors currently offering treatment in the area. few competitor is making
effort to serve Horo Aleltu kebele and the neighbor peasant association farmer.
B. Challenges
 With only one veterinarian on staff, we would have difficult offering 24 hours on call
service. To address this, we have made arrangements for a competitor to care for my
patients when our Clinic is closed and decide to one animal health technician after six
month.
 Since we are beginner business professional from theDVM (Doctor of
Veterinary Medicine Degreein the School of Veterinary Medicine in Wallaga
University ,we have no enough capital fill all necessary material in the clinic and fill
client need such as prevention treatment or vaccination.

4. Prevalence of Livestock Diseases in the district

Due to different climatic condition of the district there are different types of animal disease in
the district.
The most noticeable diseases of the district are:-
 Fasciollosis
 Pasteurellesis
 Trypanosomiasis
 Black leg
 Sheep pox and goat pox
 Mastitis
 Coccidiosis
 Helminthiasis

5
Which contributed to the low productivity of the livestock’s, diseases outbreak and prevalence is
high despite low veterinary service in many area of the district.
The most pressing animal husbandry issue requires attention and resolution in hostile
environment. The Environment in which animal’s lives is favorable to disease organisms and
existing management practice could not reduce the risk and severity of diseases.
Rather animal continue being carriers are susceptible to suffering from and social important in
the area will be include.

avail the entire necessary clinic which is about 18,699 birr. So the total capitals of
