Why I Became a Speech Pathologist Essay
If you fail to plan, you plan to fail. I can hear one of my grandmother s highly regarded quotes
resonating inside my head. Apprehension consumed me when I entered college as an undecided
major. Unexpectedly that all changed a few weeks into my first semester. My grandmother had a
stroke which ultimately affected her speech and was in dire need of a Speech Pathologist. This is
what initially sparked my interest in this field. I was determined on working with the geriatric
population because of the experience and attachment I endured with my grandmother. However, the
irrefutable fact that this is my passion became evident when I started working as an Assistant
Teacher at Clarke Schools for Hearing and Speech. At Clarke I currently... Show more content on

While I am learning an abundance of valuable information at Clarke, my background knowledge
derived from my undergraduate studies. I double majored in Speech Pathology and Psychology at
Brooklyn College because I believe they compliment each other well when it comes to the studies
of speech. Different aspects of Psychology including cognitive science, neuroscience, and biology
are essential in understanding speech disorders, language processing, production, acquisition, and
comprehension. In my second year at Brooklyn College, I observed children at a nearby
elementary school for 50 hours. During this time I observed how children at the kindergarten level
interacted with each other. I shadowed the teacher in order to learn different teaching strategies that
will be beneficial and applicable as a Speech Therapist. The opportunity to observe the work
overview of a Speech Pathologist, has tremendously solidified my interest in this field. At the Diana
Rogovin Speech Center at Brooklyn College, I observed clients of various ages with different speech
language disorders including articulation, language, voice, fluency and accent modification.
Observing clinicians at the speech center gave me the opportunity to learn how important client
clinician interaction is for the session and how essential it is to build a good relationship with the
client. Although I learned the
Critical Criticism Of Hester Prynne
Hester Prynne. Not the Heroine.

In the critical essay On the Scarlet Letter , by D.H Lawrence, Lawrence analyzes the character
Hester Prynne from the novel The Scarlet Letter , and how her life is portrayed. According to
Lawrence, Hester is not worthy of the praise she is given by Nathaniel Hawthorne. D.H. Lawrence
uses the techniques of repetition, compact syntax and biblical allusions to effectively convey his
negative attitudes towards Hester Prynne. Lawrence uses the repetition of certain words to drill them
into the reader s mind. The continuous use of the phrase A. Adulteress! throughout the essay
reinforces Hester s sin, and reminds the reader that she is a sinner, rather than someone worthy of
praise (Lawrence). This repetition resembles the physical scarlet letter, in the sense that D.H.
Lawrence is shaming Hester over and over again, similar to how the Puritans shamed Hester
throughout her life. Moreover, the name of the object that was pinned to Hester s breast, The Scarlet
Letter is also repeated throughout Lawrence s essay (Lawrence). By using this phrase, Hester is
reduced to her sin, stripping away all of her good deeds, because the emphasis is placed on her
sinful actions rather than her personal qualities and life after the sin, which does not give the
reader a chance to focus on any positive qualities Hester possesses. In addition, the scarlet letter
holds the negative connotations of sin, punishment and adultery. By repeating Scarlet Letter , the
reader s mind is filled with these negative connotations, thus reiterating Lawrence s opinion that
Hester is the source of evil and her actions should not have been glorified. Lawrence s repetition of
these phrases reinforces Hester s sin and shameful actions, which effectively conveys his dismissive
feelings towards Hester. The use of compact syntax highlights Lawrence s disapproval of Hester
Prynne by abruptly and continuously shooting her down. The concise sentence Adulteress. Alpha.
Abel, Adam. A. America shoots at Hester with negative words (Lawrence). This rapid fire structure
effectively degrades Hester as each word delivers an individual blow to her character and degrades
her, by restating her sin, the letter A which
Liability For Negligence
Introduction
Litigation is becoming more prevalent in all areas of society, including education. Schools are now
the focus of an array of legislation which influences and impacts on the daily professional lives of
teachers. Subsequently, teaching is becoming an increasingly complex profession. The most
prominent legal concern expressed by teachers is their vulnerability to negligence claims, as they
work with those, who in the process of enhancing their physical, intellectual and critical abilities, are
more susceptible to injury.

Negligence is defined as the omission to do something which a reasonable man...would do, or

doing something which a prudent and reasonable man would not do. The general principle is that
one should not harm those to whom they owe a duty of care, by act or omission. Action for
negligence is grounded on the breach of a duty to exercise reasonable care. To be actionable,
negligence must consist of four elements; a duty, breach of the duty, causation and injury. The test
frequently applied by the courts is that of a reasonable person placed in the defendant s
circumstances.

