The Fight Or Flight Response
One of the oldest forms of survival is the fight or flight response. Numerous examples of
outrageous feats performed by people can be found, but the most pure form can be found in those
who still use it daily, and actually use it for survival. Animals utilize their fight or flight response to
survive in nature, where a delay or lapse in judgement could result in their death.
The fight or flight response is a complex response that affects a great deal of the body. Initially, a
signal travels to the brain, to which the amygdala responds. The amygdala sends a nerve impulse to
the hypothalamus, which sends a chemical signal to the pituitary gland. The pituitary gland then
releases a hormone that travels to the adrenal gland, along with the nerve impulse from the
hypothalamus. Within the adrenal gland, the impulse initiates the release of epinephrine and
adrenaline, which affect various cell types. Inside the adrenal gland, the adrenal cells are affected by
the presence of the hormone and activate the G protein complex. This complex stimulates adenylate
cyclase, which converts ATP into cAMP. cAMP activates the protein Kinase A, or PKA, which
releases catalytic subunits. These subunits travel to the mitochondrial membrane and activate the
steroidogenic acute regulatory protein. This protein mediates importing cholesterol into the
mitochondria, which uses enzymes to convert the cholesterol into 17 OH pregnenolone. The
pregnenolone is then released to the endoplasmic reticulum,
Descriptive Essay On The Devil
The devil I feared, sat on my lungs so deeply it felt impossible to breath. My knees were trembling
and I could not move. A single tear drop got away from me as it broke the dam wall in my soul. I
just stood there at the edge of the steps, as I watched her slip away to another man with nothing I
could do. 5 sets of eyes watching, joining me in shock. I turned into a completely empty shell as I
stared at the entrance to the Vermeer s house where I kept replaying the recent events through my
head. The house that used to be so full and grand, now seemed so empty to me. I contemplated
why she rejected my proposal and then it appeared clear to me that she lied about wearing those
blue and yellow head clothes so what else had she lied to me about. I had a slight suspicion that she
was to have feelings for the man in the attic, but I thoughtI had pushed that away with my love and
affection. Clearly I was wrong. I felt my strength regain as my sadness turned to anger. My eyes
gazed up at the attack to see him, standing at the window staringdown at me, he too looking
shocked, though much more still than everyone else. How could she do this? With a flood of
hopelessness and anger I turned away from the Vermeer s house and fled like mist before a radiant
day.

I steamed through the market place towards the pub. I couldn t stop the thoughts rushing around in
my head. All sorts of emotions kept stirring up and I didn t know how to feel. Anger, hate, betrayal
or love? I didn t know if
Women Across Cultures Face Similar Forms Of Oppression
Women across cultures face similar forms of oppression in varying ways. The stories of Maxine
Hong Kingston, Nicholas D. Kristof, Sheryl WuDunn, Banana Yoshimoto, and Chimamanda Ngozi
Adichie bring awareness to these heartbreaking yet inspiring narratives of the lives of women
outside of North America. While some of the works are fictional, there is still an air of realism that
accentuates the general ideas conveyed in the individual narratives. Themes such as tradition,
assimilation, racism, classism, education, and point of view in story telling are present throughout
these books. This allows readers to understand different systems of oppression on a global scale and
can possibly inspire a form of altruism that can lead to philanthropic... Show more content on

Everything traditional in Kingston s family were not acceptable in the United States. This presented a
unique obstacle to Kingston and her family, having to preserve a culture while assimilating to
another culture. Kingston s mother, Brave Orchid, constantly used the term ghost. In reference to
humans, she used the term to represent difference in a negative light. Often times, the American
citizens were behaving in a way that was in opposition to her culture. On page 107, Brave
expressed her desire to have all of her children and their families together at home and not be
wandering ghosts. Perhaps, she is referring to the cultural differences between China and America.
Whereas American culture is more individualistic, Chinese culture is more so collectivistic.
