Film Music And The Modern Day
Music has been used to propel the narrative in silent films throughout its history, but how did
Bource achieve this in a silent film made in the modern day? This essay will be discussing the
original styles used in silent film music, how Bource used them today in such an award winning
way, and how he added his own imprint, and arguably modern flare to the musicof The Artist.

Silent films first appeared around the 1890s in America. 1 They are films that were without
synchronised sound and especially no spoken dialogue. Music was recognised as an important part
of film/moving images from the beginning, as it contributed to the atmosphere of the films and
allowed the audience to understand and feel the emotions being portrayed. 2 When music was first
being combined with moving image pianos, organs and phonographs were the first instruments used
to provide the music, and as the popularity of film grew over the years, some of the larger theatres
began using orchestras to accompany the film. 3
This early film music had many influences from different genres, such as jazz and blues, ragtime,
vaudeville, and the style of music from Broadway musicals was also becoming popular. 4 Film
composers of this era had a wealth of popular music to draw on in order to create the music for the
silent films they were working on. The varying genres also meant that they were able to create
different styles and moods of music to suit the different genres of film, or the different
Essay on The Role of Women in Australia in 1914- 1918
During the years from 1914 1918 Australia was at constant battle all over the world fighting for
the british. With battles deaths always follow. So many people say, what did we ever gain from
WW1 we lost so many people as a country . Although we lost almost 60,000 men and 150,000
wounded or taken prisoner. After the war the British Government offered ex servicemen free
transportation to some of the colonies, 17,000 migrants arrived in Australiabetween 1919 and 1922.
Community organisations paid for migrants to come over to Australia. Small numbers also arrived
independently. It was also said that up to 300,000 men came over from britain post war to live. The
British government gave an incentive to migrate over because so many people... Show more content

Many people still thought that a woman s place was in the kitchen , this changed shortly after the
second world war. 500,000 women joined the workforce post WW1 because all of the men had
gone to war. This set Australia up and benefited from more people with a wider experience in many
jobs.

Economy and industries

Australian industries such as steel making and pharmaceuticals suddenly found themselves
filling roles that were previously done by German rivals. Australian government was keen to
make sure that Australian wheat, wool and meat reached Britain and helped the war effort there.
The government was keen to make sure that the Australian wheat wool and meat industries made
it over to britain to help out with the war efforts. So a law was made giving it the power to
acquire the whole wheat and wool harvests which had seen to be an impossible action under the
Constitution, but were then allowed to be done because of the new law. However, shortages at
war and selling scarce goods at a very high price meant that many ordinary working people
suffered because of a rise in price and a massive drop in their standard of living. After the war 400
new products were being sold that previously had been needed to import from enemy countries. This
meant that there was a major fall in the major cities. At the end of the war the Commonwealth had

Persuasive Essay On Babysitting
In my opinion, babysitting is very beneficial to pretty much anyone. I recommend that everyone
try babysitting at least once in their lifetime, because of all the rewards you can get from it. First,
usually for babysitting, you are presented with payment for your services. The more children you
have and the longer you babysit usually ties into the more money you will receive. Second,
babysitting can teach you valuable life lessons. It can prepare you for children of your own, get you
ready for a career in childcareor child development, and overall, it s loads of fun.
Now hold on, before you get too excited about babysitting, there are a few things you may like to
know. If not done correctly, babysitting can end in the injury of yourself or the children you are
taking care of. I recommend before babysitting any children, you should take a babysitting class.
These classes can usually be found at your local hospital, at least that is where I took mine. The
classes can benefit you in many ways, for example, they may teach you how to change diapers,
what to do if a child gets hurt, how to perform CPR, and other important tools to prepare you for
babysitting. Being ready for anything is one of the most significant things I learned from the
babysitting class I attended.
I have babysat numerous times in my life, usually only babysitting two or three children. However,
there was one particular time that I was presented with the opportunity to babysit eight children all in

Cowboys Case Study
An inept passing game proved to be the deciding factor in the Cowboys fifth straight loss. In his
second start, Matt Cassel competed 13 of 25 passes for a mere 97 yards against the Seahawks.
Defensively, DC Rod Marinelli s unit mitigated the play fakes of the Seahawks read option
concepts, but it wasn t enough for the Cowboys, who lost 13 12 in another hard fought battle. The
last time the Cowboys won a game was against the Eagles in Week 2 when Marinelli s unit
smothered the Eagles ground game, holding them to an abysmal 7 yards on 17 rushing attempts.
The Eagles offense hasn t found consistency and quarterback Sam Bradford hasn t been able to
protect the football. It s hard to pump some positive energy through all that s gone wrong for the
Cowboys over their last five games, but with the division still within reach, there s still hope and a...

