1.5 ABOUT HUMAN RESOURCE MANAGEMENT OF MODERN
ENGINEERING WORKS:

HUMAN RESOURCE MANAGEMENT

INTRODUCTION

1.5.1 What is Human Resource Management (HRM)?

Human Resource Management (HRM or HR) is the strategic approach to the

effective management of people in a company or organization such that they help

their business gain a competitive advantage. It is designed to maximize employess

performance in service of an employer’s strategic objectives.

HRM is primarily concerned with the management of people within

organizations, focusing on policies and systems. HR department are responsible for

overseeing employee – benefits, employee recruitment, training and development,

performance appraisal and benefits systems.

Human Resource (HR) is a product of the human relations movement of the early

20th century, when researcher began documenting ways of creating business value

through the strategic management of the workforce. It was initially dominated by

transactional work, such as payroll and benefits the administration, but due to

globalization, company consolidation, technological advances, and further

research.

15
HR as of 2015 focuses on strategic initiatives like mergers and acquisitions,

talent management, succession planning, industrial and labor relations, and

diversity and inclusion.

In the current global work environment, most companies focus on lowering

employee turnover and on retaining the talent and knowledge held by their

workforce. New hiring not only entails a high cost bust also increases the risk of a

new employee not being able to adequately replace the position of the previous

employee.

 Human resource management (HRM) is the effective management of

people at work :

 The goal: make workers more satisfied and productive.

 When an organization is concerned about people, its total philosophy,

culture, and orientation reflect it.

 Every manager must be concerned with people, whether or not there is a

human resources department

Thus, HRM is a system that focuses on human resources development on one hand

and effective management of people on the other hand so that people will enjoy

human dignity in their employment.

16
1.5.2 DEFINITION OF HRM

There are two different definitions. The first definition of HRM is that “It is

the process of managing people in organizations in a structured and through

manner”. This covers the fields of staffing, retention of people, pay and perks

setting and management, performance management, change management and

taking care of exists from the company to round off the activities. This is the

traditional definition of HRM which leads some experts to define it as a modern

version of the Personnel Management function that was used earlier.

The second definition of HRM encompasses “The management of people in

organization from a macro prospective i.e. managing people in the form of a

collective relationship between management and employees.” This approach

focuses on the objectives and outcomes of the HRM functions. It means that the

HR functions in contemporary organizations is concerned with the notions of

people enabling, people development and a focus on making the “ employment

relationship” fulfilling for both the management and employees.

In simple words, Human Resource management is management

function that helps manager to recruit, select, train and develop organization

members. Or HRM is a process of making the effective us of human resources so

that the set goals are achieved.
