Introduction
In a building construction and in algebra it is always good to have a strong foundation.
The same way that a building needs a strong foundation for it to be able to cope with natural
disasters or anything that might bring it down, algebra depends on basic concepts that support
more complex mathematical operations and real-world applications. Knowledge of these key
elements in algebra is vital since they act as foundations upon which other concepts are
developed.
Mastering Basic Operations
Algebra, being a branch of mathematics, cannot be fully understood without first
grasping how basic operations, such as addition, subtraction, multiplication and division work.
These operations are important as they appear in almost all algebraic expression and equations.
For instance, to solve expressions like 3 x+ 2 x−5 , basic operations like addition, subtractions
and multiplication or division are essential. Some students have indicated that they encounter
challenges completing the basic operations, and this affects their accuracy when solving other
algebraic computations (Pramesti & Retnawati, 2019). Therefore, these operations should be
mastered to provide students with the necessary background in algebra.
Understanding Variables
Another key concept of algebra is the comprehension of variables. A variable is a type of
symbol that stands for numbers in equations and expressions and is used to generalize
mathematical concepts. For instance, in the expression 2 x+3=7 , the symbol x stands for an
unknown value that needs to be determined. This concept of variables is essential because it
forms a basis towards the understanding of other concepts in mathematics including functions,
graphing and other advanced concepts like calculus (Thompson & Harel, 2021).
Grasping the Order of Operations
Another concept is the order of operations, which is also important for students to master
as well. The sequence of solving an expression is governed by a certain acronym known as
PEMDAS which stands for Parentheses, Exponents, Multiplication/Division then
Addition/Subtraction. For instance, in the expression 3+ 4 ×22 they would have to remember that
the exponent comes first and hence 22=4, then the multiplication 4 × 4 before finally performing
the addition of 3 to arrive at 16. Adhering to the order of operation is crucial, as this helps to
eliminate mistakes when solving arithmetic equations and various algebra problems (Pramesti &
Retnawati, 2019).
Solving Equations and Inequalities
Equations and inequalities are also other fundamental areas within algebra. An equation
is a statement that asserts that two expressions are equal and solving it simply means finding the
value that will make the statement correct. For instance, when solving an equation like 5x+2=12
one is required to apply inverse operations to get the value of x. Likewise, inequalities include
identification of values satisfy a given condition, such as 3 x−7>2 . Mastery of these concepts is
essential for the progression to more advanced topics, like systems of equations and quadratic
functions (Osei, 2020).
The Importance of Foundational Concepts
Students should gain adequate understanding of these concepts because they help form
the basis of solving tough problems in algebra and other areas. Algebra doesn’t only teach
students how to solve equations, but also enhances the ability of logical thinking and problem
solving in other related aspects, like finance and engineering. If these concepts are not
                                                                                                  3
understood, the students may find it difficult to understand future mathematical courses and their
practical applications.
Conclusion
In the same way as a building has to have a stable base to stand, students can only
progress in mathematics if they have a good foundation in basic algebra. In mastering basic
operations, variables, the order of operations and equations and inequalities prepares students for
future academic coursework and real-world scenarios. Therefore, it is important to stay
consistent and review these these foundational skills to ensure a smooth transition to more
complex mathematical challenges.