When the Eagles have struggled executing these concepts, their interior O line has been pushed
off the snap and have missed assignments, allowing penetration to close out running lanes. The
Cowboys defense did a tremendous job in their first meeting on getting pressure up the middle
and containing the edges against the DeMarco Murray led backfield, and without positive yards
on the ground, Bradford wasn t able to get ahead of the down and distance. The key matchup on
the outside between DE Greg Hardy and LT Jason Peters can come a long way on deciphering the
outcome, but for the Cowboys to win their battles in the trenches, their interior front (Tyrone
Crawford, Nick Hayden and David Irving) can t allow Eagles guards Allen Barbe and Matt Tobin
and center Jason Kelce to execute their blocks well, particularly when they pull on outside runs.
Mainly, pressure up the middle will free up the outside rush and spark pressure from all angles

A Quick Glance Into Joan Didion s Life
A quick glance into Joan Didion s life would put readers under the assumption that she identifies
as a standard second wave feminist. A prominent female writer in the 1960s, Didion had initially
left me drawing connections to the likes of Betty Friedan and Gloria Steinem. Even her stern gaze
present on book covers and articles seems to give off a sense of feminine mystique. But after
careful venture into her work, it is my understanding that while feminism plays a role in what
Didion tackles as a writer, it is merely one lens out of many that she uses to advance her writing.
Didion has had an upbringing in Northern California as a daughter of the Golden West (Fabian 1),
and the stories of her family, along with personal observations... Show more content on

From critiques on the corrupt industry of Hollywood filmmaking to images of death in the aptly
named Death Valley, Didion writes about the cultural values of people in 1960s California,
commenting on a sense of collective decline in societal awareness and hinting at how to improve
such downfall through awareness of the self. On Morality discusses the ethics of death and the sort
of culture surrounding how we as a society view mortality, and subsequently, the morality behind
it as well. Didion highlights the disturbing frequency with which the word morality appears in the
media and how casually it is tossed around, her point being that we have no way of knowing [...]
what is right and what is wrong (Didion 162). Observing the power of politics at play has led her
to reckon with these ethics herself, coming to the claim that indulging in a world of morality is
all right only so long as we do not delude ourselves about what we are doing, and why (Didion
162). Didion calls out those in the public eye with a sense that they must be affirmative on their
intentions of choosing sides in ethics, making sense of the world through an initial introspection
and subsequent application in society. Didion fears that we are already at a state of hysteria and
deception in claiming sides just for the sake of it, and thus she approaches her writing with the
notion that we must be aligned with our own values and priorities, uncovering what is failing us as a
Essay on The Life of Jane Addams
Jane Addams, a pioneering social worker, helped bring attention to the possibility of revolutionizing
America s attitude toward the poor. Not only does she remain a rich source of provocative social
theory to this day, her accomplishments affected the philosophical, sociological, and political
thought. Addams was an activist of courage and a thinker of originality. Jane Addamsembodied the
purest moral standards of society which were best demonstrated by her founding of the Hull House
and her societal contributions, culminating with the winning of the 1931 Nobel Peace Prize.
Jane Addams was born on September 6, 1860, the eighth child of a prominent family in the small
town of Cedarville, Illinois. Of the nine ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
College was an exception rather than a rule for women in the 1870s, but John Addams approved
of higher education for women, and Jane wanted to go. In 1877, seventeen years old, Jane
boarded a train at Cedarville station, and set off for Rockford Seminary, a female college in
Rockford, Illinois. Like the twenty two other women in her freshman class, Addams felt singled
out for special opportunity, and she was determined to make the most of it. A few years later,
after organizing a chess club, a debating society, an amateur theatrical group and editing/writing
for the Rockford Seminary Magazine, Jane graduated and returned home to Cedarville. Jane
Addams intended to carry out her plan of attending the Women s Medical College in the fall of
1881 largely because she had to her father she would. Jane soon realized that medical school was
not for her as she found she was incapable of concentrating on her classes, an utter failure and
unable to work at the best of myself. In February of 1882, she dropped out and entered a hospital,
suffering from severe back pain as well as depression. That April, Jane underwent an operation to
straighten her spine caused by an earlier childhood diagnosis, tuberculosis of the spine.
As part of young Jane s rejuvenation, her stepmother and a few other women took her on a trek
through Europe, proving to be excellent therapy. Addams s European tour improved her
Analysis Of The Rock By Peter Blume
Intention:
If you re anything like me and you see this painting of The Rock by Peter Blume (1944), you may
wonder what in the world is going on in the picture. At our first look, we see the obvious; the
enormous rock Peter Blume placed right in the center. After looking at the scenery going on, I think
that the placement and size of the rock is proportioned that way as a sign of it being significant. The
way I see it, the monument plays an important role when it comes down to determining why there
are so many things going on at once in the painting. With the comparison of the details of the hard
working people to the broken rock, half built building, and the smoke, I will establish the reasons of
why this picture shows both destruction and loyalty and the ways destruction in this painting also
results in uniting the people working.

