Paradox Of Fiction
Fictional works of art are something that is very popular in our culture and draw a large audience,
but why is that when the audience knows that what they are watching is solely a made up story?
The Paradox of Fiction highlights the problem of experiencing emotions about fictional stories. I
think what causes the most questioning is that the audience knows it is purely fictional and in no
way real, but we still feel particularly strong emotions nonetheless. The emotions experienced are in
fact genuine to the viewer, although they are not genuine in a sense of being how one might
respond if they were actually placed in the situation of the characters. I believe that most people use
fictional stories to escape their daily lives and focus on something that they can relate to that doesn t
actually affect their life.
Several questions arise when discussing the Paradox of Fiction: Does fiction matter since it is not
reality? , How does it come to play on our emotions? , Are those emotions real since we would
ultimately react differently had it been reality? . The Paradox of Fiction is hard to understand
because we cannot know for sure why we feel the need to get so emotionally involved in a fantasy
world. The emotions that surface when we watch a scary movie are seemingly as real as if we
were actually in the same situation in our real life. But what causes us to feel this way is something
that is still trying to be understood by many. There is no logical, scientific
Tadeusz Borowski
What We Must Do To Survive Tadeusz Borowski short story Ladies and Gentlemen to the Gas
Chamber , is a compelling story based on Tadeusz Borowski own experiences at Auschwitz
Concentration Camp. This horrific account at Auschwitz is described though the eyes of a
narrator and Henri, one of the forced residents of Auschwitz from Poland. Through the story we
see that the narrator and Henri do whatever it takes in order to survive and live a decent life while
they are forced to stay at Auschwitz. The narrator and Henri are inmates Auschwitz who have the
task of unloading rail cars filled with people and all of their belongings. As we relive the
experiences, we will compare and contrast each of their perceptions as these events unfold.... Show

A whip flies, the woman scream, stumbles, and falls. The narrator even states, I don t know why,
but I am furious, simply furious with these people furious because I must be here because of
them. I feel no pity. I am not sorry they re going to the gas chamber. The prisoners feel anger
toward the incomers also because the easiest way to relieve your hate is to turn against someone
weaker. Glimpses of true beauty, dignity, and humanity show periodically within the camp. The
narrator even refers to the camp as being a heaven of peace... Suddenly I see the camp as a haven
of peace. It is true, other may be dying, but one is somehow still alive, one has enough food,
enough strength to work .... The narrator is also touched and surprised as suddenly, above the
teeming crowd pushing forward like a river driven by an unseen power, a girl appears. She
descends lightly from the train , as if she is of higher status or more grace. There is just something
about this girl that makes him so enchanted by her. Her bravery stands out for while she is near the
gas chamber: communal and disgusting. She faces these horrors and with a natural gesture she runs
her hands down her blouse, casually straightens her skirt....mature look in her eyes. This girl
possesses values that the other prisoners have lost. Not only does she have enchanting blond hair,
with beautiful breasts , she also has those rare qualities of courage, faith, and dignity. While she

Essay On The Executive Branch
The many members of the executive branch in our American government system have different
roads to their respective seats, varying motivations while they are in said seats, and contrasting
aspirations for their political careers once they plan to move on from the Senate or the House of
Representatives if they even decide to leave that part of the government. Their practices are not
entirely based on objective governmental values; instead, the members of Congress wheel and deal,
trading favors with each others in the government. We see these measures in films such as Charlie
Wilson s War. Members of Congress get things done by bartering with other Congress members. The
legislative branch of the United States government is basically a... Show more content on

