INSTALLATION DO’S AND DON’TS

TARGET PHARMA METAL DETECTOR
(DIGITECH-75™)
___________________________________________________________________________________
3. INSTALLATION DO’S AND DON’TS
ELECTRICAL
Do Not cut the sensor head cables
These cables are equipped with special double shields and connectors and must not be
cut. The cable supplied with our Metal Detector has been used to tune the sensor head
and must be the only cable used to connect the sensor head to the electronics. It is
therefore recommended that consideration to be given where the connection boxes are
located and that all cables be installed in conduit.

Do not weld in reasonable proximity to the Metal Detector

Welding in the vicinity of the Metal Detector may cause false metal alarms due to the
spectrum of frequencies that welding induces into the environment/ground. Turn Detector
power off before welding near the Detector.

When welding, do not use the control panel mounting surface as a ground
Install an Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) to supply clean power and a filtered
ground.
Voltage fluctuations and changing ground potentials can cause false tripping therefore a
Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) with a filtered ground is highly recommended.
Do not install the Metal Detector near Motor Control Centre (MCC's) or control
panels
Stray electromagnetic fields can trigger false trips.

Run the connector cables to the Metal Detector separately

Connector cables are part of the Metal Detector and have to be protected against noise. It
is highly recommended to run them in a dedicated conduit. The conduit should be metal
but, must be grounded. If the conduit is to be connected at the transmit/receive boxes on
the coil and/or the control panel, all fittings must be plastic.

Do not install the detection coil inside an electromagnetic field (strong power supply
fluctuations)
Interferences can trigger faults. For example; where units are installed in close proximity to
chipper motors, when under high amperage draw, can cause nuisance or false tripping and
this may require the fabrication of a shield.

Do not disconnect the Metal Detector from the power supply main
A constant, uninterrupted power supply enables more sensitive adjustments. Powering the
unit on and off causes it to recalibrate during which time metal will not be detected.
TARGET PHARMA METAL DETECTOR
(DIGITECH-75™)
___________________________________________________________________________________
MECHANICAL
Vibration-less installation of the Detector coil
Higher sensitivities can be attained and maintained if the operating conditions are optimal.
Ensure the coil is mounted to a structure that is stationery at all times.

Eliminate loose metal to metal connections near or within the detection field
Intermittent metal to metal contacts from such things as roller axis, loose bolted
connections, or broken welds can cause the Metal Detector to false trip especially on the
higher sensitivity settings.

Vibration less installation of the Control Panel

Mount the control panel on a vibration free surface. Vibration can cause premature
electronic component failure.

Avoid cable whiplash

On Vibratory Conveyor installations, use the supplied cable clamps and tie wraps to secure
the cables to the Metal Detector housing. Doing so will avoid whiplash at the
transmit/receive box strain relief connections. In addition to this we recommend that you
loop the cables as they exit the conduit. These loops will then flex as the conveyor cycles. It
is also advisable to follow this procedure on belt conveyor installations.

Do not touch the sensor/coil surface of the Detector

Mechanical contacts may cause detection errors. Keep the sensing surface free of debris.

IMPORTANT TO KNOW
TARGET PHARMA METAL DETECTOR
(DIGITECH-75™)
___________________________________________________________________________________
4. IMPORTANT TO KNOW
IMPORTANT THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT
METAL DETECTOR
Fiction outweighs fact when it comes to information available about Target Pharma Metal
Detectors. There is an unlimited supply of opinions and assumptions made about Metal
Detectors and how they should operate and perform. You will never get the same opinion
from two people on how a Metal Detector functions let alone how it is expected to
perform. The following information is simply stated and designed to educate.

FACT:
1. A Target Pharma Metal Detector cannot be selectively programmed to ignore small metal such
as dross from drag chains staples or fine particulate and only trip on larger metal that can
damage downstream processing equipment.

2. There is no 'plug and play'. All systems will require some adjustment following installation.

3. The closer the metal is to the sensing face, the smaller the size that will make the unit trip. For
example; A grouping of small ferrous metal particles the size of pin heads can register the
same signature as a 3/8" diameter x 3" long bolt! Installing a System prior to the Metal
Detector to capture the smaller ferrous tramp metal is a Good idea.