Thesis/Claim:
The significance of the monumental rock placed right smack in the core of the painting, is the
reason as to why the workers will be united by the desturction that occured to them.

Breaking it Down, Part 1:

The most coherent pieces of evidence that show the rock is represented as a monument and the
workers are there because of it are the proportion and how everyone is working hard around it.
In terms of the placement, the rock was positioned to be right smack in the middle of this
community balanced on a couple of woods. It s strange to see how it is placed because since it is
balanced on unalligned chunks of wood, I
Prosecution Intimidation And Witness Intimidation
There are many reasons victims do no want to testify in court. Legal cynicism and witness
intimidation are a couple of the top reasons. One reason I feel is overlooked is witness intimidation.
Witness Intimidation is when threats are made by defendants to discourage victims or witnesses of
a crime from reporting or testifying. (Connick and Davis 439) If a victimfeels threatened, they often
become hesitant to testify sometimes even to report the crime. With the right incentives, victims and
witnesses would be more likely to participate in the process of testifying against a defendant.
Witness intimidation happens in many forms, such as: looks, threats of violence, physical violence,
property damage, etc. If you commit a crime, you will ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
These programs are still new in the eyes of the justice system. Victims and witnesses receiving help
were more likely to appear when summoned than those who had not been aided. (Neubauer and
Fradella 236) Victims who are testifying against a defendant are authorized to receive protection,
whether inside or outside of court.
There are services provided to protect the victims or witnesses. When waiting in the courtroom, they
are entitled to a special waiting room, away and out of sight from the defendant and the defendant s
friends and family. By separating the defendant from the victims and witnesses, it lessens the change
of intimidation within the courtroom. Even victims and witnesses that are incarcerated have the
option and availability to be separated from others to keep them safe. By separating from certain
groups, gangs are not able to finish hits on a victim or witness.
Another way to keep a victim or witness in testifying is ensuring that everyone coming in and out of
the courthouse will be on video surveillance. By taping everyone coming into the courthouse,
hopefully it would discourage any intimidation within the courthouse. Also by having surveillance, it
would give the victims and witnesses a sense of security, knowing that anybody coming near them in
the courthouse is on camera.
One program to motivate victims to participate in testifying helps with compensating the victims or
witnesses. During the process of the trial and even before when
The Role Of Judgment In The Film Primal Fear
As I am going to use my skills of Critical Thinking and Errors of Judgment in the movie called
Primal Fear by William Diehl to write a paper. Critical term is to describe forms of learning,
thought, and analysis that go beyond the memorization and recall of information and facts. (http:/
/edglossary.org/critical thinking/). For instance, it is very important for students to analyze
situations, to solve problems, and to make good decisions. An Error of Judgment occur in the
process of sorting out and assessing evidence. For an example, to make decisions. These are the two
important skills I will be using throughout the paper/movie.
This movie exercises the principal of critical thinking when attorney Martin Vail takes on the case of
an alter boy who got accused of brutally murdering murdering the Archbishop of Chicago. Vail ...

