Body Language
Body language plays a crucial role in communication. It is a form of non-verbal communication,
consisting of facial expressions, body posture, gestures, eye movement, and tone of voice. In fact,
research shows that a significant portion of communication happens without words. People can convey
emotions like happiness, anger, or fear through their posture, facial expressions, and hand movements. In
some cultures, these non-verbal cues can be just as important as verbal ones. For example, in many
4
Middle Eastern countries, a simple handshake can convey trust and respect, while in other cultures, body
language may be more subtle.
One key component of body language is eye contact. Eye contact can convey a range of emotions, from
affection to anger, and can play a significant role in building relationships. In many Western cultures,
maintaining eye contact is seen as a sign of confidence, while in some Asian cultures, it can be interpreted
as disrespectful. The use of gestures also varies greatly between cultures. In some parts of the world,
gestures like the “thumbs-up” or the “peace” sign are widely understood and accepted, but in other
cultures, these same gestures can have negative connotations.
Posture is another essential aspect of body language. Standing or sitting upright is often associated with
confidence, while slouching may indicate insecurity or a lack of interest. How a person positions their
body in relation to others can also signal comfort or discomfort. For example, crossing arms may indicate
defensiveness, while leaning toward someone can suggest interest and engagement. These non-verbal
cues help convey emotions and intentions, making them vital in everyday communication.
In the workplace, understanding body language can improve interactions between colleagues, supervisors,
and clients. People who are able to read and understand body language are often better at reading the
room and responding appropriately to situations. Whether it’s recognizing when someone is
uncomfortable in a meeting or noticing when someone is excited about a new idea, body language helps
us navigate social and professional interactions.

In a world marked by diverse cultures and competing interests, achieving lasting peace can feel like
"walking a tightrope." Conflicts, whether on a local or global scale, arise from various causes, including
territorial disputes, resource competition, and ideological differences. While some conflicts are resolved
peacefully, others escalate into violence, causing widespread suffering and displacement. Understanding
the root causes and dynamics of conflict is crucial for fostering peace and stability.
[I] One of the key strategies for resolving conflicts is diplomacy. [II] International organizations such as

answer to each of the following questions from 23 to 30.
Overcoming Fear and Taking Risks in Life
Fear is a natural emotion that everyone experiences at some point in their lives. It can arise from a variety
of sources, such as uncertainty, failure, or the unknown. While fear can be protective, keeping us from
harm, it can also be paralyzing, preventing us from pursuing our dreams and taking necessary risks.
Overcoming fear is a crucial step toward personal growth, as it allows individuals to break free from self-
imposed limitations and reach their full potential. Many successful people, from entrepreneurs to
athletes, have faced significant fears but chose to act despite them.
Taking risks is often seen as the key to achieving great things in life. It involves stepping outside of one’s
comfort zone and embracing uncertainty. While taking risks can lead to failure, it also opens the door to
new opportunities and personal growth. When individuals take risks, they learn valuable lessons that can
help them succeed in the future. However, risk-taking must be approached with careful consideration. It’s
important to evaluate the potential consequences and make informed decisions before taking action. This
balance between courage and caution is essential in overcoming fear and achieving success.
Building confidence is an important factor in overcoming fear and taking risks. Confidence comes from
experience and knowledge. The more a person faces and conquers their fears, the more confident they
become in their abilities. Confidence allows individuals to take calculated risks and move forward
with greater assurance. On the other hand, a lack of confidence can cause individuals to shy away from
opportunities, missing out on valuable experiences. It’s important to remember that confidence is a skill
4
that can be developed over time with practice and perseverance.
Despite the importance of taking risks, it’s essential to acknowledge that not every risk will lead to
success. Some risks may result in failure, but this should not be seen as a negative outcome. Failure is
often a stepping stone to success, offering lessons that can be applied to future attempts. By viewing
failure as a learning experience rather than a setback, individuals can develop resilience and continue
moving forward. Ultimately, overcoming fear and taking risks is an integral part of living a fulfilling and
meaningful life.

The Role of Biotechnology in Human Health
Biotechnology is revolutionizing the field of human health, offering innovative solutions to some of
the most pressing medical challenges. This dynamic field combines biology and technology to develop
new treatments, improve diagnostics, and even enhance human abilities. From personalized medicine to
groundbreaking gene therapies, biotechnology is changing the way we approach healthcare. It has opened
the door to possibilities once considered science fiction, such as regenerating damaged tissues or curing
previously untreatable diseases. In the long run, these advances could dramatically change the way we
understand and treat diseases.
Gene editing is one of the most promising areas of biotechnology. Tools like CRISPR allow scientists to
precisely modify DNA, potentially eliminating genetic disorders before they manifest. Imagine a world
where conditions like cystic fibrosis or sickle cell anemia are no longer a burden on families. These
advances could also extend to fighting diseases like cancer, where editing genes could strengthen the
body’s immune response. However, these technologies require careful oversight to ensure they are used
5
ethically and responsibly. By addressing these challenges, the scientific community can clear the path
for more widespread and ethical adoption of these tools.
Biotechnology is also breaking new ground in the fight against cancer. Immunotherapy, for instance,
leverages the body’s own immune system to target and destroy cancer cells. Unlike traditional treatments
like chemotherapy, which often harm healthy tissues, immunotherapy offers a more precise and less
invasive alternative. Similarly, biotechnological innovations in drug development are speeding up the
process of bringing life-saving medicines to market. These advancements prove that biotechnology is
"turning the tables" on some of the most challenging diseases, offering hope for millions of patients
worldwide.
[I] In addition to disease treatment, biotechnology is playing a crucial role in preventive medicine.
[II] Advances in genetic screening allow individuals to understand their risk factors for various
conditions, enabling proactive health measures. [III] With early detection and personalized prevention
plans, healthcare providers can help patients make informed lifestyle choices to reduce the likelihood of
developing chronic illnesses. [IV]

