The Death Of Ivan Ilych Essay
I am majoring in psychology, with the aspiration of earning a Ph.D. At my core, I am a people
person, which I define as someone who is invested in the human condition in all its varieties. I have
a particular love for literature, philosophy, and stand up comedy. Nothing brings me greater than
making someone laugh. Ultimately, I want to make a positive impact in the lives of others. Through
Phi Theta Kappa, I can achieve my goals, develop lifelong friendships, and experience personal
growth.

Ivan Ilych is dead. The Russian writer, Leo Tolstoy, informs the reader of this tragedy from just the
title of his novella, The Death of Ivan Ilych. Immediately, Tolstoy draws the attention of his audience
with the title. It is a curious title because it tells us the fate of the eponymous character of the story,

The desperate quest for existential meaning put him in distress. He first turned to the Russian
Orthodox Church. However, he found the church and its institutions to be corrupt and voiced against
them, which led to his excommunication. Additionally, he repudiated all the sacraments, all
miracles, the Holy Trinity, the immortality of the soul, and many other tenets of traditional
religion, as Gary Saul Morson, Frances Hooper Professor of the Arts and Humanities in the
Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences, encapsulates in his Encyclopedia Britannica Online article,
Leo Tolstoy (Morson). Tolstoy ultimately found solace in the teachings of Jesus Christ, especially,
in the Sermon on the Mount. He admired Jesus not as a son of God, but, rather, as a sagacious
mortal man. The religious teachings profoundly changed Tolstoy. He dressed in peasant clothing,
rejected his wealth from past works, stripped himself of the title Count, and championed the
doctrine of turning the other cheek . His lifestyle acts as a foil to Ivan Ilych s, a bourgeois who
wastes his life on petty, materialistic
Alcohol Consumption For Male And Female Students Study The...
Legislative changes are aimed at improving New Zealand s drinking culture, to reduce the harm
caused by excessive drinking, however alcohol has become more readily available in more places
over the years (New Zealand Government, 1989, 1999, 2012, 2013). Previous studies have continued
to question whether such changes have made a difference in our drinking culture.
The purpose of this report is to focus on the comparison of alcohol consumption for male/ female
students studying the General and Applied Psychology with the Open Polytechnic of New Zealand,
past or present. This experiment compares male/ female drinking habits and consumption for the last
12 months. It is hypothesised that male and female patterns of alcohol consumption are different, as
past studies have shown that males consume alcohol than females (XXXXXX).
It is important to note that one standard drink is 12.5mls or 10 grams of pure alcohol, or one can or
stubbie of beer, half a large bottle of beer, one small glass of wine or one double nip of spirits. The
recommended amount of standard drinks on one occasion is 6 standard drinks for men, or 4
standard drinks for women.

Music And Its Influence On The Italian Genre
Throughout history, various styles of music have developed to further the evolution and complexity
of music, wether it be commissioned by nobility or, composed for the enjoyment of the normal,
common populace. English madrigals, though not the longest lasting style, is one such form of
music that has had a lasting impact on the continuing composition of music. Madrigals are defined
four ways in A History of Western Music. The fourth definition, English polyphonic work imitating
the Italian genre, is what will be covered in this paper but, to understand this definition, the other
four must be explored. Madrigals originated as a musical style in Italy in the 14th Century, but, the
style came around again in the 16th century (1588 1627), much more popular and extremely more
influential than the previous incarnation of madrigals. Madrigals are songs in a poetic setting, such
as a sonnet, or, another nonrepetative verse form. Madrigals in England developed at the same time
as mass music printing, under William Byrd, although he himself eventually stopped composing
madrigals. In volume 15 of the Second Edition of The Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians, as
to the circumstances of the rise of the madrigal, it states: A favourable literary situation developed in
the 1570s, when Spenser, Sidney and other new poets undertook a comprehensive reform of native
poetry along Italian lines. From here, Musica transalpina was translated by Nicholas Yonge. Musica

Life After Death
What is going to happen to us when we will die? Some people never considered what it could
happen to them after life. For many people, death is a redoubtable event because they do not know
what to expect after their death. However, other persons, such as religious people are conscious of
what to expect after their deathbecause of their beliefs. Each religion has different ideas and
different ways of looking life. Death, therefore, is viewed by different religions in many ways.
Although, different religions have a distinct conception of death, they all have something in
common: they all give hope to people. Among all different religions in the world, four of the most
common ones Catholic, Jewish, Islamic, and Hindu view death in... Show more content on

