An Occurrence At Owl Creek Bridge Essay
In the short story, An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge, by the Realist author, Ambrose Bierce,
claimed to prefer the representative rather than the extraordinary a face of life that is generally
untrue. For example, the details throughout the story sight proved that the author had witnessed the
situation and had his story to truthfully tell, He was a captain. A sentinel at each end of the bridge
stood with his rifle in the position known as support, that is to say, vertical in front of the left
shoulder, the hammer resting on the forearm, thrown straight across the chest a formal and unnatural
position, enforcing an erect carriage of the body (457) He did not express his opinion on the topic
itself, but only explained the situation specifically... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
From this state, he was awakened ages later it seemed to him by the pain of a sharp pressure upon
his throat [...] (458) In a hypocritical way, Realist authors got the reader s hopes up by insisting
on one circumstance while foreshadowing the character s death through an unconscious state as
if he had already passed. Realism indicated an acknowledgment of facts instead of assumptions
and took advantage of this time to show accurate descriptions of American history. In The Ledge,
by Lawrence sargent Hall, he claimed that Naturalism was expressed through his use of detached
style of narration, accuracy of detail, and individuals being controlled by society. If the story
were from a personal perspective, situations throughout it would be perceived in a different and
more biased way, Is it time to shoot now? asked his nephew. Pretty soon, he said. As if he were
putting off making good on a promise. Not yet. His own boy cried softly for a brief moment, like
a man, his face averted in an effort neither to give or show pain. Before school starts, the fisherman
said, wonderfully detached, we ll go to town and I ll buy you boys anything you want. With great
difficulty, in a dull tone as
The Warfare During The American Civil War
The conduct of warfare during the American Civil War best exemplified one characteristic of the
Western way of war, which without its incorporation could have drastically changed the outcome of
the war and the existence of the United States as we know it. This characteristic demonstrated is
innovation. Innovation as a characteristic of the Western way of war best exemplifies the American
Civil Warbased on the telegraph, the rifled musketand the railroad. Had the Union and United States
government not leveraged the above mentioned technologies the outcome of the war could have
resulted in the division of this country. From the onset of the Civil War the South possessed two
advantages. One was geography and the other was that it did not have to win the war. The vastness
of the United State presented command and control challenges and logistical challenge for both
Union and Confederal forces. This before mentioned challenge played into the Confederate forces
other advantage which was they could simple keep the Union forces to a draw during the war and
thus ensuring their future as an independent country. For the Union forces to overcome the
challenge of geography and to not result in a draw they used innovations such as the telegraph to
communicate orders to Soldiers over vast distances and thus making geography and the tyranny of
distance a less of an advantage for the Confederate forces. The ability for leadership to convey
timely orders to their military
A Search Warrant For Criminal Activity
A search warrant is a signed order by a judge/magistrate that authorizes the police to search
specific locations in order to seize specified items during a specific time frame. The searches are
typically intended to search locations seize evidence in relation to probable cause that the suspects
are engaged in criminal activity, are about to engage in criminal activity or had engaged in criminal
activity. The concept for search warrants originates from the 4th Amendment which states The right
of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable
searches and seizures, shall not be violated; and no Warrants shall issue but upon probable cause,
supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the
persons or things to be seized. The Fourth Amendment can be broken down into two sections. The
first section is considered the reasonableness clause where it states that unreasonable searches and
seizures are prohibited. The next section is the warrant clause which specifies the requirements and
limits of searches and seizures. Through these clauses, the 4th Amendment is designed to protect
the people from unreasonable searches and seizures. In order to obtain a search warrant, the police
must show probable cause that a crime was committed and that evidence of that crime is likely to
exist at the specified location. The police typically present their application for a search warrant to a

Leonardo Da Vinci And The Renaissance
Roughly between the times of the 14th and 17th centuries a cultural movement called the
Renaissance existed. The Renaissance housed some of the greatest intellects, such as Leonardo da
Vinci, and a radically different way of thinking emerged. Humanism developed largely and rapidly
among this time, and was greatly influenced by a man named Desiderius Erasmus (1466 1536).