edge solutions.
C. Biotechnology’s impact on healthcare is often exaggerated and does not offer many practical or
sustainable solutions.
D. Biotechnology is still in its early stages, but it could address major healthcare challenges in the near
future.
Question 39. Which of the following can be inferred from the passage?
A. Chemotherapy is non-invasive and more precise than immunotherapy
B. Gene editing technologies are not advanced enough to fight cancer, but the potential is there.
C. Advances in biotechnology will eventually eliminate many genetic disorders and chronic diseases.
D. Immunotherapy is more effective than chemotherapy but is still limited to a few specific diseases.
Question 40. Which of the following best summarises the passage?
A. Biotechnology is revolutionizing healthcare with gene editing and immunotherapy, which are quickly
replacing traditional treatments for all diseases, including genetic disorders and cancer.
B. Biotechnology offers mostly preventive measures for healthcare but has had limited success in treating
existing diseases, especially chronic conditions and more complex medical issues.
C. Biotechnology has revolutionized healthcare with genetic screening and advanced preventative care
strategies, although treatments for chronic diseases have not improved significantly over time.
D. Biotechnology is transforming healthcare by introducing gene editing and immunotherapy, offering
new hope for disease treatment and prevention, but it must be approached carefully and ethically.

answer to each of the following questions from 23 to 30.
Parenting in the 21st Century
Parenting in the 21st century comes with its own unique set of challenges and opportunities. With
the rapid advancement of technology, children are growing up in a world vastly different from the one
their parents experienced. The constant presence of digital devices and the internet has made it easier for
children to access information and communicate with others. However, this digital landscape also brings
concerns about online safety, social media influence, and the potential for excessive screen time. As a
result, modern parents face the challenge of balancing technology use with face-to-face interactions and
outdoor activities.
In addition to technological changes, the structure of modern families has also evolved. More
households consist of dual-income parents, single parents, or blended families, leading to different
approaches to parenting. Modern parents must juggle multiple responsibilities, from work to household
chores to child-rearing. This can lead to stress and burnout, making it important for parents to find ways
to manage their time effectively and prioritize their well-being. At the same time, many parents are
placing a greater emphasis on emotional intelligence, mental health, and open communication with their
children. This shift reflects a growing awareness of the importance of nurturing a child’s emotional
development alongside their physical and intellectual growth.
Another key aspect of modern parenting is the increased focus on education. Parents today are
more involved in their children's academic lives than ever before, from helping with homework to
attending parent-teacher conferences. In many cases, parents are also advocating for educational
reforms and striving to create environments where their children can thrive. This involvement is
crucial in ensuring that children receive the best education possible and are well-prepared for future
challenges. However, the pressure to provide a top-tier education can also lead to stress for both parents
and children, as the demands of academic success continue to rise.
Despite these challenges, many parents in the 21st century are finding ways to adapt and thrive.
They are embracing new parenting techniques, exploring different ways to bond with their children, and
prioritizing their families' overall well-being. The key to successful parenting today lies in finding a
balance between tradition and innovation, ensuring that children are raised in a nurturing environment
that prepares them for the future while preserving strong family bonds.

Read the following passage about ecotourism and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to
indicate the best answer to each of the following questions from 31 to 40.
According to the International Ecotourism Society, ecotourism is travel that fosters environmental
responsibility and local well-being. Visiting a rainforest doesn’t qualify unless it benefits the area,
perhaps by creating jobs for locals or conserving the wildlife. The recognition is growing that
environmental preservation and economic gain can coexist.
Costa Rica has been leading the ecotourism movement for some time, and was voted the most
popular destination by TripAdvisor.com in 2012. Its 1999 Certification for Sustainable Tourism (CST)
program, adopted by the UN World Tourism Organization as a model for Latin America, highlights its
pioneering efforts. Thanks to such efforts, over 25 percent of Costa Rica's land is covered in lush national
parks. Its tourism industry generates over a billion dollars annually and provides employment for thousands.
Unfortunately, the "ecotourism" label is sometimes misused for profit. Unethical practices can harm
the environment. One concern is that the overwhelming number of visitors, especially during peak season,
negatively impacts the ecosystem. Ecotourists, drawn to rare flora and fauna, can inadvertently strain these
fragile environments, even with good intentions. Another problem is human-animal interaction. At Costa
Rican national parks, wild monkeys feed on visitors’ garbage and even aggressively steal food.
Controlling abuse isn't easy, either. In developing countries with low wages, corruption can lead
officials to tolerate ecological damage. A large resort, normally prohibited near a sanctuary, might be
allowed if the company bribes government officials. Limited resources are another issue - areas of forests
and beaches requiring an army to protect are often watched by few employees.
[I] While tourists can adversely affect ecosystems, the same areas might have been totally destroyed
by industries like farming, logging, or mining. [II] Tour guides can become educators who train people to
love and care for the environment. [III] Witnessing the beauty of rainforests and rare wildlife at first hand
can also instill a sense of value that visitors hopefully carry home. [IV]
It is easy to be critical of the ecotourism industry. Nevertheless, recognizing the impossibility of
zero impact and the inherent human desire to explore, we must focus on intensifying protection efforts to
ensure undisturbed ecosystems, while potentially stressed, won’t be destroyed.