Kingston detailed how her mother cut a part of her tongue. Initially, she believed that her mother
did so to prevent her tongue from being ready. In Chinese culture, it is said that a ready tongue is
an evil (Kingston, 1989, p. 164). However, when her and Brave discussed the matter, Brave stated
that she cut her tongue so that she is able to easily speak other languages. Kingston was confused
about why her mother would be contradictory to the age old saying. Brave explained that things
operated in a different manner in the United States. Again, she referred to the country as ghost to
indicate a difference. On the
Gm Avtovaz Essay
Introduction
GM and Avto VAZ were sitting down to finally negotiate a deal that they had originally committed
to in 1999, to jointly build and sell Chevrolets in the Russian market. This car market was expected
to account for a significant share of global growth over the next decade. GM felt pressure to jump
on board or miss the opportunity. Other auto makers were already on the move. Ford, Fiat and
Daewoo were already exploring their own opportunities in Russian and GM did not want to be left
out in the cold. However, things were not going to be easy due to a weak economy, turbulent car
market, legal problems of Avto VAZ related to tax evasion, the fact that Avto VAS was horribly
inefficient at building cars, and a divided showing ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The clarity of ownership was like trying to figure out how many licks it takes to get to the center of
a tootsie pop! However, this wasn t just unique to just Avto VAZ, unclear ownership was a common
problem among Russian companies. This problem contributed directly to their difficulty in securing
foreign investments in Russia, just imagine who would feel comfortable investing, when they aren t
sure what or who they are really investing in?!? After taking a closer look at Avto VAZ it looks like
two different management groups controls the majority of their shares, AVVA (All Russian
Automobile Alliance) 32.35% of shares and AFC (Automobile Finance Company) 19.19% of
shares, OAO Russian Invest 5.45% of shares and ZAO Depository Center 5.05% and the rest of
the shares widely held. Then it only gets complicated from there, Avto VAZ owned an 80.8
interest in AVVA, and it appears AVVA was also someway controlled or influenced by Boris
Berezovsky one of Russia s most high profile oligarchs. It would appear however that Avto VAZ
owned themselves and were involved in a partnership with Berezovsky which was set up to heavily
benefit Berezovsky and not AvtoVAZ? It would appear so. He was set up with a distributor who
didn t have to pay until much later than the inventory moved and collected their own payment
directly from the customers. Logo VAZ, would become one of Russia s largest auto importers and
Berezovsky would become extremely
Anthrax and Bioterrorism Essay
According to Willey, Sherwood, and Woolverton, anthrax is a highly infectious animal disease,
caused by the bacterium B. antrhacis, that can be transmitted to humans by direct contact with
infected animals, such as cattle, goats, sheep, etc., or their products, especially hides, and its spores
can remain viable in soil and animal products for decades. Therefore, it is more likely to be
transmitted to those humans continuously in contact with such animals or areas in which infected
animals have had contact, even if it was years ago. It can also be transmitted to other animals that
may be feeding or living with infected animals or in the infected areas. There are three main types of
infections caused by the spores of this bacterium:... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The bacterium binds EF and LF and is engulfed by the plasma membrane and carried to an
endosome, which is pierced, allowing EF and LF to enter the cytoplasm. Toxin activity then results in
fluid release, which causes an edema. As these macrophages continue to die, they release their
lysosomal contents, leading to fever, internal bleeding, septic shock, and rapid death (Willey,
Sherwood, Woolverton, p 485). Common preventions and control of anthrax is to receive a
vaccination, which was originally thought of by Pasteur, or to vaccinate the animals likely to obtain
the disease.
Moreover, when one thinks of terrorist attacks, the first things he/she may think of are crashing
planes, nuclear missiles, and bombs. He/she may not, however, think of using microorganisms, such
as anthrax, to start a biological warfare. In the United States the incidence of naturally acquired
anthrax is extremely rare i.e, 1 to 2 cases of cutaneous disease per year. In the year 2001 intentional
contamination lead to 22 cases of anthrax (11 cutaneous, 11 inhalational) in the United States.