Erasmus, a Dutchman, originally lived among monasteries where he developed many opposing
views during his years of service. In the midst of the Renaissance, around the 16th century, the
Reformation movement began to splinter the faiths of Europe. Some say that Erasmus bridged the
ideals of the Renaissance and Reformation movements. Among his many contributions to the
humanist drive, he wrote many colloquies originally intended for teaching Latin to school children,
which doubled as underlying preaching of Erasmus s ideals. A collection of a variety of these stories
entitled the Ten Colloquies written by Erasmus shows specific examples of the tethering of
Renaissance to the Reformation largely on the theme of ad fontes.
One of Erasmus known standards was the importance of going back to the sources. During the
Renaissance, born in Florence, this was very common thought, as it was a period of admiration of
early Greek and Roman culture, intellect, and art. This began to pave some of the ways of many
reformers mainly as they begin to question the practices of the Catholic Church. Many began to
question where
The Organizational Culture Of The Lincoln Electric Company
After analyzing the story of Lincoln Electric Company I ve come to the Conclusion that their
organizational culture they practicing is People oriented culture. Because the company values
fairness, supportiveness and they respect individual rights. There is a greater emphasis on
expectation of treating people with respect and dignity.
All the founders of the company had a great deal of continues influence on the positioning of the
company today, form John C. Lincoln to James F. Lincoln. John C. Lincoln started it all and James
F. Lincoln, who is the younger brother of John, took over the company to another level. One of
James Lincoln s early actions as head of the firm was to ask the employees to elect representatives
to a committee that would advise him on company operations. The Advisory Board has met with the
chief executive officer twice monthly since that time. This was only the first of a series of innovative
personnel policies that have, over the years, distinguished Lincoln Electric from its contemporaries.
The Lincoln Electric Employees Association was formed in 1919 to provide health benefits and
social activities. This organization continues today and has assumed several additional functions
over the years. By 1923, a piecework pay system was in effect, employees got two week paid
vacations each year, and wages were adjusted for changes in the Consumer Price Index.
Approximately 30 percent of
Lincoln s stock was set aside for key employees in 1914 when James
Comparing The Israelites And The Puritans
The Puritans believe they are morally superior to everyone else. The Puritans are about to leave
England. They are Israelites is what they are. They are fleeing Egypt. Good Riddance! Next stop,
land of milk/honey(4). Vowell uses a simile to compare the Puritans to the Israelites in order to
reveal how the Puritans consider themselves. The Old Testament Israelites, references specifically
the Israelites that escaped from Egypt in the Book of Exodus. After the population of Jews in
Egypt had become so numerous the Pharaoh feared what they might be able to do and put them into
slavery. The Israelites eventually escaped Egypt by crossing the Red Sea and eventually make it to
land God had gifted them, the land of Canaan. The Puritans compare to the Israelites because they
too felt some religious persecution. Catholic rulers like Mary I persecuted Protestants and had many
executed. The Puritans also flee from a land not as pure as themselves in order to start anew. Cotton
himself tells the Puritans that they are God s chosen, and America is their Canaan. The Israelites
inspire the Puritans to get away. The Old Testament Israelites are to the Puritans what the blueswas to
the Rolling Stones a source of inspiration, a renewable resource of riffs(2). Vowell uses an analogy
to compare two unlike things like Puritans and the Rolling Stones. The blues is a genre of music
originating in the Deep South of the United States around the end of the 19th century. The emotion

competition
The intense level of competition in the area of deposit business remained evident in 2007. The
segment s deposit volume worldwide at 31 December
2007 amounted to euro 5,732 million and therefore
0.8 % lower than the figure recorded one year earlier. The main success factors for investment fund
business were the exclusive certificates introduced in the previous year and the new fund of funds
product concept Comfort Invest . The unabated trend towards private old age pension arrangements
by making regular transfers to investment funds also had a positive impact. In order to meet the
growing advisory needs of customers, the range of services on offer in Germany was expanded
accordingly, including the opportunity for customers to obtain investment advice by telephone.
By the year end, the number of customer deposit accounts had increased by 6.0 % to 31,801.
