Essay about Clara Barton
Clara Barton
Introduction
Fondly referred to as the angel of the battlefield (The Encyclopedia Britannica Online), Clara Barton
served as one of the greatest humanitarians this country has ever known. Persistent beyond belief,
Clara employed her remarkable interpersonal skills to teach unruly school children, to collect
supplies to send to the battlefront, and to struggle to form the American Red Cross. An equal rights
advocate, her most memorable successes consisted of improvements in education, foreign aid, and
blacks and women s rights. This American heroine, whose efforts and bravery have become
legendary, worked diligently to reach her ideal: creating the vigilant social conscience which alone
can safeguard individual ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Since her mother paid her little attention and her brothers and sisters were older and had different
interests, Clara often felt ignored or overly childish in this grownup family. In fact, her childhood
became a series of repeated attempts to express her own needs and proclivities, to shake off
dependence, and to overcome the neglect and ridicule she felt were so often her lot (Pryor 1987.
p,10).
Only at school where her unusual intellectual abilities allowed her to stand out did Clara believe she
received sufficient attention. After shocking her teacher by correctly spelling artichoke on the first
day of school (Pryor 1987), she went on to impress her teachers with her eagerness to learn the
reading, writing and arithmetic which the school stressed.
In her twenties Clara decided to expand her education further by attending the Clinton Liberal
institute for higher learning. There she studied analytic geometry, calculus, astronomy, mathematics
and natural science in addition to French, German, ancient history, philosophy and religion (Pryor
1987). With her highly atypical education for a woman of that time, Clara continued the close pupil
teacher relationships she had enjoyed in her earlier schooling.
Influential Relationships
As mentioned, Clara s family exerted a tremendous impact on her. Her siblings educated her both
formally and informally, and her male cousins served as her

The Future of Game Design
In the year 2000 my parents brought home the very first Playstation, by that time it was already
five years old but it was still the most advanced gaming system of its time. When I was five years
of age my parents must have agreed that I had proved myself worthy to begin spending outrageous
hours intensely gaming because that is exactly what happened the same day. A love for video games
developed that day I stuck the controller in my hands and since then I have traveled through many
worlds defeating the darkest of enemies; playstation and I are both 20 years old now. Multiple times
throughout my intense battles I had been told that my obsession ... Show more content on

Knowing that women are not accepted in many male prominent fields today and are often
verbally and physically discouraged from pursuing these careers made me skeptical but also
encouraged me to look into why women aren t joining these fields more. As discouraged as some
of these battles growing up had made me feel I wanted to search further into my future career.
Why is it that women are practically shunned from joining certain fields? It seems to me that this
is due to a bigger picture; women and the act of being feminine has been oppressed in society for
thousands of years in different cultures all over the world. We proudly boast that much of our
society was developed from the ideas of the incredibly intelligent Ancient Greeks. I had thought as
advanced as they were for their time that they would fully welcome women into a variety of societal
roles but even the famous philosopher Aristotle had said The male is by nature superior and the
female inferior...the one rules and the other is ruled. (Canadian Museum). We fail to acknowledge
that even women in Ancient Greek society were just as shunned from societal influence as I feel
we are today. Our society tends to set specific guidelines as to how a gender can act and these
guidelines have been engrained in almost everything we do or see. Our society has been adopting a
patriarch mentality for hundreds of years now and women were not allowed to
Behavioural Perspective
Behavioral, Humanistic, and Cognitive are a few of the many perspective approaches in psychology.
These perspectives produce different strategies to help Jake with his diagnosis of anxiety. One
focuses on the surrounding environment, the other on self actualization, and lastly the way an
individual thinks.
Behavioral perspective is based on learning through rewards, punishments, and observations. This
was based on earlier work of Watson and eventually late B.F Skinner (Ciccarelli White, 2015). An
example of behavioral was given in the book and stated that when a child cries and is rewarded
by getting attention the baby will eventually cry in the future (Ciccarelli White, 2015). The baby
will learn that performing that mechanism will get itself to earn a reward. In Jakes case I might
assume that he is overwhelmed by his classes maybe due to the fact that he feels unprepared for
them. A psychologist may give him advice to prepare for the classes ahead of time to help him build
up his confidence in knowing the material. By doing so he will be able to feel less stressed out in
class and will likely get good grades if he learns the material thoroughly. So, preparing ahead of time
will allow him to get rewarded ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Behavioral psychologists would recommend that Jake change his environment and surround
himself with people that are also looking to be successful in the class he is in. For example,
getting together with fellow classmates to create a study group or inquiring about tutors.
Humanistic psychologists would try to use empathy to help Jake realize that if he sets his mind to
something he is able to accomplish it as long as he believes in himself. Last but not least, a
cognitive psychologist would try to evaluate Jakes thoughts that make an impact on his emotions and
help him think positively. In the end all of these approaches will be successful in helping Jake with