One source explains that the final day of life every person accounts for what he or she has done in
her life (World Religions index, 3). Every man s actions have we hung around his neck, and on
the last day shall be laid before him a wide open book (3). In addition, for Muslims the divine
decree is Allah. According to Chris Richard, the author of the book World Religions , All the laws
that govern the universe belong to Allah, and He controls the destiny of all things, including the
time and the place of each person s birth and death: all things issue from Allah, whether sweet or
bitter . The rightness will be rewarded with the bliss of Paradise (Richard, 155) . Heaven is
depicted in terms of worldly delights. For instance, who fallowed and accepted Allah s guidance
will be rewarded with the bliss of Paradise. In the contrary, those who refuse to accept and fallow
Allah s guidance in this present life will suffer painful punishment in hell fire.
Therefore, death can be viewed in the Islamic religion. Death can also be viewed in the Hindu
religion. Hindu considers that they have many incarnations ahead of them before they can find final
salvation. There are three main concepts in the Hindu religion: Samsara, Moksha, and Karma. The
concept of Samsara is the belief on the cycle of birth, death, and rebirth. According to Chris Richard,
The universe is also subject to cynical processes of change, from birth to death and
Comparing Power In The Scarlet Pimpernel And The Battle Of...
How many examples of misused power can you come up with? In the Scarlet Pimpernel and the
Battle of Princeton, John Trumbull and Baroness Orczy s use of details communicate that both
courage and power can be too much of a good thing. characters in the Scarlet Pimpernel sometimes
have too much power, and that topples them. Though unseen in the painting, that happens in the
painting , too.
Shown by amazing details, both The Scarlet Pimpernel and the Battle of Princeton include large
amounts of power in vivid, painted ways, and they show that power can be both an advantage and
a disadvantage. The Scarlet Pimpernel shows power in huge amounts in vividly detailing the iron
grip the Third Estate has over the aristos and the rest of the country with the single guillotine that
daily, hourly,... claimed its many victims (Orczy 2). Surprisingly, without detailed violence,Orczy
shows Chauevelin s power over his men, Sir Percy s power over his followers, and their
confrontations without blood or gore. The Battle of Princeton does a great job at communicating
what is happening through details, as well. It clearly shows who is winning, what is going on in the

The Scarlet Pimpernel shows a large amount in Sir Percy s courageous fight against Chauvelin,
though the odds are clearly stacked up against him. He did such a successful job at outsmarting
everyone that even his wife thought that he was stupid. Orczy gives amazing details showing that
Percy had enough courage to play the role of a fool. Also, The Battle of Princeton also shows the
British clearly dominating the Americans in the battle. The red on the coats of the British suggests
violence and terror, while most Americans are missing their coats or are dead, therefore letting the

Hatred Between Israelis and the Palestinians Essay
Hatred Between Israelis and the Palestinians

The fear, suspicion and hatred between the Palestinians and the Israelis are present because of many
causes, both short term and long term. Both the Israelis and the Palestinians believe they have cause
to hate each other.

One of the earliest long term events that contribute to the current hostility is the Deir Yassin
massacre in 1948 9. The Deir Yassin massacre was caused by Operation Dalet, which was launched
by the Haganah, in an attempt to split the Arab states by capturing villages in between Jaffa and
Jerusalem. In the massacre at Deir Yassin, 250 civilians were killed, consisting of men, women and
children. This massacre started the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This caused a conflict between the two groups, which still hasn t been solved, and has caused the
Israelis and the Palestinians to be mistrustful and suspicious towards each other. This feeling of
mistrust and suspicion affected later decisions held by both groups, and no doubt hindered the peace.
This outlook also affected the general attitude of the people, which has made it difficult for them to
accept each other. In the case of the Palestinians, they had refused to accept the fact that Israel was a
state. The Palestinians also grew to resent the Israelis, thinking that they had taken over the
Palestinian land without the consent of the Palestinians living there.

