Intro Lecture

The document outlines the course structure and expectations for the 1E6 Electrical Engineering class at TCD, emphasizing the interdisciplinary nature of engineering. Students will learn fundamental concepts of electricity, circuit theory, digital systems, and Boolean algebra, with assessments comprising an 80% annual exam and 20% continuous assessment. Lectures will be a mix of live and pre-recorded formats, with additional resources and support available for students to succeed in the course.

1E6 Electrical Engineering

Prof. Naomi Harte

Electronic & Electrical Engineering
School of Engineering
A Quick Survey!!
• Go to www.menti.com and use the code XX

2
Why study Electrical & Electrical
Engineering?
• TCD offers general 2 years
• In practice you can’t draw lines between the different
engineering disciplines
• An engineer’s job is truly inter-disciplinary
• Environment, economics, politics
• Also other branches of engineering
• Example – driverless cars

After 1E6, you will be able to:
• explain the fundamental concepts of electricity and magnetism
and their importance;
• apply fundamental circuit theory and laws to dc resistive circuits;
• analyse the operation of simple circuits in RC and RL
combinations;
• convert between binary and decimal representations and carry
out binary addition, subtraction and multiplication;
• manipulate Boolean expressions so as to minimise the number of
literals using algebra or Karnaugh maps;
• design standard and iterative combinational logic circuits;
• evaluate the complexity and speed of combinational designs;

5
Content covered
• Basic Electric Fields
• Simple DC circuits
• Electromagnetism
• Digital Systems and Binary Numbers
• Boolean Algebra
• Combinational Logic

6
Marking
• 80% annual exam
• 20% CA
• Lab
• Online quizzes
• Note supplemental based 100% on exam

7
Lectures
• Notes will be on Blackboard
• You need to listen to all the lectures
• Whether pre-recorded, live, or later on
• Notes are incomplete
• Only a reminder …
• Expected to do additional reading, videos and examples
in your own time
• Read the course text
• Attend (virtually) & engage (reality)!

8
How will lectures happen?
• 3 hours a week in the timetable
• Announcements on Blackboard
• Friday of previous week, tell you plan for following week
• Pre-recorded material a few days in advance of slot for flexibility
(where I can)
• Friday will be live online most weeks
• Worked problems and deeper explanations
• Wed always pre-recorded
• Mon – will do a mixture as necessary
• All live content will also get recorded
• 180 of you responded to my survey….
9
My broadband/Internet access arrangement is
a barrier to my joining live lectures

10
I don't mind whether lectures are pre-recorded or
happen live, so long as the lecturer communicates
clearly to me as to when I need to have
covered material.

11
There are 3 lecture slots for 1E6 each week, so you will get 3 hours of content
to watch a week, whatever format we use and that will always get recorded. You
will have 1 live tutorial with a TA per week. What format of live contact from the
lecturer would you prefer?

• The lecturer available for 10 minutes at the end of the timetabled hour, regardless
of whether the lecture happened live or was prerecorded.
• The lecturer available for a full 30 minutes once a week to answer some questions
and work through a nominated question live each week. Other lectures would be
pre-recorded.
• The lecturer to do a full 1 hour slot once every two weeks, where they take
questions, highlight what might be more tricky parts of the material, and work
though 1 or two nominated questions. Other lectures would be pre-recorded.
• Have a forum online for posting questions and then have a live slot whenever they
think a full hour is warranted. Other lectures would be pre-recorded.
• The lecturer teaching live and online at each lecture slot.
• I don't really mind as long as the lecturer is available to engage live on a regular
basis and responsive to feedback and questions

12
Lecture “attendance”
• I know this is not easy
• Up to YOU to keep up with the lecture material
• Transition to University
• Blah blah….
• I can see if people are not checking into material and
attending
• But I understand you might fall behind a little
• Will check around Week 3, 6 etc that people are catching up
• Do your best
• Routine required