4. A Metal Detector must be installed in an environment that is as stable as possible avoiding

such things as proximity to high voltage lines and or Motor Control Centre (MCC's) panels or
large electric motors.

5. Power supply and ground are critical. Older, analogue systems require a constant voltage
power supply while the newer microprocessor systems require a filtered Uninterruptible
Power Supply (UPS) to supply clean power.

6. Depending on the angle metal is presented to the sensing face will in part dictate the
sensitivity or the ability of the unit to 'see' the metal. For example, a piece of ¼" thick, mild
steel that is 6" long x 3" wide produces a very large signature however, if this piece is on end
so that only the narrowest point is presented to the sensing face, there is a likelihood it will not
be detected. Of course, this is dependent on two very important factors; Distance from the
sensing face and the sensitivity setting of the Metal Detector.

7. False/Nuisance tripping can be controlled if not virtually eliminated especially on the newer
systems. Simply stated, a Metal Detector is an antenna and an antenna will sense both
mechanical and electrical noise.

8. Follow the installation, operational and maintenance directions/instructions of the

manufacturer to the letter.

8.3 METHOD OF OPERATION

TARGET PHARMA METAL DETECTOR (DIGITECH-75™) operates on the principle of
inductance measurement, which is briefly described below.

The sensor has two coils:

 The transmitter coil and
 The receiver coil.

The pair of coils must first be balanced before measurement commences. This step takes
place automatically after Switching ON and is termed "adjustment".

In the transmitter coil a generator is used to create a flow of electric current. This creates
an electromagnetic alternating field (magnetic field) in the sensor.

If a particle of metal now passes through the Metal Detector — and hence through the
magnetic field — the magnetic field of the transmitter coil is changed. As a result of the
change in the magnetic field an electric current is created in the receiver coil. This process
is termed "electromagnetic induction".

The amount of current generated (induced) is directly proportional to the magnetic and
electrical properties of the particle of metal:

 Large metal particles induce a higher current than small metal particles
 Magnetic metals (e.g. steel) induce a higher current than non-magnetic metals (e.g.
aluminum)

The current thus induced is measured and then processed and analyzed by the electronic
circuitry.
Since this method of measurement responds to
 Electrical conductivity and
 Magnetism

All types of metal are detected. However, magnetic metals are detected more reliably
than nonmagnetic ones. The method of measurement also makes it possible to detect
metal particles inside the product or in non-metal packaging.
The products examined are not harmed or changed by the measurement in any way.
TARGET PHARMA METAL DETECTOR
(DIGITECH-75™)
___________________________________________________________________________________

8.4 OPERATING LIMITS

Not only metals but also many other materials and raw materials are more or less
electrically conductive. The reasons for this can, for example, be

 Salts,
 Sugar,
 Minerals,
 Moisture or
 Carbons

In the materials. This means that a current is constantly being induced in the receiver coil
although there are no metal particles in the material being examined. This effect is
termed "product effect" or "material effect".

The product effect has a characteristic value for each material. Since the value is constant
within a certain bandwidth, it can be taken into account by the Metal Detector and
compensated for.

The level of sensitivity which can be achieved in practice is often dependent on:

o How well any product effect can be compensated for by the Metal Detector.

o How carefully the Metal Detector has been installed (e.g. strong vibrations, moving
metal directly next to the sensor, electromagnetic interferences etc.).

9. TRANSPORT
9.1 SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS FOR TRANSPORT AND INSTALLATION DANGER!
To prevent damage to the machine and hazardous injuries when transporting and
installing the machine it is absolutely essential that the following instructions are
observed:

 Transport and installation work may only be performed by qualified personnel

observing the safety instructions.

 The machine may only be lifted using the frame provided.

 To transport the machine only the hoisting and sling gear specified here may be
used.

 When selecting suitable hoisting equipment always take the following weights into
account:

 Depending on size and type, the Metal Detector can weigh up to 100 kg.

 The transport route must always be guarded by a third person.

 The transport routes must be cordoned off and guarded so that no unauthorized
persons may enter the danger zone.

 Any projecting sharp edges may cause injuries due to cuts.

 Suspended loads may drop, in which case there is a risk of fatal injury – never remain
under suspended loads.

 Live ends of electric cables and components may cause injury due to electric shock.

 Parts lying unsecured on top of one another may slip and drop.

 During welding there is a risk of fire.

