Introduction

Thank you for choosing IDEA.

IDEA® is a powerful, user-friendly data analysis tool designed to help auditors, accountants and other finance
professionals perform data analysis quickly to help improve audits and identify control breakdowns.

IDEA Educational
An IDEA Educational license is a perpetual standalone license used by students and educators. The IDEA
Educational license is automatically installed when you install IDEA. You do not have to register your license.

IDEA Educational has the following limitations:

l You can only import a maximum of 5,000 records (rows) from any supported source file. If the source file
contains more than 5,000 records, then only the first 5,000 records are imported.

l You do not have access to Caseware Cloud.

l Printed reports and databases include a "For educational purposes only." watermark.

IDEA Standard and IDEA Network

IDEA can be installed on multiple machines within your organization. It includes a complimentary 15-day
Provisional license that lets you use IDEA at full functionality for 15 days. After the Provisional license period,
you must do one of the following to continue using IDEA:

l Register an IDEA Standard license

An IDEA Standard license is a standalone license that is tied to the machine on which it is installed. If
required, you can revoke the license and move it to another machine. All license management actions,
such as register, renew, and revoke are performed using Caseware IDEA License Manager which is
installed with IDEA.
CI301 IDEA Installation Guide

l Connect to an IDEA Network license

IDEA Network licenses are typically used in organizations with a large number of auditors, or
organizations that utilize virtual environments (Virtual Machines, Citrix, Remote Desktop).

Your registered license gives you access to IDEA for a determined amount of time based on your subscription.

Installing IDEA in a Network Implementation

Do not install IDEA on the same machine as Caseware Network License Server as it could corrupt the
licensing system.
1 A virtual machine is an instance of Windows and requires a hypervisor to run.

2 Remote Desktop is the use of Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) to a physical or virtual machine.

3 The use of the Citrix suite to deploy Single Session, Multi-Session or Golden Images. Citrix Apps and Desktops 7 2109 is supported.

4 A terminal server allows users to connect concurrently via RDP to a single physical or virtual machine.

5 When IDEA Network is installed on a Windows Server operating system, the commuter license feature (check out/check in a license) is

disabled due to the multi-tenant environment.

MacOS Support

IDEA is a Windows exclusive product. However, virtual machine compatible licensed copies of IDEA
may run in a Windows virtual machine hosted on an Apple product using Parallels Desktop or a
similar platform (see additional note of ARM-based processors). Caseware does not test this
functionality, and we rely on the virtualization solution's conformance statement for compatibility.

DPI/Display Scaling
IDEA does not support DPI/display scaling. For high resolution monitors/screens, it is recommended
to adjust the screen resolution for legibility.
For Windows 10 and 11, it is also recommended to enable the Override high DPI scaling behavior
feature and select scaling performed by System. To enable this feature, access the Properties dialog
box for idea.exe and click Change high DPI settings on the Compatibility tab.

Administrator Privileges
All editions of IDEA and its associated tools must be installed with administrator privileges.

Caseware IDEA License Manager Accessibility

If you are running IDEA and Caseware IDEA License Manager behind a firewall or proxy, ensure the following:

CI301 IDEA Installation Guide

Technical Notes
l Coexistence of IDEA and Caseware Network License Server

In a network implementation, do not install IDEA and Caseware Network License Server (NLS) on the
same machine.

l Upgrading Caseware Network License Server

It is important to upgrade Caseware License Server to the latest version available. This ensures that
improvements and updates made to licensing are fully implemented within your system.

l Coexistence of Different IDEA Versions

Different IDEA versions (e.g., IDEA 10 and IDEA 11) cannot exist on the same machine.

l Microsoft Office

IDEA is compatible with Microsoft Office 2013 (64-bit) or later.

l Silent Install

If IDEA is installed silently with the parameter to centralize all IDEA projects and files for all users, the
Samples project is locked to the first user to launch IDEA. Similarly, the Tutorial project is locked to the
first user to access that project. If other users try to access those locked projects, they will not have
access to the project's Project Overview and Library features. Refer to the Locking and Unlocking
Projects topic in the IDEA help for more information.

l Project Overview

Due to Project Overview enhancements in IDEA 12, Project Overview information loss can occur if IDEA
12 Managed projects are opened in IDEA 11.x and earlier.

l IDEA Compatibility with Microsoft OneDrive

IDEA supports the use of Microsoft OneDrive as an external drive through specific scenarios, outlined
below. In each scenario, database files can be automatically synchronized with the OneDrive drive.

l One computer using a local account

In this scenario, one user uses a single computer and logs into OneDrive using a local account.

