Thermodynamic principles and it's applications
Introduction
Thermodynamics is the branch of physics that deals with the relationships between heat, work,
temperature, and energy. It describes how energy is converted between different forms and how
it flows between systems and their environments. The subject is governed by four fundamental
laws – the Zeroth through Third Laws of Thermodynamics – which establish the concepts of
thermal equilibrium, energy conservation, the direction of spontaneous processes, and the
behavior of entropy at low temperatures. These laws form the basis for understanding a vast
range of natural phenomena and engineered systems, from simple heat engines to complex
biological metabolism. In this essay, we will review each of the four laws, define key concepts
(such as system, surroundings, energy, entropy, enthalpy, and free energy), examine idealized
thermodynamic processes, and explore real-world applications in engineering (e.g. engines and
power plants) as well as in chemistry and biology (e.g. reaction spontaneity and metabolism). All
claims are supported with citations from reputable academic and scientific sources.
The Four Laws of Thermodynamics
1. Zeroth Law
The Zeroth Law of Thermodynamics establishes the concept of temperature and thermal
equilibrium. It states that if two systems (A and B) are each in thermal equilibrium with a third
system (C), then A and B are in thermal equilibrium with each other. In other words, all three
share the same temperature. This law justifies the use of thermometers: one can calibrate a
thermometer (system C) by bringing it into equilibrium with object A and then object B; if both
give the same reading, A and B are at the same temperature. Formally, the Zeroth Law provides
a basis for defining a temperature scale and for saying that temperature is a transitive property.
2. First Law
The First Law of Thermodynamics is essentially the law of energy conservation applied to
thermodynamic systems. It states that the total energy of an isolated system is constant and that
energy can be transferred into or out of a system only as heat or work. In formula form, for a
closed system, one writes ΔU = Q – W (using the sign convention that W is work done by the
system), or equivalently ΔU = Q + W (if W is work done on the system). Here ΔU is the change
in internal energy of the system, Q is the heat added to the system, and W is the work done by or
on the system. This law implies that energy cannot be created or destroyed – only converted
between heat, work, and other forms. For example, heating a gas (adding Q) at constant volume
increases its internal energy (raising its temperature), while allowing the gas to expand and do
work (positive W) reduces its internal energy. Overall, any gain in energy (as heat or work) must
show up as an increase in the system’s internal energy or as energy leaving the system.
3. Second Law
The Second Law of Thermodynamics introduces the concept of entropy and specifies the
direction of spontaneous processes. One common formulation is that in any spontaneous
(irreversible) process in an isolated system, the entropy S of the universe (system plus
surroundings) always increases. Equivalently, heat will not flow spontaneously from a colder
body to a hotter body; and 100% conversion of heat into work in a cyclic process is impossible.
Physically, this means that real processes have an inherent irreversibility: they tend to spread out
or “disperse” energy. In a system undergoing a spontaneous change, some energy becomes
unavailable to do useful work. Mathematically, for an isolated universe, ΔS_univ = ΔS_sys +
ΔS_surr ≥ 0. A reversible process is the limiting case of equality (ΔS_univ = 0). An intuitive
statement of the Second Law is: “The entropy of the universe increases in any spontaneous
process.” This law explains why heat engines cannot be 100% efficient (some heat must be
dumped to the cold reservoir) and why refrigerators require work to extract heat from a cold
space.
4. Third Law
The Third Law of Thermodynamics provides an absolute reference for entropy. It states that
the entropy of a perfect crystalline substance approaches zero as the temperature approaches
absolute zero (0 K). Equivalently, a perfectly ordered crystal at 0 K has S = 0. This implies that it
is impossible to reach absolute zero in a finite number of steps, since removing all thermal
motion would take infinite operations. The Third Law allows the definition of an absolute
entropy scale and explains why entropy changes become very small at very low temperatures. In
practical terms, as T → 0, systems become perfectly ordered (minimum entropy), and no further
heat can be extracted to do work.
Key Thermodynamic Concepts
Thermodynamic analysis relies on clear definitions of systems, energy, and state functions.
Below are definitions of key concepts, drawn from standard sources:
System and Surroundings: System refers to the specific part of the universe being
studied (e.g. the gas in a piston), while surroundings are everything external to the
system. The boundary between system and surroundings can be real (a container wall) or
imaginary. Together they comprise the universe. The laws of thermodynamics govern
exchanges of heat and work across this boundary.
Internal Energy (U): A thermodynamic state function representing the total microscopic
energy of the system. It is the sum of the kinetic and potential energies of all the particles
(molecules or atoms) in the system. For example, an ideal gas has no intermolecular
potential energy, so its internal energy is purely kinetic (proportional to its temperature).
