Section 1
Introduction
IDEA® is a powerful, user-friendly data analysis tool designed to help auditors, accountants and other finance
professionals perform data analysis quickly to help improve audits and identify control breakdowns.
IDEA Educational
An IDEA Educational license is a perpetual standalone license used by students and educators. The IDEA
Educational license is automatically installed when you install IDEA. You do not have to register your license.
l You can only import a maximum of 5,000 records (rows) from any supported source file. If the source file
contains more than 5,000 records, then only the first 5,000 records are imported.
l Printed reports and databases include a "For educational purposes only." watermark.
An IDEA Standard license is a standalone license that is tied to the machine on which it is installed. If
required, you can revoke the license and move it to another machine. All license management actions,
such as register, renew, and revoke are performed using Caseware IDEA License Manager which is
installed with IDEA.
CI301 IDEA Installation Guide
IDEA Network licenses are typically used in organizations with a large number of auditors, or
organizations that utilize virtual environments (Virtual Machines, Citrix, Remote Desktop).
Your registered license gives you access to IDEA for a determined amount of time based on your subscription.

Microsoft Access Import and Export Requirements
Microsoft Access Database Engine 2016 (64-bit) is required to import Microsoft Access files or
export IDEA databases to Microsoft Access files.
Microsoft Access Database Engine 2016 (64-bit) Redistributable will not be installed if any 32-
bit Microsoft Office software/ drivers are detected on your machine.
Hardware Requirements
The following table outlines the minimum hardware requirements:
RAM 8 GB 16 GB
ARM-Based Processors
'Windows on Arm', which runs on ARM-based processors such as Apple Silicon (M1/M2), Microsoft
ARM (SQ1/SQ2) and Qualcomm Snapdragon (7c/8c), is not capable of installing or running IDEA.
There are no workarounds available that allow IDEA to be installed or run on these devices.
11
CI301 IDEA Installation Guide
MacOS Support
IDEA is a Windows exclusive product. However, virtual machine compatible licensed copies of IDEA
may run in a Windows virtual machine hosted on an Apple product using Parallels Desktop or a
similar platform (see additional note of ARM-based processors). Caseware does not test this
functionality, and we rely on the virtualization solution's conformance statement for compatibility.
DPI/Display Scaling
IDEA does not support DPI/display scaling. For high resolution monitors/screens, it is recommended
to adjust the screen resolution for legibility.
For Windows 10 and 11, it is also recommended to enable the Override high DPI scaling behavior
feature and select scaling performed by System. To enable this feature, access the Properties dialog
box for idea.exe and click Change high DPI settings on the Compatibility tab.
Administrator Privileges
All editions of IDEA and its associated tools must be installed with administrator privileges.
l HTTP/TCP Port 80 and HTTPs/TCP 443 must be accessible. These ports are used for online license
registration, accessing Passport, IDEA Lab and Caseware Cloud.
l If these ports are not accessible, offline registration must be used. Passport, IDEA Lab and
Caseware Cloud will not be accessible.
l UDP (User Datagram Protocol) port 5093 must be open on the Caseware Network License Server (NLS)
machine and all IDEA client machines to allow proper communication.

5. Locate Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6), and check the box if it is not already checked.
On the machine where IDEA is installed, you must also set the environment variable:
Note: If creating a user variable (i.e. admin), only the account admin will use this variable. Other accounts
will ignore the setting.
b. Variable Value: 6
If IDEA is running on the machine when the Environment Variable has been updated, please restart IDEA.
Language Support
If you are installing a non-English edition of IDEA:
l You must also install the Microsoft .NET Framework 4.8 Language Pack.
l Non-English editions of IDEA are only supported on operating systems of the same language and
regional settings (e.g., French IDEA on a French operating system).

CI301 IDEA Installation Guide
Technical Notes
l Coexistence of IDEA and Caseware Network License Server
In a network implementation, do not install IDEA and Caseware Network License Server (NLS) on the
same machine.
It is important to upgrade Caseware License Server to the latest version available. This ensures that
improvements and updates made to licensing are fully implemented within your system.
Different IDEA versions (e.g., IDEA 10 and IDEA 11) cannot exist on the same machine.
l Microsoft Office
l Silent Install
If IDEA is installed silently with the parameter to centralize all IDEA projects and files for all users, the
Samples project is locked to the first user to launch IDEA. Similarly, the Tutorial project is locked to the
first user to access that project. If other users try to access those locked projects, they will not have
access to the project's Project Overview and Library features. Refer to the Locking and Unlocking
Projects topic in the IDEA help for more information.
l Project Overview
Due to Project Overview enhancements in IDEA 12, Project Overview information loss can occur if IDEA
12 Managed projects are opened in IDEA 11.x and earlier.
IDEA supports the use of Microsoft OneDrive as an external drive through specific scenarios, outlined
below. In each scenario, database files can be automatically synchronized with the OneDrive drive.
In this scenario, one user uses a single computer and logs into OneDrive using a local account.
Before installing or operating IDEA, you must also start OneDrive with a local account (Hotmail or
Outlook account required), and ensure that the IDEA folder has been configured to be
synchronized with OneDrive.
In this scenario, one user uses a single computer to synchronize IDEA databases with a OneDrive
account using their Microsoft account.
When using a Microsoft account, you will automatically be logged into OneDrive. The option to
select folders to synchronize is not available.
14
Section 1: System Requirements
In this scenario, two machines are used, both machines logged into the same OneDrive account.
When a database is saved using computer 1, that database should be available on OneDrive on
the second computer.
In this scenario, two users are on the Windows Server using different OneDrive accounts to
synchronize their files. Each local user should be able to synchronize with their OneDrive account
while using IDEA concurrently.
Before installing IDEA, create the local accounts required. Each local account should have their
own account for OneDrive. IDEA is installed through an admin account.
15
Section 2

(IDEA Network) on a Network License Server (NLS).
See the IDEA Licensing topic in the IDEA Help or the included Caseware IDEA License Manager
Guide for more information.
21
Appendix I
Caseware IDEA License Manager is a license management tool. IDEA Standalone users register, renew or
revoke a license (either online or offline).
The Caseware IDEA License Manager window lists the following license types:
l Provisional License: A Provisional license gives you full access to the product's features for 15
consecutive days from the time you first launch the product. During the Provisional license period, you
are prompted to register your license every time you load the product.
Provisional License
If you are installing Caseware IDEA License Manager and IDEA separately, you must install the
Caseware IDEA License Manager first and then install IDEA to engage the Provisional license.
l Registered License: A registered license has an associated authorization code and lock code that is
specific to the machine on which it is installed. It also has an expiry date.
By default, Caseware IDEA License Manager installs automatically with IDEA. However, you can choose to
install Caseware IDEA License Manager separately from the IDEA installation.
Important
Caseware IDEA License Manager must reside on the same machine as IDEA.