Another long term cause that has contributed to the feeling of fear and hatred for both the Israelis
and the Palestinians is the 1967 Six Day War. The Israelis hatred of the Palestinians and other
Arab states increased mainly because of the propaganda that was released before the war. Many
cartoons were printed in newspapers a month before the war and they all implied that the Arab
states would destroy Israel once the war started, and some suggested that the Israelis would be
expelled from Israel. A few radio broadcasts also said things like this;

It is our chance, Arabs, to direct a blow of death and annihilation to Israel and all its presence in our
Holy Land. (Cairo Radio, Voice of the Arabs , 20 May
A Summary of Modern Practices in Employee Recruitment and...
A summary of modern practices in employee recruitment and selection methods Business revolves
around people. It s the people in the business that run it so therefore it s always important to have the
best employee to do it. That is why selection is such an important aspect of any organisation, small
time or bigger. It is fundamental to the performance of any business or establishment that the
personnel that it employs are competent to fill the role, and enhance the companies overall
performance. Because of the importance of selection, many different methods have been produced
and tested throughout the years, ranging from the low key methods such as applications through to
the most commonly used method today, the interview. The... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Criticisms relating to the candidates have also been posed at Biodata, sometimes reactions of
candidates may not help. Some may react adversely to the questions as there may not be a clear
link between the questions and the job applying for and also there is a possibility that candidates
could predict the answers that the employers want to hear but some data can be checked so that
helps to discourage. So there are a lot of criticisms that are posed at Biodata, it makes you wonder
why this selection method has even increased at all in the last 20 years. That is simply because
there are a lot of potential employees out there in modern times and Biodata is a great way of
filtering out possible bad candidates, it may not give the perfect employee but it almost certainly
roots out the bad ones. The first step in order to get employed would be sending in application
forms or a CV. This is often the first step in any job unless you are approached by the potential
employer personally. Application Forms or CV details are screened against person specifications
to filter. As they are used to sift applications they need to be well designed to minimise the chance
of unwise rejections or inclusions. If the CV impressed the employers then it would be likely an
interview would be arranged. Job Interview is a process in which a

Abstract
The people in the world that we live in are extremely diverse, in terms of the nationalities, religions,
gender classifications and physical abilities. Social workers must have a clear understanding of the
consequences of diversity and difference and the mechanisms of oppression and discrimination as
they relate to human development. The range of different ethnic and cultural backgrounds that social
workers will practice in is huge. Because of this, social workers must have an understanding of the
values and attitudes of a multitude of different cultures as well as an understanding of their own

She was very pleasant, very polite and eager to smile at every appropriate moment.

A True Story
The book I chose to read was 10% Happier How I Tamed The Voice In My Head, Reduced Stress
Without Losing my Edge, And Found Self Help That Actually Works A True Story by Dan
Harris. He is a co anchor on Nightline. His book is about how to control your internal monologue.
We start the book with Harris talking about his early career as a reporter. Harris had started
reporting in Boston for a local cable network. He then later moved to ABC. Once Harris had
arrived at ABC he knew it was a competition to get yourself a good story. After reporting some
stories for ABC he then got selected to report overseas. When he went overseas had to report in
Pakistan, Afghanistan and Iraq. While he was there he would report during drastic such as a combat

The reason for this is because Harris gives instruction on how to meditate. I myself have always
thought it would be generally hard to meditate due to the fact that I believed that I would fall
asleep attempting to meditate. Not only does he teach you how to meditate he make sure to give
advice for a few explanations on why you may not be meditating properly such as it be boring to
do, not being able to focus, pain from positioning yourself. Some of these things where some
problems I had myself with meditation; like my mind would always wonder while trying to
meditate. A way that Harris talks about for you to keep focus while meditating is by thinking of
your body from head to toe starting all the way at your toes and on to your calfs and so on until
you get to the top of your head and then you repeat the same process going back down. He also
mentions to control your breathing but not to primarily think about it. If standard meditation doesn
t work for you Harris suggest two other types of meditation. One type is walking meditation.
Walking meditation is simple to do. All you have to do is set a certain distance in which you
choose to walk and you pace yourself back and forth while focusing on one central point which is
not looking down to your feet. The other form of meditation is compassion meditation. In this style
of meditation you are picturing someone and wishing them good vibes. You generally start with