 Cables which have not been laid properly (e.g. radius of curvature too small) may
cause smoldering fires and cable fires

 Also read the section General Safety Instructions.

9.2 TRANSPORTING
CHOOSING SUITABLE HOISTING EQUIPMENT
When choosing hoisting equipment always use padded cables or straps. Using of Chains
could lead to damaging of the Metal Detector.

DANGER
Never lift the entire set of equipment directly at the sensor head. The heavy weight of the
entire set of equipment may cause damage to the sensor head.

INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS
TARGET PHARMA METAL DETECTOR
(DIGITECH-75™)
___________________________________________________________________________________
10. INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS
The following points require special attention during installation:

 Metal-free zone
 Vibration
 Feed of belt through sensor
 Mounting on conveyor / frame
 Keep conveyor belt clean
 Welding of transversal struts and contact points
 Installation of sensor head

10.1. METAL-FREE ZONE

A Metal Free Zone (“MFZ”) of 500 mm is required
in front of and behind the sensor heads.
The electro-magnetic field is created inside the
Detector‘s enclosure; however, some field
emanates out of the aperture on both sides and
forms the Metal Free Zone (“MFZ”). Generally,
the practical size of the leakage is 1½ times the
(smaller) aperture dimension, and no metal should
be allowed in this area. Large moving metal should
be kept 2 times away. Special Detectors are
available for applications which demand a
substantially reduced Metal Free Zone (“MFZ”).
Metal or metal rollers close to the aperture act as
aerials and pass small electrical currents into the
conveyor framework, this result in some or all of
the following effects.
TARGET PHARMA METAL DETECTOR
(DIGITECH-75™)
___________________________________________________________________________________

10.2. VIBRATION
 Install the Metal Detector so that it is exposed to as little vibration as possible in
operation.
 Light vibrations do not affect the Detector.
 The metal alarm can be triggered by a hard shock.

The Detector head becomes more sensitive to vibration. If the Detector head is
accidentally bumped it will cause relative movement between the Detector and the

The whole framework may become more sensitive to vibration. If the Detector is able to
twist or flex or if there are some loose or badly welded joints the electrical currents will be

MAINTENANCE
TARGET PHARMA METAL DETECTOR
(DIGITECH-75™)
___________________________________________________________________________________

13. MAINTENANCE
Three of the chief enemies of an industrial Metal Detector are electrical noise, impact, and
water. While the damage caused by impact and water is usually visible if time is taken for a
close inspection, electrical noise in the environment can affect the operation of the
Detector at least as seriously as the more visible damage. You should guard against all of
these.

13.1 METAL DETECTOR MAINTANENCE

13.1.1 ELECTRICAL NOISE

Electrical noise often causes degradation in Detector operation or reliability, to the point
that the Detector is taken off-line because of apparently erratic operation, and the
protection it had originally offered is lost. Detectors are sensitive to both radiated and line
noise. Radiated electrical noise in today‘s industrial environment most commonly comes
from variable frequency motor controls. Line noise may arise from any significant changes
in the loading of the electrical mains feeding the Detector. If the reliability or stability of
your Detector degrades over time, and if there have been electrical equipment changes in
the neighborhood of the Detector, investigate the possibility of noise as the cause. The
simplest method is to remove all possible sources of noise and observe the operation of
the Detector. If operation is restored to normal, then one of the removed sources was the
cause of the improper operation. (If operation is not restored to normal, then electrical
noise was not the problem). Further identification of the culpable noise source may be
achieved by restoring, in turn, each of the sources that was removed. When the Metal
Detector performance again degrades, the most recently restored noise source is the likely
cause. Keep in mind that
(a) There may be more than one cause,
(b) It is not easy to identify all potential noise sources.
TARGET PHARMA METAL DETECTOR
(DIGITECH-75™)
___________________________________________________________________________________