Analysis Of The Poem Southern Gothic
Devan Gilbert

Southern Gothic Literature In the 19th century, the Southern Gothic genre quickly became popular
after Edgar Allen Poe poems in the 18th century. Most writings were formed around the Civil War
era, which plays an enormous part in the tone and setting in Southern Gothic writing styles. (O
Connell 63) Southern Gothic writing elements consist of horror, romance and psychological and
domestic dramas (63). The setting of Southern Gothic was always dingy and dark which explains
the tone of most southern states at this time. Southern Gothic writing styles were known to be
grotesque, violent and gloomy with dark psychological twists that were to be carried on into the
20th century. There can also be other ways to exercise Southern Gothic styles like including strange
events, paranormal elements and representing history in an almost comical approach. (63) There
are some authors who have written very influential Southern Gothic style literature, such as A Rose
for Emily by William Faulkner, A Good Man is Hard to Find and Good Country People by
Flannery O Conner. The father of Southern Gothic literature is William Faulkner, he is the most
significant Southern Gothic writer with his most popular publishing A Rose for Emily. He
beautifully portrays the Southern Gothic style with a morbid fictional story about Emily Grierson.
Emily lost her father and was living alone in a large house in a classy neighborhood, which she felt
Value of a Dystopia Essay
A perfect world with no negative aspects can be defined as a utopia. A utopia consists of having
all the required or desirable elements of life that one has in mind. Everyone has an altered
perception on what a utopia is, but in order for the world to be a utopia a universal definition is
vital. Some elements to be considered in a utopiainclude a society that is stable socially, morally,
politically, and economically. The more a world is in deficient to these key elements of a utopia,
the farther the world travels from the parameters of a utopia. Through the analysis of the novel
Lord of the Flies , the movies Lord of the Flies , V for Vendetta , and Gattaca and the song Green

When the boys fooled around and did not fulfil their responsibilities, such as watching the fire or
getting more wood for the fire, Ralph got mad but he did not try to make a change. Ralph did not
enforce the rules; he had only warned them and kept doing just that. One reason it was hard to
sustain was because there was no sense of leadership skills. By now, Ralph had no self
consciousness in public thinking but would treat the day s decision as though he was playing
chess. The only trouble was that he would never be a good chess player (Golding. 128). Ralph did
not take on the proper leadership role that he should have, which was to lead by example. An
example that illustrates this is when he told the boys to build tents; he could have shown them
how to build them instead of just telling them to do it. Also when a situation did not go as
planned, Ralph did not know what to do. There was a lack of hope for the future and a general
lack of a positive outlook. It was also hard to sustain because there was a lack of entertainment
which the boys wanted as a reward for their efforts but never did. There was never any fun such as
music, chants, festivities or feasts. Entertainment is an aspect that helps to maintain a perfect
world because it is a way to make people happy as happiness makes one satisfied. There was a value
in the attempt of Ralph s utopia. They were stuck on an island with no idea of when they were
Essay about A Postmodern Bore
A Postmodern Bore
Imagine, if you will, a world where everyone was the same, where your neighbors had the same
clothes as you did, the same kind of dog, and the same color house as you did. A world where
everyone looked like everyone else, behaved the same, and thought the same. A world characterized
by total and complete conformity through assimilation, incorporation, and deindividualization. A
world where an elite cadre of individuals determined the very shape of reality itself. This world is
held by many scholars to be typifying of one of the major aspects of Postmodernism. Although
Postmodernism refuses to define itself , (Kozinets see later,) it according to many of these scholars