Before installing or operating IDEA, you must also start OneDrive with a local account (Hotmail or
Outlook account required), and ensure that the IDEA folder has been configured to be
synchronized with OneDrive.

l One computer using a Microsoft account

In this scenario, one user uses a single computer to synchronize IDEA databases with a OneDrive
account using their Microsoft account.

When using a Microsoft account, you will automatically be logged into OneDrive. The option to
select folders to synchronize is not available.

l Two computers using the same local or Microsoft account

14
Section 1: System Requirements

In this scenario, two machines are used, both machines logged into the same OneDrive account.
When a database is saved using computer 1, that database should be available on OneDrive on
the second computer.

l Concurrent Users on Windows Server, each using a unique OneDrive account

In this scenario, two users are on the Windows Server using different OneDrive accounts to
synchronize their files. Each local user should be able to synchronize with their OneDrive account
while using IDEA concurrently.

Before installing IDEA, create the local accounts required. Each local account should have their
own account for OneDrive. IDEA is installed through an admin account.

15
Section 2

Upgrading

Welcome back! We are excited that you have chosen to upgrade your IDEA software. You will be getting the
latest features, enhancements, and bug fixes that IDEA has to offer. For more details on the IDEA 12.4 release,
please refer to the Release Notes.

Upgrading to Windows 10/ Windows 11

If you are upgrading to a later version of Windows, such as Windows 10 or 11, it is recommended to
upgrade your operating system and then upgrade IDEA to ensure that all IDEA prerequisites are
updated. However, if you upgraded IDEA first and then did the Windows 10/ Windows 11 upgrade,
run the IDEA installer again to resolve any issues.

Windows 10/ Windows 11 Users

When applying major updates, it is best practice to apply the updates one at a time to avoid causing
corruption with IDEA or its dependencies.

8. Alternatively, you can also perform a silent install for ODBC Driver using the following command:

ODBCDriver_Setup.exe /S /v" /qn /norestart ACCEPTEULA=1"

26
Appendix III

Performing a Silent Install

l Your user account must have local Administrator privileges on the computer on which you will
run the silent install command.
l The End User License Agreement is unavailable for viewing during the silent install procedure.
If you do not agree to the terms in the End User License Agreement, do not perform a silent
install of IDEA.

Default Command
Use the following command to install IDEA with all of its default settings:

Setup.exe /S /v" /qn /norestart ACCEPTEULA=1"

Ensure that no spaces appear between the equal sign (=) and the parameter values.

You can also add optional parameters to customize your install.

CI301 IDEA Installation Guide

Optional Parameters
Parameter Description
INSTALLDIR=<destination folder's full path> Set the custom folder for installing the program files.

AUTHCODE=<authorization code> Specify a valid authorization code to register your IDEA product
automatically during the install.

Note: This optional parameter requires an internet connection

during installation to automatically register the license.

Note: When you install IDEA for the first time and the
registration fails, IDEA's 15-day Provisional license is enabled.
IDEA then prompts you to register a license or connect to a
Network License Server (NLS).

Note: When you upgrade using a different authorization code

and the registration fails, IDEA reverts to the original
authorization code.

Note: The authorization code is registered when you use

AUTHCODE to upgrade from an NLS licensing model to a
standalone licensing model. However, IDEA will still use the NLS
licensing model. Therefore, you must access the IDEA Licensing
dialog box in IDEA and select the IDEA Standard option.

