For BIM implementation to succeed, it requires

careful planning and a structured, step-by-step
rollout. A structured transition ensures teams can
adapt effectively, minimising disruptions and
maximising the long-term benefits of BIM.

In recent years, an increasing number of construction design

professionals have transitioned to BIM (Building Information Modeling),
with Autodesk Revit as their preferred software. The benefits are clear
- BIM enhances efficiency, collaboration, and organisation compared to
traditional 2D CAD workflows, ultimately boosting productivity and
reducing costs.

While implementing BIM and Revit comes with challenges, a well-

managed transition delivers substantial benefits in both the short and
long term. Below we outline how to approach the transition to Revit as
a phased process.

3
BIM Implementation Phases

Phase 1 : Revit template

The essential first step to working in Revit is to create a Revit template. A good template will
economise your time and streamline your workflow. Developing your template will give your
practice a head start in the production of quality drawing output from Revit, in a structured and
efficient manner.

Phase 2 : BIM standards

Establish your practice’s standards for working in BIM + Revit and document this in reference

manuals. Outlining these best practices guidelines will enable you to maintain BIM standards
across projects and carry out team training efficiently as you transition to Revit.

Your BIM standards should include detailed naming conventions, project and drawing

organisation, protocols for auditing, maintaining and sharing your model, and best practices
guidelines for working in BIM.

4
Phase 3 : Team Training
Training your team is one of the biggest challenges in transitioning to Revit. It is essential to make
sure your team is familiar with the fundamentals of working in Revit as well as your practice
specific Revit template and BIM standards, before they embark on a project.

To ensure that everyone’s skills are up to scratch, the team can practice and develop their skills in
the early stages of their training by working on practice models to start. Teams should establish a
a “BIM lead” or member of the team that is skilled in Revit who can oversee the project to ensure
BIM standards are being followed and that the model is regularly audited.

Phase 4 : Live Project Set-up

The final step is to build a current live project into a fully BIM enabled model by using your Revit
template and BIM standards. Use the live model as a tool for practical, hands-on Revit training for
team members who have already established a base knowledge in Revit.

□ Define BIM Goals

Define your BIM goals for the practice. These goals should be aligned with the overall business
objectives of the practice and should be specific, measurable and time-bound. Consider the
following questions:
Are you looking for a phased implementation or a complete transition at once?
What are your main goals for implementing Revit e.g., improving efficiency, enhancing
collaboration, better design visualisation?
Have you defined your budget for the implementation process?

□ Define BIM Implementation Budget

When implementing Revit, budget considerations should include the following:

Software licensing costs - subscription fees for Revit and related Autodesk products

Hardware upgrades - ensuring workstations meet performance requirements for Revit

Training expenses - workshops, online courses, or in-house training for staff

Additionally, consider BIM implementation consulting to streamline workflows, content library

development for custom families and templates, and collaboration tools (such as BIM 360 for
cloud-based teamwork). Hidden costs like workflow adjustments, potential productivity dips
during the transition, and ongoing support or plugin costs should also be factored into the budget
to ensure a smooth and efficient adoption of Revit.

6
□ Implement BIM software

Implement the BIM software that aligns with the BIM goals of the practice. Consider if the full

version of Revit is required for your practice or if Revit LT could be used as a cheaper alternative
or as a stepping stone to the full version of Revit. Consider how you or your team currently works
on projects and how you coordinate with other design disciplines.

Revit LT
Revit LT is a streamlined alternative to Revit that includes all the necessary capabilities for
architects. It is far more cost effective and has been developed to help smaller practices to
transition to using BIM. Revit LT is best suited to students, freelance architects, sole traders and
small architecture practices working on small scale or domestic projects. Revit LT only allows one
user to work on a model at any one time.

Revit

The full version of Revit allows multiple users to work on a project at any one time through a
process of 'work-sharing'. In other words, several users can have the same model open, there is a
central model and updated work is synchronised from each users local file. For larger projects it is
important that two or more team members can work on the same file at once from the office or
cloud based server.

Template Development
www.projectbyn.com

The essential first step to working in Revit is to

develop your Revit template. A good Revit
template will economise your time and
streamline your workflow.

Your template should be specifically developed for the needs of your

practice and should reflect the graphic style of your architecture studio.
A well-developed template helps organise your drawings, sheets and
views to navigate the complex Revit browser with greater ease. The
template can be fully set up with custom settings, parameters and
ready-to-use drafting elements to create beautiful, quality architectural
drawings in a consistent graphic style.

How to Create a Revit Template

How to create a Revit Template ?

1. Build it from Scratch

Creating a Revit template from scratch gives you full control over standards, settings, and families
tailored to your firm’s workflow. Although time-intensive, it ensures that the template aligns
perfectly with your drawing quality, annotation styles, office standards, and project needs.

Starting Point: Revit provides a default Architectural Template, which includes basic settings,
but its annotation styles, line weights, and family libraries may not meet professional
documentation standards.

Customisation Process:
Define project units, view templates, sheets, schedules, and phases.
Set up line weights, hatches, and dimension styles for consistency.
Create a standardised title block with your firm’s branding.
Pre-load commonly used families (e.g., doors, windows) to avoid repetitive work.
Configure worksharing settings for team collaboration.

Pros: Maximum flexibility and tailored workflow.

Cons: Requires expertise, time, and testing to refine.

9
2. Purchase a Ready-Made Template

If time and expertise are constraints, a ready-made Revit template can be a quick and cost-
effective solution. These templates are available for purchase, often developed by industry

experts, and can be customised to fit your needs.

What’s Included?
Pre-configured sheets, view templates, annotation styles, and title blocks.
Standard families and schedules commonly used in architectural projects.
Optimised line weights, object styles, and graphic settings for professional output.

Customisation Options: Ready-made templates allow you to tweak settings, update title
blocks, and adapt schedules to match your firm’s branding and documentation standards.

Pros: Saves time and provides a solid starting point.

Cons: May still require customisation to match your specific workflow.

3. Commission a Custom-Built Template

For firms looking for a tailor-made solution without investing internal time and effort, outsourcing
the template creation to a BIM service provider is an option.

Process:
The provider consults with your firm to understand your standards, workflows, and
deliverables.
They create a template incorporating your branding, documentation styles, and modeling
preferences.
The final template is delivered fully optimised for your practice, ensuring efficiency and
consistency.

Best for:
Large firms with complex project requirements.
Practices that want to standardise outputs across teams and projects.
Firms without in-house Revit experts to build a template.

Pros: Saves time, ensures quality, and is built specifically for your needs.

Cons: Higher initial cost, and future updates may require external support.

Develop BIM Standards
www.projectbyn.com

Documenting your BIM Standards, Protocols and

Workflows will enable you to maintain BIM
standards across projects and carry out team
training efficiently as you transition to Revit.

Develop BIM standards that define the best practices for the use of
BIM and document these in reference manuals. These standards
should cover topics such as naming conventions, file organisation, and
data exchange. Establish BIM protocols that outline the procedures for
the use of BIM within your business. These protocols should cover
topics such as file sharing, model reviews, and model maintenance.

Your BIM standards should include details on your practices custom

template, naming conventions, best practices for working in BIM,
auditing and maintaining your model and how drawings should be
organised and catagorised.