A society should not be based on the view of the world from one perspective to the exclusion of all
other perspectives. Rather, it should be able to see all points of view and incorporate them into its
worldview.
But after awhile this philosophy began to be replaced by a new system, a know all, see everything
Orwellian big brother that attempted to maintain a rigid order among individuals, and among their
thoughts, because in order for this diseased system, Postmodernism, to survive, it was necessary
for all men to be exactly equal, in their behavior, in their actions, and in their thoughts. It began
with architecture and art, and then proceeded to infect our individual beliefs and opinions.
Whereas once men were free to hold their own opinions, now all men were required to believe the
same beliefs. (As the Counting Crows have observed, round here, we all look the same. ) According
to Habermas, this new system was created by a flaw in the old one. This flaw lay in the fact that
Modernism had no set of rules for interpersonal contact. Therefore, whenever two peoples individual
spheres did come in contact with one another, each ones sphere was influenced
The City Of Metro Atlanta
In Duluth, which is on the outskirts of metro Atlanta, about twenty five miles from downtown,
there is a cluster of Asian supermarkets filled with exotic spices and food. Located among a large
population of Asians, Assi Plaza is a well known Korean grocery store that caters many palates.
An hour after the store opens the morning rush comes jamming in. By 10:30 in the morning,
sampling stalls are set and the foods are ready to be served. Along with the smell of vegetables,
fruits, and fishes, the store has an abandon of aroma from freshly cooked food at the food court and
the sampling stalls that can be used to differentiate parts of the store. The store attracts different type
of people depending on the time of day. The morning to noon Assi community consists of senior and
middle aged minorities that are non native English speakers with roots from Asia and Latin America.
Assi store has a very successful ad campaign targeting the minorities. The store focuses its ads
towards Chinese, Vietnamese, South Asians, and Hispanic shoppers through the use weekly
newspapers as stated by Andrian Putra in the Georgia AsianTimes. However, unlike Kroger,
Walmart, and other mainstream supermarkets, there are no mailing ads or coupons sent home or
attached to the newspaper. It is purely through the word of the mouth if people are unable to read the
Chinese or Korean newspapers that circle around Atlanta. There are approximately three Korean
owned supermarkets in the area that also
Earth Day Methuselah Research Paper
Commend Earth Day: World Oldest Tree s Location Is Not Publicly Disclosed
Methuselah, the official world s oldest known living tree, is about 4,847 years old. It is a Great
Basin bristlecone pine that grows in the White Mountains of Inyo County in eastern California. The
exact location of the tree is not publicly disclosed as well as no picture of it is shared for its
protection.
According to New York Times, the officials did not impart any picture of Methuselah because they
fear that visitors can trace its exact location. This is to safeguard the oldest tree from any
harassment such as visitors carving their names in the bark of the tree or recklessly cutting the tree.
This happened before way back in 1964.

His drill bit stuck in the tree, according to some foresters. Then, Currey and the foresters cut the tree
down to remove his tool. After counting its rings, he then realized that he had slain the oldest tree in
the world.
Edmund Schulman, a scientist and a dendrochronologist of the Laboratory of Tree Ring Research
at University of Arizona, computed the age of Methuselah in 1957. He seized few samples from
the tree with a tool called increment borer and then matched up the ring patterns from every
sample, according to Matthew Salzer, a research associate at the Laboratory of Tree Ring Research.
They took samples from various parts of the tree to have an estimate of the age of the tree.
The researchers also discovered that another bristlecone pine tree might supersede Methuselah.
Some organizations said that the tree is about 5,065 years old. On the other hand, the existence and
the age of the tree could not be confirmed by the Laboratory of Tree Ring Research, the Archangel
Ancient Tree Archive and the forester. They are still investigating the tree, according to Debra
Schweizer, the spokeswoman for Inyo National

Home By Dorothea Lange Analysis
This photo is an image of a billboard along U.S. 99 behind which three poverty stricken families of
migrants are currently living. It presents the different hardships that these families faced during the
dust bowl and all of the different things they had to fight through just to survive. There is a national
crisis relating to displaced farmers and their families having no place to go and having to live in
poverty. The audience is first drawn to the billboard that is partially cut off from our view. This is
because the photographer is trying to reel one into what lies beneath the sign. There are chairs,
tables, and other living items that are all places beneath as if their were simply a home with no
walls. To these families, it is essentially their so called home. Many audience members to develop
sympathetic feelings as they discover the true deprivation given to these people and children. The
children in the photo really start turning heads as one might know, children always have a soft spot
in people s minds. This shows that it wasn t just the adults or the men in the family... Show more

Dorothea Lange was a photographer that was taking a report for the U.S. Farm Security
Administration in hopes to show the awful living conditions of displaced farmers that are migrating
to Western states. She took this photo for many reasons, but her main purpose is to attempt to
present the idea that some aren t as lucky as others, and that is when a community or nation need to
come together to see the holistic problems. She wants to make people ask questions and let their
sympathetic emotions create a force that will hopefully solve these problems. Also, she wanted the
government and banks see where they put people and what they are putting children through. This
might help start a movement within these powers to help the unfortunate and poverty stricken