Any change in internal energy ΔU reflects heat added or work done: from the First Law,
ΔU = Q + W.
Enthalpy (H): A related state function defined as H = U + PV, where P is pressure and V
is volume. Enthalpy is useful when dealing with processes at constant pressure. It can be
thought of as the “heat content” of the system. For a process at constant pressure, the
change in enthalpy ΔH equals the heat flow into the system (Q_p). In chemistry, ΔH is
often reported for reactions (positive for endothermic, negative for exothermic).
Entropy (S): A measure of energy dispersal or disorder in a system. More rigorously,
entropy is defined via reversible heat transfers: dS = δQ_rev/T. Intuitively, entropy
quantifies how spread out energy is among available microstates. Entropy tends to
increase in spontaneous processes. For example, when an ordered solid melts to a liquid,
its entropy increases because the molecules have more accessible configurations (more
dispersal of energy). The Second Law states that the total entropy change of system plus
surroundings is nonnegative for any real process.
Gibbs Free Energy (G): A state function combining enthalpy and entropy, defined for
processes at constant temperature (T) and pressure: G=H−TSG = H - TS. The change in
Gibbs free energy is ΔG=ΔH−TΔS\Delta G = \Delta H - T \Delta S. Gibbs free energy is
used to predict spontaneity of reactions: if ΔG < 0, the process is spontaneous under
constant T and P; if ΔG > 0, it is non-spontaneous. At equilibrium, ΔG = 0, and the
reaction quotient equals the equilibrium constant (ΔG° = –RT ln K). In biological and
chemical contexts, ΔG is the useful “free” energy available to do work.
Thermodynamic Processes
Thermodynamic processes describe how a system changes from one state to another. Common
idealized processes include:
Isothermal process: The temperature of the system remains constant (ΔT = 0). For an
ideal gas, this means internal energy is unchanged, so heat added equals work done (Q =
–W). On a pressure-volume (P–V) diagram, an isothermal process is a smooth hyperbolic
curve (since PV=nRT=constantPV = nRT = \text{constant}). For example, when a gas
expands slowly while maintaining thermal contact with a heat bath, it does work on the
surroundings and absorbs an equal amount of heat.
Adiabatic process: No heat is exchanged with the surroundings (Q = 0). Any change in
the system’s energy is due to work only (ΔU = W). In a fast expansion or compression
where there is no time for heat transfer, the gas’s temperature will change. An adiabatic
process also appears as a curved line on a P–V diagram, steeper than the isothermal curve
for the same start and end points. In an adiabatic expansion the gas cools, whereas in
adiabatic compression it heats.
Isobaric process: Pressure remains constant (ΔP = 0). The system can expand or
contract, doing work or having work done on it (W = P ΔV). Heat flow will generally
change the internal energy and thus temperature. On a P–V diagram, an isobaric process
is a horizontal line. For example, heating a gas in a cylinder with a movable piston
against constant external pressure will increase its volume and do work, with the heat
added equaling ΔU + PΔV.
Isochoric (or isovolumetric) process: Volume remains constant (ΔV = 0). No
mechanical work is done (W = 0), so any heat added to the system changes its internal
energy and temperature (ΔU = Q_v). On a P–V diagram, an isochoric process is a vertical
line. For instance, heating a fixed volume of gas in a rigid container increases its pressure
and temperature, with all the added heat increasing internal energy.

Each of these processes is an abstraction. Real engines and cycles approximate sequences of
such processes (e.g. the Carnot cycle combines isothermal and adiabatic steps). The P–V
diagrams in the figure illustrate the characteristic shapes: constant-volume processes (vertical
line) do no work; constant-pressure processes (horizontal line) do work equal to P ΔVP\,ΔV; and
isothermal/adiabatic expansions produce hyperbolic-like curves.
Applications in Engineering and Industry
Thermodynamic principles are foundational in engineering systems. Heat engines are devices
that convert heat into mechanical work by exploiting temperature differences and the laws of
thermodynamics. As OpenStax notes, “Gasoline and diesel engines, jet engines, and steam
turbines that generate electricity are all examples of heat engines”. In a heat engine, fuel
combustion or another heat source raises the temperature of a working fluid, which then expands
to do work (e.g. moving a piston or turning a turbine). The efficiency of any heat engine is
limited by the Second Law; the theoretical maximum efficiency is given by the Carnot
efficiency. This result was first derived by Sadi Carnot, who showed that no engine operating
between two thermal reservoirs can be more efficient than a reversible (Carnot) engine. MIT
News explains that this efficiency equals the temperature difference between hot and cold
reservoirs divided by the hot temperature. In practice, real engines fall short of Carnot: for
example, modern car engines convert only ~20–30% of fuel energy into work, compared to their
Carnot limit (which might be ~30–40% for the same temperatures).

