Hatred In Lloyd Jones s Mister Pip
What s worse than being hated is being ignored, because it s like you don t exist at all and your
presence is nothing Unknown. Many people believe that being outright disliked is the worst
thing someone could do to another person. However, being disregarded or ignored can have a
much larger and greater effect on one s self esteem and personal life. Many people suffer from
exclusion everywhere around the world in schools and workplaces. Being ignored and negatively
acknowledged can both be detrimental to one s self esteem and their overall productivity in offices
and schools. I believe that being ignored has a much greater effect on one s personal well being and
attitude towards life than outright dislike. In the novel Mister Pip, by Lloyd... Show more content on

There are many different unique relationships but the most notable are his portrayal of characters
that have outright dislike of each other. Jones portrays negative acknowledgement between
characters such as Matilda s mom, Dolores, and Mr. Watts. He is thoroughly disliked by Dolores
because he is for one, white and second, does not believe in God or the Devil. Nonetheless, despite
the hate, Mr. Watts doesn t seem to mind one bit about this and carries on through life without feeling
ashamed or distraught. He takes it upon himself to educate the children of the village and to open
their minds to the world around them. Ultimately, Dolores dedication to the Bible is what draws
the line between Mr. Watts and her. The quotes: At the end of the story, my mum looked across to
Mr. Watts, and the two of them held each other s eye until they remembered us and When she
showed up in class the next morning it was obvious she hadn t come to speak to us. She had
come to pick a fight with Mr. Watts . These two quotes exemplifies the fact that tension has been
created between the two individuals as a result of their own personal beliefs. Dolores explicitly
expresses hatred and dislike towards Mr. Watts and does not want him to educate her girl Matilda.
Although Mr. Watts was negatively acknowledged by Dolores, he does not falter off of his life
path and continues to educate and be kind to all the people around him.Sadly, by the end of the
book, he pays the ultimate price, sacrificing himself for the village that never really accepted his
presence. Evidently, through this example, Lloyd Jones shows that dislike and negative
acknowledgement is not nearly as severe as if one was being disregarded or
Elder Abuse and Neglect
Elder Abuse and Neglect Teresa Martini Rasmussen College Author Note This research paper is
being submitted on December 8, 2011, for Mara Pehkonen s M230 Medical Law and Ethics
Course. Elder abuse is the most common type of abuse that gets looked over. People normally do
not suspect or even think an elderly person may be getting abused, but this is a serious topic in
nursing homes and hospitals. Every health care professional needs to learn the warning signs and
symptoms of elder abuse to prevent this from happening. According to the National Center on Elder
Abuse, elder abuse is a term referring to any knowing, intentional or negligent act by a caregiver or
any other person that causes harm or a serious risk of harm to a vulnerable... Show more content on

Unfortunately, many residents in nursing homes today are being starved, dehydrated, over
medicated, and suffer painful sores. Often times they are isolated, ignored, and deprived from
social contact and stimulation. Care givers are often overworked and grossly underpaid which
often results in them showing rude and abusive behavior to the residents. Studies have found that
individuals in poor health are more likely to be abused than individuals who are in relatively good
health. In addition, caregivers who are dependent on the elder financially are also more likely to
perpetrate abuse (De Benedictis, 2011). A simple request for such things as water or an escort to
the bathroom may cause the care giver to respond in a rude and offensive way demonstrating
inappropriate behavior. According to an article written by Bryan Robinson (2002), Helen Love, a
75 year old grandmother of three, looked into the video camera and told of being severely beaten by
a nursing home caregiver who discovered she had soiled herself. He choked me and he went and
broke my neck, said Love, who had to wear a metal halo in the videotaped deposition from July
1998. He broke my wrist bones, in my hand. He put his hand over my mouth. Two days later,
Love died. There is no one good explanation of elder abuse and neglect. Elder abuse is a difficult
problem that can emerge from several different causes. Elder abuse is a complex problem that can

Dehumanisation in Dystopian Literature
The twentieth century has seen a rise in the appearance of a distinctive literary sub genre, the
dystopian or anti utopian novel with dehumanisation as its dominant theme. To what extent do 1984
and Brave New World depict a dehumanised society?

Both Orwell s 1984 and Huxley s Brave New World certainly deny humanness to the characters in
their novels. Kelman defines humanness as having two key attributes, identity and community.
Dehumanisation occurs when these are removed from society. It is true that individuality is denied
to citizens and although the community remains, it is subverted in order to fit the government ideal.
It can therefore be said that dehumanisation occurs as people are denied and identity and the true ...