Therefore, the spores of Bacillus anthracis are found to be a chosen weapon of bioterrorism
(Saraswathi, Padmavathy, Mamatha, et al, p 2044). B. anthracis was placed in postal letters, where
they would be released
Retail Security Is A Set Of Practices Employed By Retail
Retail Security is a set of practices employed by retail companies to prevent the mishaps of theft,
shop lifting, burglary and any bodily harm done to a human being or damage done to a standing
structure. Retail security is a growing business on top of the business that they are protecting. This
is called the prevention of retail loss and to protect the profit of the business. The number one goal
of retail securityis to protect and defend the company, plus the civilians that come into these
businesses. Retail security is basically a form of law enforcement. Now Private security works
along the same basis as private security but to a higher extent. Types of private security would be an
alarm company such as ADT or Brinks, secret service... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Retail organizations will almost always, by organizational necessity, promote profit making as its
main security and financial concern, in contrast to the federal government s desire to protect the
integrity of the nation over profit making. Industrial organizations and service based industries from
hospitals to schools may fall in between these two security concerns, hoping to both protect the
public, protect and screen employees, and also for instance, industrial organizations, when engaging
in internal investigations into employee conduct, usually decide such behavior merits investigation
when it is against company and also against government policy, such as in regards to sexual
harassment law that violate other employee s sense of personal integrity. Companies do not wish to
be found legally in violation of such statutes. Employee policy is thus subject to discipline as
defined in employers codes of conduct. Transgressing policy may also be defined in collective
bargaining agreements within corporate as well as within public legal structures.(Taylor Francis
pp.228)
Most security and protection systems emphasize certain hazards more than others. In a retail store,
for example, the principal security concerns are shoplifting and employee dishonesty pilferage,
embezzlement, and fraud. A typical set of
Business Observation
Introduction
The organization that I chose to do the consultation report on was the Matador Mercado. It is part
of The University Corporation which is what runs most of the services on campus. There are
several Matador Mercado s on campus there is one in Housing, Sierra Center, Matador BookStore
Complex, and the University Student Union. They each have their own manager, and the one I
chose was the one located in the Matador Bookstore Complex. The manager of this matador
mercado is also the manager of the juice it up next door. The Matador Mercado is a convenience
store that sells items that can be eaten on the go. Some of the items include packed sandwiches,
snacks, salads, and self service hot and cold beverages. Its hours of operation are ... Show more

The employees get trained well enough where they feel confident that they can perform the tasks
required of them, meaning they were trained well and were well informed. One of the employees
was a shift supervisor and the other a regular employee, I believe that there was disagreement in
whether there was performance monitoring because the regular employee always feels that
whatever he or she does is being monitored. What I found strange was that the question if the
supervisor was present during the task was marked NO for both of the employees. I would have
assumed that the regular employee would have marked yes but I can only assume that they believed
the question meant the manager the person who supervises every employee.
Hypothetical Intervention
If I were to intervene on employees not giving customer greetings I would make it so that the door
would have a sound when opened. Like what some stores have that when someone enters a ding
sound is heard. That will alert the employee that a customer has entered. Another method could be
getting the manager to deliver performance feedback in regards to the greetings in an effort to
make the employees more aware that they need to do a better job at it. Preferably in a group, like
mentioned in class to not alienate a person.
Christopher Columbus History
This history of Mistreatment can be traced as far back as 1492 to Christopher Columbus. The true
importance and history of Christopher Columbus is highly debated and is often misconstrued by the
bias of textbooks writers. As students, most of us were taught the rhyme in 1492 Columbus sailed
the ocean blue . Columbus was portrayed as one of the first American hero s in our classrooms
without question. Many of us can clearly recall Columbus Day celebrations in which students made
arts and craft and sang songs about this hero by the name of Christopher Columbus. There is a much
darker side to Columbuses exploration of the Americas that textbooks and teachers tend to leave out
or fill with twisted recollection of events with rosy retrospection... Show more content on

This treaty ensured that there would be peace between the settlers and the Wampanoag s tribe. This
event is important to history of Native Americans because it was one of the first peace treaties
between colonists and Native Americans. Following the treaty there were 12 peaceful years in the
Virginia area between colonists and Native Americans but eventually a conflict by the name of the
Powhatan Wars broke out and left a large amount of both natives and colonists dead. This conflict
lasted from 1622 to around 1644. During this time in 1626 a colonist acquires Manhattan island
from Native Americans for the tiny amount of modern day equivalent of about $24 and renames the
island to New Amsterdam. During the Powhatan Wars, another war broke out between colonists and
natives called the Pequot War which took place in modern day Connecticut and areas of Rhode
Island. The conflict ended with the killing of about 700 natives and the remaining population were
sold into slavery in Bermuda.
Between the years 1689 to 1697 the biggest conflict at the time between native Americans and
colonists called the King Philip s War occurs in New England between colonists and Native
Americans because of tensions over colonist s activities attempting to expand on to native land. The
war took place in Connecticut and Massachusetts and eventually spread to the Plymouth and Rhode
Island colonies, the war ended up taking the lives of an estimated 600 English colonials and around
3,000 Native Americans lives including women and children on both