13.1.2 IMPACT AND WEAR

The incentive to Switch OFF a damaged Metal Detector, with the production line still
running, or just to let the Detector operate in a damaged condition, is often compelling,
due to production schedules, service availability, etc. In many cases, damage to a Metal
Detector is not noticed until a significant, and unknown quantity of product has passed,
uninspected. Obviously, in such situations, the protection offered by the Detector is
compromised if not totally lost. Even if the Detector does not sustain significant damage,
impacts particularly if repeated, indicate poor control over product position as it is
presented to the Detector, and, therefore, unreliable detection of metal. Prevention of
product impact, or expressed another way, proper control of product position within the
Detector, are vital to a reliable quality control. Bulk product conveyed through an aperture
or bridge style Detector should be guided by stationary (but adjustable) side guides to
keep it centered on the conveyor. The bed depth should be controlled by a knock-down
device upstream of the Detector. The knock-down should precede the side guides. Both
devices should center the product bed to provide clearance between the product and the
Metal Detector sensor surfaces at least equal to the average size of a single product
―chunk‖. If this clearance cannot be provided, the Detector aperture or bridge surfaces
should be protected by rugged non-metallic side-walls and/or ceiling. The conveyor belt
itself should be carefully centered in the Detector aperture, and should be checked and
adjusted periodically.

13.1.3 WATER
Water is one of the primary enemies of a Metal Detector. Water that enters the Metal
Detector housing can cause immediate or long term corrosion and malfunction of the
electronics. This may result in obvious failure, or, worse, long term loss of sensitivity
without other malfunctions. All Detectors are carefully designed to resist water penetration.
However, the necessity of shielding the Detector circuitry from external electromagnetic
noise, and the requirement that the Detector itself not emit significant stray
electromagnetic radiation, cause challenging and conflicting seal design problems.
Electromagnetic sealing favors metallic seals; moisture sealing favors compliant seals.
 Never make the path of the interconnecting cable of the Metal Detector and control
unit run parallel to any power carrying cable.
 Search coil should be protected from the sagging of the conveyor belt.
 Clean the search coil and control box at least once in a week time.
 Ensure that excessive vibrations do not transmit to the search coil.
 All the doors provided in the Metal Detector should be kept closed.
 Check the Metal Detector by passing the test piece in regular interval.
 An electronic failure does not mean that the user has to run unprotected whilst
trying to fix the Detector or waiting for a technician. The exchangeable module gets
the unit back into operation fast.

TARGET PHARMA METAL DETECTOR
(DIGITECH-75™)
___________________________________________________________________________________
15. GENERAL FUNCTION
TARGET INNOVATIONS™ group for this manual: quality checking personnel, Hazard
Analysis Critical Control Points (HACCP) agent

START OF WORK:

 Turn on the Metal Detector and wait about 1 min (alignment time)

METAL DETECTION:
 Pass numerous metal free samples through the Metal Detector.
 No metal alarm is to occur.
 Pass a sample with a metal sphere through the Metal Detector.
 A metal alarm is to occur!

The test intervals must be specified in a way that when an irregularity occurs all products
can be checked again that have run through the Metal Detector since the last test.
Furthermore, a test should be made every time a new shift begins and a new product runs
through the Metal Detector.

PRODUCTION:
It must be secured that the Metal Detector checks all products systematically and steadily.

METAL FERROUS PRODUCT:

It must be secured that all metal ferrous products are not accidentally reused or delivered
to a customer. These products are to be removed from the production and labeled clearly,
e. g. with a red label ―Locked/metal‖.

MANUAL
TARGET PHARMA METAL DETECTOR
(DIGITECH-75™)
___________________________________________________________________________________
16. GENERAL METAL DETECTOR MANUAL
METHOD OF OPERATION:
The Metal Detector establishes an electromagnetic field in the search coil. This field
changes when a metal pass through. Then a metal alarm is set off. A Metal Detector reacts
on magnetism and electric conductivity.

OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS:
 In order to minimize interferences Do not install any mobile metal parts near the
search coil.
 The search coil must be free from vibrations. Do not put any objects on the search
coil.
 The settings in the specific operating instructions of our products must be made.
 Always take metal alarms seriously. You have to look for the source of the metal
impurity.
 Most material is conductive. Therefore, the Metal Detector has to learn the product
effect and blank it out.

ADDITIONAL HINTS:
The regular Metal Detector check may be omitted from the specific operating instructions.

