Class 9 – Science Sample Paper 1 – Answer Key

Section A – MCQs (6 × 1 = 6 Marks)

Q: Which of the following correctly describes the motion of a train moving with constant
speed on a circular track?

A: c. Accelerated motion

Q: Which statement best explains why dry air is a mixture?

A: d. Its components retain individual properties

Q: Which of the following is NOT a function of the plasma membrane?

A: b. Provides rigidity to the cell

Q: Assertion (A): An object moving in a straight line with constant speed has zero
acceleration.
Reason (R): Acceleration occurs only when the speed of the object increases.

A: b. Both A and R are true; R is not the correct explanation

Q: What is the SI unit of retardation?

A: b. m/s²

Q: A solution boils at 100°C and freezes at 0°C. What does this indicate?

A: c. It's water

Section B – Very Short Answer (2 × 4 = 8 Marks)

Q: A mixture contains iron filings and sulphur. Suggest a method to separate them and
justify your answer.
A: Use a magnet – Iron filings will be attracted, leaving sulphur behind.

Q: A person applies force on a wall but the wall does not move. Is any work done?
Explain with reason.

A: No work is done because there is no displacement even though force is applied.

Q: A cell is placed in a highly concentrated sugar solution. Predict what will happen to
the cell and name the process involved.

A: The cell will shrink due to water loss by osmosis (plasmolysis).

Q: A car moves with a uniform velocity of 30 m/s for 2 minutes. Calculate the distance
covered.

A: Distance = Speed × Time = 30 m/s × 120 s = 3600 m

Section C – Short Answer (3 × 3 = 9 Marks)

Q: State Newton’s second law of motion and derive its mathematical expression using an
example.

A: Newton’s Second Law: Force is the rate of change of momentum.

Formula: F = ma
Example: Heavier object needs more force to accelerate.

Q: Differentiate between plant and animal cells under the microscope. Mention any three
distinguishing features.

A: Plant Cell: Cell wall, chloroplasts, large vacuole

Animal Cell: No cell wall, no chloroplasts, small vacuoles

Q: A student heats camphor in a china dish and observes the substance disappearing
without forming a liquid.
(i) What is this phenomenon called?
(ii) Is this process physical or chemical?
(iii) Justify your answer.

A: i. Sublimation
ii. Physical
iii. No new substance is formed, only state changes.

Section D – Long Answer (2 × 4 = 8 Marks)

Q: Draw the velocity–time graph of a body moving with uniform acceleration.

Use the graph to derive the equation: s = ut + ½ at²

A: Graph shows a straight line. Area under graph = Displacement.

Using trapezium rule: s = ut + ½ at²

Q: A student dissolves a spoon of sugar in water and labels it as a compound.

(i) Is this statement correct? Justify.
(ii) List two differences between a mixture and a compound.

A: i. Incorrect – It is a mixture.
ii. Mixture: variable composition, can be separated.
Compound: fixed composition, cannot be separated by physical means.

Section E – Case Study (2 × 4 = 8 Marks)

Q: CASE: Two raisins are placed in pure water and sugar solution respectively. One
swells and one shrinks.

A: a. Osmosis
b. Water moved out due to higher solute outside
c. Semi-permeable membrane
d. In salt water, both shrink

Q: CASE: A cyclist increases velocity from 4 m/s to 20 m/s in 4 seconds.

A: a. Acceleration = (20 - 4)/4 = 4 m/s²

b. s = ut + ½ at² = 4×4 + ½×4×16 = 48 m
c. Equation: s = ut + ½ at²
d. Motion is non-uniform accelerated