Liability for negligence cannot arise until it has been established that the man who has been
negligent owed some duty to the person who seeks to make him liable for his negligence. Teachers
have a legal duty of care, due to the special characteristics of the teacher pupil relationship to take
reasonable care to ensure that students meet with no foreseeable injury
Compare And Contrast Jonathan Edwards And Sinners In The...
In every aspect of their lives, the goal of the Puritans was to make a society that would be in
every way, connected to God. In Sinner in the Hands of an Angry God by Jonathan Edwards and
The Minister s Black Veil by Nathaniel Hawthorne, the two authors convey Puritan beliefs in two
very different ways. Edwards projects these ideas by putting fear into his people, while Hawthorne
takes a less critical approach to express his Puritanbeliefs. While Hawthorne s style is gloomy and
strange, Jonathan Edwards challenges the reader s understanding of Puritan ideals of religion by
using symbolism, imagery, and details to steer his congregation away from sin and toward God.
Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God and The Minister s Black Veil both use symbolism to
contribute to the impact of Puritanical values on their congregations; however, Edwards utilizes
symbolism more effectively. He uses symbolism to create fear when he says, The bow of God s
wrath is bent, and the arrow made ready on the string, and justice bends the arrow at your heart, and
strains the bow... (paragraph 8). He uses the bow to symbolize God s angerwith the people of
Edwards s congregation by being straightforward with them, while Hawthorne s use of symbolism is
more difficult to comprehend. In contrast, Hawthorne uses symbolism to give the black veil a
greater purpose than it actually has when he explains, It shook with his measured breath, as he gave
out the psalm; it threw its obscurity between him
Hybridity In Garcia Marquez s Of Love And Other Demons
In the novel Of Love and Other Demons, the author uses a few kinds of magic to bring out a few
themes, mainly the themes of love and hybridity.

The author uses Sierva Maria s hair as a magic symbol for love. The novel is framed by a description
of Sierva Maria s hair. Firstly in the introduction, Garcia Marquez sees a stream of living hair the
intense color of copper (pg 6) pouring out of the Santa Clara crypt. In the final line of the novel,
strands of hair gushed like bubbles as they grew back on her shaved head (pg 109). Both usage of
hair as a magic symbol shows Garcia Marquez s use of magical realism. It is unrealistic for hair to
continue living and growing in death, and also for it to grow so quickly and immediately after Sierva

After being bitten by the dog, Sierva Maira is believed to have contracted rabies. While the
Africans consider it quite mundane, the Spaniards read it as purely demonic because of their
belief in the superstition of fearing animals and what relates to animalism inherent in human
beings. Therefore, the issue of being possessed by the demons dramatizes a trepidation. Marquez
paints a vivid picture of the hybridity in the novel that is highlighted by the demonic magic by
portraying the difference in how the blacks and the whites faces this issue. In the novel, the
Bishop sees rabies as a form that the demon may take to enter an innocent body. The superstitious
Abbess to whom Sierva Maria is entrusted finds something supernatural and portentous in every
ordinary event; the fact that she did not notice the girl s presence in her courtyard for several hours
meant to her that the girl must have been rendered invisible by witchcraft. While the servants sat
enchanted (pg 49) by Sierva Maria s singing, the Abbess raised the crucifix she wore around her
neck (pg 49). The use of demonic magic brought on by the bite of the dog thus highlights the
different treatment that is received by Sierva Maria, therefore bringing the reader s focus to the
theme of hybridity in the
Four Manners Of Death
Manners of death are one of the most important factors of an investigation. The four different
manners of death are suicide, homicide, natural, and accidental. The difference in these is if the state
is going to prosecute. Getting this information right during the investigation will keep the right
people behind bars and help families learn to heal. Homicides are the killing of another person. A
homicide is a very serious crime that shocks the community. Even though we are in a rural area,
homicides still happen around us. When investigating a homicide, it is important to look for a murder
instrument. Suicides happen when someone decides to take their own life. Some of the most
common suicides are asphyxia or gunshot wounds to the head. An accidental... Show more content

Some people can die from carbon monoxide poisoning without even knowing because this gas is
odorless. The most usual carbon monoxide death would involve sitting inside the car with a tube
running inside the car from the exhaust system. This seems to be a preferred way to commit
suicide because all the person does is lay down and fall asleep forever. A sign to look for with a
dead body inside a residence if drugs, medical conditions, and trauma are ruled out is cherry read
skin. Although it can be spotted on the skin it is very dangerous to investigate this kind of case.
Often officers will go inside the residence to see the dead body when there could still be a high
content of carbon monoxide in the air. It has been noted that if residence is going to use carbon
monoxide to kill themselves some considerate residence have put up signs letting first responders
know so they are not subject to the poison. If there is no sign left up by the victim officer should be
aware of poison if they get a headache or if they feel

4.6 Investing? [3] Does the following statement make sense in view of the Efficient Markets
Hypothesis (EMH)? The Japanese economy has deep structural problems, which the Japanese seem
reluctant to overcome. We do not see any major change in this situation over the next two to three
years. Hence, we advise against investing in the Tokyo stock market, because we expect returns to
be below average for the next two to three years.

On the Efficient Markets Hypothesis

Solutions
4.1 Interest Rates [2] Remember the first lesson about market efficiency: Markets have no memory.
Just because long term interest rates are high relative to past levels does not mean that they won t
go higher still. Unless you have special information indicating that long term rates are too high,
issuing long term bonds should be a zero NPV transaction. So should issuing short term debt or
common stock. 4.2 Semistrong [3] All of these are public information, you do not expect them to
explain future changes in stock price. Hence, you can not expect to make excess returns using this
information. You can only use private information to generate excess returns. 4.3 UPS [3] Once the
announcement is made and the price has reacted (downward) to the lower (discounted) future
dividend stream, there is no