With that comes their fears, personally and for the greater good of the population. They want to
improve the image of this country, and when the reputation and well being of the United States is
not in a beneficial state, they look to change what they can. Charlie Wilson, in the movie, wanted
to ensure that he was able to continue the fight against worldwide communism by opposing the
Soviet Union indirectly via Afghanistan. He was also, personally, deeply moved by the plight of
the Afghan people in the face of the U.S.S.R., which motivated him to move in fear of their rivals
in the east. With that fear of things that can go wrong, naturally, comes the fear of what the
personal repercussions of that can be. These members of Congress obviously have reached new
heights in their political careers and at least want to stay in that position. With mishaps during
their tenure, they can be voted out of office and their political career can begin to take a tumble. It
is not impossible for former members of Congress to climb back into a seat in the House or the
Senate, but being given the boot in any type of field, never mind a high pressure one like politics,
is a big fear for anyone. Thus, politicians in Congress look to make decisions that please not only
their colleagues but those who go to the polls in order to protect

The Rogue Wave ( Rogue Wave, And Peregrine Soliton
It is widely known that the rogue wave (freak wave, killer wave, and Peregrine solitons) is a kind of
wave with a singular, rare, and high amplitude, which causes a dramatic impact on living life.
Generally speaking, the rogue waves usually have deep holes and high crest, and the deep holes
occur before and after the large crest. It has been pointed out that the freak waves have been a part
of marine folklore for centuries by Lawton. ( removed HTML ) ( removed HTML ) 1 ( removed

External Conflict In Othello
IN HIS PLAY OTHELLO, SHAKESPEARE EXPLORES HOW CONFLICT CAN IMPACT
NEGATIVLEY ON PEOPLES LIFE. DISCUCSS THIS STATEMENT?

Shakespeare s Othello is a play dependably based on marital, internal and physical conflict and how it
can negatively impact people s lives. Upon closer inspection, the conflict that exists throughout this
play becomes clear that the conflict is the sole start for the destruction that occurs during the play.
Throughout Othello, each character incites his own jealousy in one another to gain what they crave
most; power. conflict becomes a prominent aspect of tragedy.

internal conflict has the capacity to destruct the true morals of each character.
Conflict stems from Iago s own craving of what others have and what he lacks. Internal conflict is
demonstrated through Iago s emotion of jealousy. as Iago speaks to Roderigo about the moor, his
sense of internal conflict is through Desdemona and Othello s marriage. For example, his quote,
Despise me if I do not. Three great ones of the city in personal suit to make me his lieutenant off
capped to him I am worth no worse a place . Acts to be a metaphor, emphasising his conflicted
state of mind. Iago believes he deserves the position of lieutenant but Othello has a different
opinion. This clearly shows Iago s hate for Othello because he is a man of power, something Iago
desires. Due to Iago s jealousy Othello finds himself in the middle of Iago s plots causing a
negative impact on Othello s life. This also impacts each related characters life as Iago is devious
and back stabbing towards Othello. Due to Iago, conflict is shown to negatively dominate in people
s lives.

Conflict is the main theme Shakespeare explores in this play. Brabantio, Othello s father in law
finds himself the root cause to many complications in Othello and Desdemona s marriage. This is
marital conflict due to Brabantio causing issues between the married couple as he wants them
separated. Brabantio begins to display his hate towards Othello when Othello announces his undying
love for Desdemona Brabantio quoted o thou foul thief, where hast thou stowed my daughter? . This
is a metaphor as Brabantio is convinced that Othello spelled her to love him. Brabantio believes

Realism In Tony Kushner s Angels In America
Angels in America: Millennium Approaches by Tony Kushner can be conventionally defined as
a work of Theatricalism. Breaking the preconceived notions of theatre such as gender casting,
fluent scenes, and varying extremes ranging from characters, to visuals, to the introduction of
historical figures. However, the work strikes a note of realism. We find ourselves encompassed
by passionate actors sharing real emotions with us, scenes based in historical events, and
characters placed in events that we then find to be our own realities. While we find our realities
to be true and heightened by those in the work could it be possible that some of these characters
realities are in fact false, or being defined by the theatricality that surrounds them? Harper serves as
an emotionally charged wife to Joe, who questions not only his sexuality, but her purpose as a wife.