factor. Which includes when Aaron transforms into a new person, Roy and when Vail finds a
pornographic videotape at Archbishop s apartment of Aaron with his girlfriend, Linda and another
alter boy that Archbishop was filming. This was so profound in the movie because it made Aaron
/Roy look more poor/good guy who needs help/treatments with his conditions. In addition,
Archbishop was bad guy for what he did to Aaron, Linda, and an another alter boy, but everyone
else knew him as a good Archbishop who would never do such things.
No one used critical thinking in this movie, but Vail did separated facts from opinions. Also, he
avoided the errors of logic in this film. If he would ve used the Critical Thinking qualities, then he
would ve looked for the evidence and not just jumped into the conclusion. The qualities he could ve
used are look for unstated assumptions, distinguish between ideas and information, and recognize
decisions. He should ve used these qualities to decide what was right and what was wrong. Also, this
would have helped him to understand the
The Stock Market Is Important For Success Or Failure Essay
The stock market can be very risky and it can be intimidating to someone with no experience
dealing with stocks. However, with the right research and a lot of patience it is possible to be
successful, but it will not be without challenges. The stock market can be highly unpredictable and
can fluctuate at times for reasons we either do not understand or cannot see. Even with research and
planning investing in the stock marketis a risk, so it is better to approach it with the most information
possible. How well you understand stocks and the stock market can be key factors in your success
or failure.
The first thing a person starting out in stock market investments will need to research is
themselves. You will need to look closely at your financial situation and figure out not only how
much you can afford to invest, but how much you can afford to lose. While these two things
sound like they would be the same thing, they are not. Most people tend to think of investing as
making money, not losing it. However, it is possible that a person could lose everything that they
invested. The stock market crash in 1929 left many investors penniless and devastated (Colombo).
You have to research your finances and decide how much to invest with this type of possibility in
mind. The stock market is very unpredictable and the right research here can be the difference
between bouncing back after a loss and losing everything. You also need to figure out what your
goals are. If your goal is to

Skipper Butterfly Research Paper
The Skipper Butterfly is in the family Hesperiidae. They have a wingspan of 29 to 31 millimeters,
1.14 to 1.22 inches, and are 2.5 to 6 inches, 6.604 to 15.24 centimeters, in length. This butterfly s
appearance is different than other butterflies in many ways. The antennae club is hooked
backwards like a crochet hook while the typical butterflies have club like tips to their antennae.
They have stockier bodies and larger compound eyes, and they have stronger wing muscles in the
plump thorax, resembling many moths than the other two butterfly lineages, which are
Rhopalocera and Papilionoidea. Their wings are usually smaller than their bodies and when at
rest they are angled upwards or spread out and rarely folded up completely. Their wings are more
well rounded with less sharply tipped forewings. They either have prominent hindwing tails or
more angled wings. They come in the colors of browns and grays; some are more boldly black and
white.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Cave crickets have very large hind legs with drumstick shapes femora and equally long, thin
tibiae, and long, slender antennae. The antennae are closely apparent and next to each other on
the head. They are a brownish color and humpbacked in appearance, always wingless, and the
bodies of early instars may appear translucent. Most cave crickets favor cool/damp places like
caves, rotten logs, underneath leaves or rocks and will not reproduce indoors unless they find
continuous darkness, and moist conditions. Living in perpetual darkness, as deep in caves, may
have reduced and missing eyes and often have long slender limbs. Most of these crickets are
omnivorous and will eat on most anything organic. Most will catch and eat other smaller animals
when they can. If they are in houses, they may chew on paper products and occasionally fabric.
They can grow up to 5 cm in body and 10 cm for the legs. They are found worldwide and is
widespread in North America, south of Arctic
How A Cartel Is A Competitive Market
A cartel is a formal organization set up by a group of firms that produce and sell homogenous
products for the purpose of enacting and sharing monopolistic rents. Their organizations consist of
formal agreements between competing firms to control prices or exclude entry of a new competitor
in a market. The sellers or buyers of a cartelagree to fix selling prices, purchase price or reduce
production using a variety of tactics so that competing on price is avoided. Because most of these
firms are monopolies, they tend to have considerable amounts of market power, thus making them
want to behave like monopolies. With its lack of power, a cartel acts as a counter veil to an
imperfectly competitive market where fewer sellers have the ability to base their products on
decision making and supply and demand.
Since a cartel acts as an imperfectly competitive market, it is best to define it as having a direct
relationship with an oligopoly industry. In Oligopoly markets, few numbers of sellers are joined
together to form a market or an industry. Usually consisting of 2 or 20 firms, their main goal is to
sell and produce differentiated products and services. With decisions influenced by one another, the
price of the product and the quantity of production is fixed in accordance with its member s own
self interest and self respect. The interdependence of firms in oligopoly markets is demonstrated in
the obligation to maintain price stability shown by popular demand. It may lead firms