FIRST ASK QUESTIONS (FAQ’S)

TARGET PHARMA METAL DETECTOR
(DIGITECH-75™)
___________________________________________________________________________________

17. FIRST ASK QUESTIONS (FAQ’S)

 WHAT IS A METAL DETECTOR AND HOW DOES IT WORK?
 A Metal Detector is an electronic device for detecting the presence of unwanted metal
contamination. Basically, a Metal Detector is made up of a transmitter and a receiver
antenna. As metal passes through the electrical field generated by the transmitter the
signal picked up by the receiver will change. The electronics of the Metal Detector
"look" at the signal change and "decide" if the change is caused by metal or some other
reason.

 WHY DO I NEED A METAL DETECTOR?

 There are only two reasons for using a Metal Detector:
 To protect your expensive and critical processing equipment, and to protect the
integrity of your final product. If a piece of tramp metal finds its way into your
grinder, chopper, mill, cutter, etc., not only will you lose production time and money
to repair the machine but now the metal is smaller and harder to find. Maintaining
your product integrity can be far more important. A small piece of metal in your final
product can be devastating to your company image and reputation.

 WHERE SHOULD I PUT THE METAL DETECTOR?

 If the Detector is intended to protect machinery then the Detector should be located as
close to the in feed section of the machine as practical, while still allowing ample space
to stop the machine before metal can enter. If the Metal Detector is used to inspect
your final product then the Detector should be located as close as possible to the end
of the production line - ideally, after the product has been packed since the chance of
contamination after packaging is remote. This may not be practical if the package itself
contains metal or if the final package is too large to allow good sensitivity.

 HOW DO I CHOOSE A METAL DETECTOR?

 Today's Metal Detectors are all sensitive, reliable, rugged, and accurate. The primary
objective is to choose a Metal Detector that is designed for your application. Make sure
that the aperture is sized correctly for the various products to be tested and that the
Detector is in the right location. Select a Metal Detector manufacturer you can depend
on for support and expertise.

 WHAT IS PRODUCT EFFECT?

 Virtually all products will create some type of signal in the Metal Detector as they pass
through the electrical field. Factors that can contribute to this "product effect" signal
are: moisture content, fat content, acidity, temperature, salinity, orientation, and mass.
In general, smaller product effect signals allow for better Metal Detector sensitivity. The
ability of a Detector to compensate for product effect can also increase sensitivity to
metal.
TARGET PHARMA METAL DETECTOR
(DIGITECH-75™)
___________________________________________________________________________________

 WHAT IS SENSITIVITY?
 Metal Detector sensitivity is defined as the minimum diameter sphere that can be
consistently detected at the center of the Metal Detector opening. Sensitivity can be
stated as "maximum" or "in-product". Maximum sensitivity is the best sensitivity that a
Metal Detector can achieve under ideal conditions. In-product sensitivity is much more
meaningful as it is the sensitivity a Metal Detector can achieve when actually inspecting
product.

 WHAT FACTORS AFFECT SENSITIVITY?

 Metal Detector sensitivity can be affected by many factors: product effect, size and
shape of metal contaminants, type and orientation of metal contaminants, Metal
Detector opening size, and the environment of operation.

 WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF METALS?

 Ferrous metals are magnetic type metals such as steel and iron and are the easiest for
Metal Detectors to find. Non-ferrous metals are non-magnetic metals such as copper,
aluminum, brass, bronze, and are almost as easy to detect as ferrous metals. Non-
magnetic stainless steel such as types 302, 304, and 316 are by far the most difficult of
metals to detect. In general, a piece of nonmagnetic stainless steel must be 1½ to 2
times larger than a ferrous piece of metal to be detected by a Metal Detector.

 WHAT SHOULD I DO IF THE METAL DETECTOR FINDS METAL?

 Many Metal Detector systems are equipped with an automatic rejection device that will
remove the suspected product from the production line. These should be collected and
examined to find the metal contaminant and trace the metal to its source. Small metal
pieces can be an early warning sign of a major breakdown. If an automatic reject device
is not practical then the product should be manually removed from the line and the
same procedure should be followed.

 HOW DO METAL DETECTORS HELP WITH HAZARD ANALYSIS CRITICAL CONTROL

POINTS (HACCP) REGULATIONS?
 The main purpose of the Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points (HACCP) initiative is
to develop a procedure that identifies possible locations in your production line where
product contamination can occur and to create a method of inspecting those locations
on a regular basis to prevent contamination. Documentation of these inspections is a
major feature of any Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points (HACCP) plan. Most
modern Metal Detectors have a record keeping ability to provide a history of
contamination incidents.
