Conditional Clause (IF) Type 0

If + simple present, simple present (main clause)

We use “if clause type 0” to talk about facts.

In this type of conditional sentences “if” can be replaced with “when”.


e.g. When you freeze water, it turns into ice.
I get tired when I work too much.
Murphy rules If I get my car washed, it rains. / If I fall in love with someone, that person already
has a boy/girlfriend.
Conditional Clause (IF) Type 1

If + simple present/present continuous,


will/can (main clause)

We use “if clause type 1” to talk about the result of a real, possible future action.

If it rains tomorrow, we will cancel the barbecue party. If it doesn’t rain, we won’t.

Sheila will do her master’s degree in the UK if she saves/can save enough money and finds/can
find a scholarship. (no comma)