Refrigerators and heat pumps operate on reversed engine cycles. By performing work (usually
via an electric compressor), these machines transfer heat from a cold space to a hotter one. As
OpenStax explains, “Heat pumps, air conditioners, and refrigerators utilize heat transfer of
energy from low to high temperatures… from a cold reservoir and deliver energy into a hot one.
This requires work input, WW”. In a domestic refrigerator, electrical work drives a cycle that
absorbs heat from the refrigerated compartment (cold reservoir) and expels it into the room (hot
reservoir). The coefficient of performance (COP), defined as heat removed from the cold side
per work input, measures a refrigerator’s effectiveness.
Large-scale power plants are also heat engines. For example, a coal-fired power plant burns fuel
to heat water and generate steam. The high-pressure steam expands through turbines to generate
electricity. According to OpenStax, such plants have efficiencies around 40–45%, limited by
thermodynamics (many coal plants recover ~85% of fuel energy as heat, but only ~40–45% of
that becomes electricity). In all cases, thermal efficiency is defined as the ratio of net work
output to heat input. No real engine can reach 100% efficiency because some heat must always
be rejected to the cold reservoir (as required by the Second Law). Thus, waste heat is
unavoidable.
Applications in Chemistry and Biology
Thermodynamics is equally crucial in chemistry and biology, where it governs reaction
spontaneity, equilibrium, and metabolic processes. In chemical reactions at constant pressure and
temperature, the Gibbs free energy change ΔG determines spontaneity: ΔG combines enthalpy
and entropy changes via ΔG=ΔH−TΔS\Delta G = \Delta H - T\Delta S. A reaction will proceed

positive ΔG means the reverse is favored. At equilibrium ΔG = 0, and the ratio of product to
reactant concentrations equals the equilibrium constant; as Cooper notes, “the equilibrium
constant for the reaction… is directly related to ΔG°”. Thus, thermodynamics predicts which
reactions can occur on their own and what the equilibrium composition will be.
Biological metabolism involves many coupled reactions, often driven by ATP hydrolysis. Cells
rely on the energy currency ATP (adenosine triphosphate) because ATP hydrolysis releases a
large amount of free energy. As Cooper explains, the bonds between ATP’s phosphates are
“high-energy” because their hydrolysis produces a substantial negative ΔG. Standard ΔG°′ for
ATP → ADP + Pi is –7.3 kcal/mol, and under cellular conditions the actual ΔG is about –12
kcal/mol. This means one molecule of ATP hydrolyzed to ADP releases roughly 12 kcal/mol of
usable free energy. Because of this large energy drop (negative ΔG), ATP hydrolysis can be
coupled to otherwise unfavorable (positive ΔG) reactions. As the NCBI Cell textbook notes, “the
hydrolysis of ATP can be used to drive other energy-requiring reactions”. In practice, cells
perform endergonic biosynthetic reactions (which alone have ΔG > 0) only when they are paired
with ATP breakdown. For instance, the phosphorylation of glucose in glycolysis is driven
forward by coupling it to ATP hydrolysis. In this way, thermodynamic principles explain how
biological systems harness energy: favorable processes (ΔG < 0) are used to power necessary but
unfavorable processes via chemical coupling.
Another chemical application is understanding equilibrium. The standard free energy change
ΔG° of a reaction is related to the equilibrium constant K by ΔG° = –RT ln K. Thus, knowledge
of enthalpy and entropy changes (and temperature) allows prediction of equilibrium yields. In
physical chemistry, the Clausius and van ’t Hoff relations (which describe how equilibrium shifts
with temperature) also derive from the same thermodynamic laws.
Conclusion
Thermodynamics provides a unified framework for understanding energy transformations in all
scientific fields. The Zeroth through Third Laws establish the rules of thermal equilibrium,
energy conservation, spontaneous direction, and entropy at absolute zero. Key concepts like
internal energy, enthalpy, entropy, and free energy allow precise predictions of system behavior.
Ideal processes (isothermal, adiabatic, etc.) help model real cycles in engines and refrigerators,
while real-world applications – from automotive engines and power plants to cellular metabolism
and chemical reactions – all obey thermodynamic constraints. These principles dictate the limits
of efficiency and spontaneity: for example, no engine can exceed Carnot’s limit, and no
spontaneous reaction can occur with ΔG > 0. In both engineering and biology, thermodynamics
explains why some processes require input work or energy (such as refrigerators and ATP-
dependent reactions) and others proceed on their own. By grounding these applications in
rigorous laws and equations, we gain predictive power over systems ranging from steam turbines
to living cells.
