Second Conditional – Grammar Explanation & Exercise

Grammar Explanation: Second Conditional

The second conditional is used to talk about imaginary, unlikely, or hypothetical situations
in the present or future.

Structure: If + past simple, would + base verb

Examples:

- If I had a car, I would drive to work.

- If she studied more, she would pass the exam.

Key Points:

1. Use the past simple in the if-clause (even for future meaning).

2. Use would + base verb in the main clause.

3. This conditional is used for unreal or imagined situations.

4. You can also use could or might in place of would.

- If I were you, I would talk to her.

- If we won the lottery, we could travel the world.