Eddie Marcus states dystopias impose authoritarian control over language in order to prevent
formulation of heterodox thought and this is very apparent in 1984 .
Although characters use of language in Brave New World is also restricted, whereby the traditional
meaning of language is debased, it is not to the same extent as the language restriction in 1984.
The World state, just like The Party, uses language in order to restrain its people. One of the ways
it does this is through hypnopedia, which invades the thoughts of people in their sleep during
infancy, conditioning them to think and behave in a certain way. For example I m glad I m not an
Epsilon. These statements are dehumanising in the sense that they force people to identify with a
collective group, for example an Epsilon rather than an individual. The use of hypnopedia causes
the loss of individuality and is, therefore, a means of dehumanisation. These slogans are repeated
by Lenina, showing how The World state has invaded the thought processes of the people.
Language is associated with powerful human emotion and the World State has sacrificed these
emotions in the name of social stability. This has lead to a change in the meaning of many words.
For example, Love is now equated with sexual activity and milk has become pasteurised external
secretion. Huxley s use of language in Brave New

The first being the dot mapping method, I had used this method in my map because it is a highly
effective way to show density differences in geographic distributions across a landscape, and the
dots show exactly where the event occurs. The second mapping method I had used was the
proportional point symbol to indicate the scale and size with simple symbols proportionally to
the data value found at that location. Large circles represent a higher density of population
(urban areas) and smaller scale is a smaller density of population (rural areas). I had use the Miller
cylindrical map projection for my two variable thematic map for the following reason; first being
the map is due to the accuracy and clearly defined of local shapes. We are displaying geographic
data and it is important to have a projection that does not distort the area to effectively map the
data. Secondly the map avoids scale exaggeration, which is also important when mapping
geographic data within regions. One manipulation I had made to my map to improve the
communicative effectiveness of my map, was to only emphasize the borders of France to clearly
define the geographic area where the data is applicable. Advantages to using ArcGIS to map this
data was that it provides a great simplistic map to communicate the data to spatial regions, and the

In contrast to the two stories, the reasons why characters struggle in A silver Dish are dissimilar.
In A silver dish , there is more than one character that represents the struggles of the story. Woody,
one of the protagonists represents the only male child of a family which at the age of fourteen
years old, was in charged of his household; Woody s mother and two sisters You are going to be
the man of the house (1943), he was told by his father Morris, who abandoned them irresponsibly
to go out to the world and live the life that he had always wanted, Morris said, I going to move

or miss achieving. Throughout the story Woody, a grown man now, remember hi infancy with
sadness and due to the separation of his parents, the different kinds of religious influences that he
was living under and yearn of having that male figure at home. Morris attitude was puzzling at
some point. He was trying to take Woody in a way that he wasn t under the influence of any
religion, but to be whoever he wanted to be. Woody struggles but he becomes a man of good.
Although Morris was irresponsible, he wanted to live his own life and it seems that
Sprint Breathing Rate
For persons 1 3, as predicted, the heartrate and breathing rate were relatively low with Person 1,
respectively, being 74 20, Person 2 being 86 16 and Person 3 being 73 and 19. The 50m Sprint
resulted in having the highest heartrate for persons 1 and 2, 152 and 171 respectively, and the
Stairs resulted in being the highest for Person 2 at 130. Strangely, the breaths per minute for persons
1 and 2 were highest, at 40 and 39 respectively, whereas Person 3 experienced their highest breaths at
43 for the 50m Sprint, which coincides with their highest heartrate. These trends show that the
hypothesis is correct in the sense that the heart and breathing rate did increase with physical
exercise, however, the hypothesised theory that the Sprint... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When exercise is undertaken more oxygen is used for the necessary organs, therefore resulting in
CO2, once a gas exchange has occurred. When put under stress the body responded by increasing the
heart rate, by enlarging the arterioles and venules to allow more oxygenated blood to flow to the
necessary muscles and decreasing the size of ones that weren t as important. In order to keep up
with the demand for oxygenated blood, the breathing rate increased drastically. The method was
relatively effective for recording the necessary data. However, some modifications had to be made
such as: the amount of laps on the stairs. This changed to two laps, as once was believed to not
provide enough varying data. The method could have been improved by ensuring that, once
completed, the person performing was at or very close to their resting heart and breathing rate before
commencing the next exercise as this would be one factor in providing inaccurate results. Another
improvement is that, rather than running a certain amount of time (stairs), the person would run for
a length of time and then test their heart and breathing rate as some people may not finish, and
therefore put their body through enough stress, to provide difference within their

Final Essay
The films Stagecoach (1939), High Noon (1952) and Unforgiven (1992) lend from popular themes
from frontier myths, however they employ these themes in different ways that are representative of
the social change present during the decades in which they were produced. These themes include
gender roles, villains, and the issue of justice within a community, glamorization of violence and the
genre typical structure of the Western move. An overall trend in the Western genre is evident in the
way that these movies continuously challenge the progress that was representative of the frontier
West. Initially, western films did not have any social connotations attached to them other than the
glamorization of the west, but as the films progressed with time we see this time evolving. ... Show

Transformational and Transactional Leadership Styles
Transformational and Transactional Leadership Styles
Transformational leadership theory is intended to create positive change in the followers whereby
they take care of each other s interests and act in the interests of the group as a whole. Essentially
the leader s task is consciousness raising on a wide plane. The leader s fundamental act is to induce
people to be aware or conscious of what they feel and to feel their true needs so strongly, to define
their values so meaningfully, that they can be moved to purposeful action.
The basis for transformational leadership is the belief that people will follow a person who inspires
them. The theory postulates individuals with vision and passion can achieve great things and the
way to get things done is by injecting enthusiasm and energy. The theory also asserts awareness of
task importance motivates people. Other assumptions include the belief that a focus on the team or
organization produces better work, association with a higher moral position is motivating and will
result in people following a leader who promotes this, and working collaboratively is better than
working individually.