IDEA_DOCUMENTS_FOLDER=<destination folder's full path> Set a central location for storing IDEA project information for all
users.
After a default silent installation, the "My IDEA Documents"
folder and its sub-folders (IDEA Projects, Local Library, etc.) are
created in each user's Documents system folder.
You can use this optional parameter to set a central location to
store all IDEA project information for all users. When you specify
a custom location, the sub-folders (IDEA Projects, Local Library,
etc.) are created under the specified location.
Note the following when using this optional parameter:

l The IDEA Documents folder for existing restricted users

is not updated to use the specified central location. In
the Windows Registry Editor, locate HKEY_CURRENT_
USER > Software and delete the Caseware IDEA folder.
The central location specified by IDEA_DOCUMENTS_
FOLDER is used the next time the restricted users open
IDEA.

l If the specified location is invalid to users (e.g., they do

not have sufficient permissions to access the location,
the name is too long, etc.), when the user launches
IDEA, the IDEA Documents folder defaults to
C:\Program Files\Caseware
IDEA\IDEA\UserFiles\Samples on the user's machine.

LMINSTALLDIR=<destination folder's full path> Set the custom folder for installing Caseware IDEA License
Manager program files.

28
Appendix III: Performing a Silent Install

Parameter Description
ALLOWSENDINGMETADATA=0 Disable automatic system information collection. By default,
automatic system information collection is enabled. The default
setting is enabled when this optional parameter is excluded or
when it is set to 1.

DISABLELICENSEEXPIRYWARNING=0 Disable license expiry notifications. The default setting is enabled

when this optional parameter is excluded or when it is set to 1.

ENABLEWEBTABS=0 Disable web tabs in the Main window. IDEA will use the default
web browser instead. The default setting is enabled when this
optional parameter is excluded or when it is set to 1.

IDEA_NLS_CONFIGURATION=<machine that hosts Network License Specify the Network License Server (NLS) machine to which you
Server> want to connect.
Use one of the following to specify the NLS machine:

l IP address - the NLS machine must have a static IP

address and must be on the same internal network as
the machine on which you are running IDEA.
(recommended)

l Machine name - the NLS machine must be in the same

domain as the machine on which you are running IDEA.

l Fully qualified domain name (FQDN)

When you start IDEA, it automatically attempts to connect to a

license on the specified NLS machine. When upgrading, this
parameter value replaces the current NLS configuration in IDEA.

Note: Contact your IT Department for assistance in selecting

the preferred method of specifying the NLS machine.

Example using optional parameters:

Setup.exe /S /v" /qn /norestart ACCEPTEULA=1 INSTALLDIR=C:\InstallIDEAFolder IDEA_DOCUMENTS_
FOLDER=C:\DOCUMENTSFOLDER"

l Ensure that you add a space between optional parameters and that quotation marks (") appear
after v and at the end of the command.
l Ensure that no spaces appear between the equal sign (=) and the parameter values.

Repairing and Upgrading

IDEA Network Users

You must check in your commuter license before uninstalling or upgrading IDEA. Failure to do so
could affect the number of available commuter licenses on the Network License Server.

You can repair a silent install to change the original silent install settings.

For example, if you performed a silent install and disabled web tabs but later decided you want to enable web
tabs, you can repair the install with the following command:

setup.exe /s /v"/qn ACCEPTEULA=1 REINSTALLMODE=em REINSTALL=ALL ENABLEWEBTABS=1"

Performing a Silent Upgrade

To perform a silent upgrade to the latest IDEA version, use the command and optional parameters detailed for
a silent install.

IDEA 10.x or Earlier Users

IDEA 12.4 is a 64-bit application that can only run on a 64-bit operating system. Due to this enhancement and
extensive licensing changes, you cannot automatically upgrade to IDEA12.4 from IDEA 10.x or earlier. You
must perform a manual uninstall of your current IDEA software before performing the silent upgrade to IDEA
12.4.

IDEA 11 Users
The silent upgrade process automatically uninstalls your existing version of IDEA and installs the latest IDEA
software (including Caseware IDEA License Manager, if applicable) on the machine that currently hosts the
IDEA software. You will not have to re-register your license.
