Lesson Plan in Science 9 Species Extinction (Oct 3, 2023)

The lesson plan for Science 9 at Gulo Integrated School focuses on species extinction, its causes, and the importance of adaptation to environmental changes. Students will learn to define species extinction, identify its causes, and categorize various species based on their conservation status. The plan includes multimedia presentations, quizzes, and discussions to enhance understanding of the topic.

Lesson Plan in Science 9
Content Standards:
The learners demonstrate understanding of how changes in the
environment may affect species extinction

Performance Standards:
The learners should be able to make a multimedia presentation of a
timeline of extinction of representative microorganism, plants, and animals.

What are the different causes of species extinction?
Base on our activity, what is our lesson for today?
 Abstraction
Think about your favorite animal or pet, now imagine if your favorite
animal or pet is dying and there is no more animal of that kind can be found
on earth, what would you feel? That situation is a Species extinction.
Species extinction is the complete extermination or dying of a species.
Meaning there is no spare or another kind of that species living, it is the loss
of a species impacts food chain, food webs and pollination services.

These are some of the following threats or causes for the species extinction.
1. Habitat destruction and degradation: It is the destructions of their home by
means of typhoon, human exploitation to build buildings, deforestation, forest
fires and other factors that will contribute to the loss of the primary habitat of that
specific species.
2. Over-exploitation: It is the massive extraction, hunting, fishing of the kind of
species, meaning they have no control on capturing that specific species.
3. Pollution: Water, air, soil and other kind of pollution affects the species.
4. Disease: These are illnesses that can kill both plants and animals.
5. Invasions of alien species: meaning other species of animals due to the
changing of the environment they will invade other species habitat that will result
to the loss of other species.
6. Global climate change (Changes in migratory species, coral bleaching): It
is the major cause for the threat for species extinction, the plants and animals
cannot adapt to the changing environment (sudden hotness and cold
temperature in the environment) will cause death to the species because they
are not familiar with the changes it will starve them and change their everyday
routine.

Terms we use for indicating species.

1. Critically endangered species is a species that still exists in the wild but is
listed as being at the highest risk for extinction. Some of the species considered
as critically endangered are as follows: Kemp’s ridley sea turtle, brown spider
monkey, Chinese alligator, black rhino, northern hairy-nosed wombat, Philippine
eagle, red wolf, Malayan tiger, northern white rhinoceros, Pitcher plant, Balete,

Lady Slipper orchid)
2. Endangered species, any species that is at risk of extinction because of a
sudden rapid decrease in its population or a loss of its critical habitat. (Blue
Whale, Chimpanzee, Green Turtle, Indian Elephant, Whale Shark, Bantigue,
Hoya, Mangkono)
3. Vulnerable species is a species which has been categorized by the
International Union for Conservation of Nature as likely to become endangered
unless the circumstances that are threatening its survival and reproduction
improve.
A critically endangered species is a species that is extremely likely to become
extinct in the immediate future. (Giant Panda,Dugong, Hippopotamus, Polar bear,
Begonia,)
4. A near-threatened species is a species which has been categorized as
"Near Threatened" (NT) by the International Union for Conservation of Nature as
that may be considered threatened with extinction in the near future, although it
does not currently qualify for the threatened status. ( Jaguar, Yellowfin Tuna,
White Rhino,Duguan, Agbab)
Extinct Animals
1. Dodo: 2. Quagga:

Extinct Plants
1. Archaeamphora: 2. Palaeoaldrovanda Splendens:

 Application
1. What is Species Extinction?
2. What are the causes for the species extinction?
3. Why changes in the environment can cause species extinction?

V. Evaluation