In this leadership style, the leader is charged developing motivation, moral and performance of his
follower group. Transformational leadership is about values and meaning, and creating a purpose
that transcends short term goals and focuses on higher order needs
Abraham Maslow developed a hierarchy of needs that all humans must have met in
The Holy Fool Archetype
The ancient archetype of The Holy Fool has existed for centuries, depicting an individual who acts
in impractical or foolish ways for the sake of religious devotion. Spanning literature from various
religions over several centuries, this archetype has found an unusual home in the 1979 Western
parody, The Frisco Kid. The protagonist Avram, a Polish rabbi tasked with leading a Jewish
community over 6,000 miles away in San Francisco, plays the role of the Holy Fool, continually
acting in a manner consistent with irrationality due to his lack of knowledge of American cultural
norms. As he journeys across America from Philadelphia to San Francisco, he continually finds
himself in trouble with thieves, the law, and Native Americans, yet... Show more content on

Having completed Rabbinical school in Poland, he knows hardly anything about America, and
aside from his ability to speak English, has no real skills to help him adapt to the new world he is
thrown into. But, these are exactly the traits that allow him to accomplish his two goals of reaching
San Francisco to lead his new congregation, and delivering the Torah (in a complete state) to said
congregation. For example, after he and Tommy are chased by Native Americans on horseback,
Avram notices the Torah is missing from his rucksack (1:02:17). Having just asked Tommy What did
[the Native Americans] want? (1:04:47), Avram demonstrates a lack of understanding of the general
rivalry between Native American s and the white man, ignorant to their general perception as
dangerous in the west during the 1850 s. Typically, one in Avram s position would stray away from a
Native American tribe that had previously attempted to chase them down, but, Avram, ignorant to
the potential dangers, and dedicated to successfully delivering the Torah, returns to retrieve it. And,
even though he and Tommy are initially captured by the Native Americans, Avram eventually gets
the Torah back, facilitated by his ignorance and dedication. Similarly, Avram s entire friendship with
Tommy is based on his ignorance to Tommy s bank robbing tendencies and outlaw status. Avram, a
man of morals, would likely not associate with someone like Tommy if he was aware of
The Ancient Greeks
During the time of the ancient Greeks we read about their remarkable achievements; whether it be
social, political, or cultural, we would not understand their accomplishments if it weren t for their
precise interpretation of text and the development of a lasting language. When looking at our lives
today, the lack of credit which goes to our ancient descendants is beyond decent; for the lives in
which they established for themselves, only furthered our capability and our potential of exceeding
what was never imagined. A civilization where individuals look to the text, the mathematical

On top of that, I am able to say that the Greek society was a lot more established than I ever believed,
with evidence of their writing, record keeping, and the creation of the democratic system many
nations frame the foundations of the country today. With the development of a young language, the
greeks were able to formulate a alphabet with it, creating the ability to write, and thereon creating
records for trade, history, and mathematical/scientific testimonies. Now if we consider evolution of
western civilization, we can easily see and conclude that the simple foundations of humanity
explained throughout the paper are just a miniscule amount of advancements made by the ancient
greek civilization not to mention the Mesopotamians, Mycenaeans and Egyptians and their
advancements in architecture and more. Western civilization is no one place, but is the way
humanity moves forward, for what was in the east was discovered, but coming from the west was the
wind and what was the unknown. Western societies are ones that are civilized and carry out more
than hunting and gathering communities, those that carry out trade, government, and that think

A large percentage of current doctors are reaching the age of retirement and many students are
turned off from the field for multiple reasons. One of the greatest disadvantages of having any
medical job that involves such high stakes, are the pressures of professional liability. Many
doctors are at risk of being sued for malpractice during their medical careers. Medical liability can
deter doctors away from tending to high risk patients or even practicing at all. According to a
study conducted by the American Congress of Obstetrics and Gynecology, 58% of OB GYNs
said they changed how they practiced due to the risk or fear of being sued. Slightly more than
one out of four OB GYNs (27%) decreased the number of high risk patients, 24% increased the
number of cesarean deliveries, 19% stopped offering VBACs, and 6% dropped obstetrics

especially for women who are in high risk situations. No woman should have to worry about being
denied treatment by a doctor for fear of being potentially sued. When obstetricians gynecologists are

a large mess of legal issues, but it also takes a toll on the mental health and confidence of these