Kushner) and a bit later when she is in this place, I... Feel better. There are ice crystals in my
lungs, wonderful and sharp. (3.3 p105 Kushner) We see that for Harper being away from Joe
results in distance and the loss of warmth, which we normally relate to death. She has died, a part
of Joe has died. What can help to reaffirm her as Joe s moral guide, or compass is that shortly after
we see Harper in her cold place Joe commits what we know to be his first sexual act with a man.
His values have died. (3.7 p121 Kushner) Within in her cold place Harper further has the ability to
create it s bounds and limitations, which is unique and signifies that she is other worldly. While
Mr.Lies tells her they are in Antarctica, she constantly defies what he states to be facts, what she
says becomes the reality of the place. Something that no other character in the play has yet to do.

Your Toolbox Of Social Work Skills
Your toolbox of social work skills
What are skills? Others can define skills in several of ways. How I define skills is being able to do
things but being very good at it, also to be able to pick up fast on a project that is given to you, or
to be proficiency at something that interest a person or a job. Skills mean the ability, coming from
one s knowledge, practice, aptitude, etc., to do something well. My toolbox of social work skills
which I use in my field would consist of the PACT Assessment, RAI Juvenile Risk Assessment,

Evaluate your practicum mission statement
I am place at the DYRS Family Court Liaison Unit. The department mission statement is to
effectively represent DSCYF in court proceeding by providing a department perspective resulting in
recommendations that are presented in one voice and support positive outcomes for all participants.
The mission statement is exactly what is presented in the court. I rate the mission statement as is a
five to be an excellent statement. Everything I do in my field is basically everything that the mission
statement states. I like how the liaisons advocate for the youth and support the family. One thing that
I dislike is sometimes the parents come in with attitudes and the liaison have to compromise with
who they are, and I can understand how hard that can be, but it has been done.
The Liaison unit represents the Department in juvenile bail proceedings and provides intake
services for youth who have been ordered to community supervision by DYRS. This statement is
what I have been doing since the first day I started. The client has to fill out the form, and when it
comes down to processing the intakes it is hard to read some of the hand writing which can be
frustrated at times. I like doing intakes, adding the clients into the system. Good thing about
intakes, it barely be more than 5 intakes a day. My field placement is a good experience; I like to
hear most of the stories about the clients, because I am amaze by what the children do to put
Victorian Age Analysis
IV. Short Essay: Answer the following as completely as necessary.
These should each be approximately 4 6 sentences long. (15 points each)

35. In this unit, what works have we read that reflect the Victorian Age s widespread doubt about the
nature of man, society, religion, and the universe ? Give specifics from the works to demonstrate
this doubt. Give at least 3 examples with details.

Prejudice concerning the different ranks was one way a man s character was challenged. In Lord
Alfred Tennyson s poem The Coming of Arthur, there were references about how the other royalty
were not accepting of Arthur as King (42 43). The line an uproar made by those / Who cried, He
is not Uther s son suggested that this was because he was not the last King s son (42 43). However,
the prejudice had more to do with the fact that Arthur came from a poor upbringing, and was
therefore not initially accepted into the upper class. During the Victorian age, it was not uncommon
for men to treat their women as objects or property. Throughout My Last Duchess, the Duke
discussed his collection of artwork; the way Robert Browning words flowed from the Duke s
paintings to the sculptors and included his last Duchess, implied they were all part of one
collection. The Duke s statement, I gave commands; / Then all smiles stopped together suggested
something sinister, as if, as part of his collection the Duchess could be disposed of
Sound In The Clapet
Upon watching this film, the major motifs appeared to be sound, water, and color.
There were minor ones such as feet and elevation. Of the three major motifs, I feel that sound
conveyed the major theme of the film. It is the most compelling motif because sound in its various
forms special effects, rhythm, and music are used to convey the various forms of the human condition
.
When sound is used as a special effect, we see the films characters behaving in a base, desperate,
animalistic way. It is used to underscore the bizarre idiosyncrasies of each of the tenants.
When sound is used in a rhythmic way we see the characters making a human connection, usually in
a humorous slapstick way.
Finally, when we see sound presented in a musical way we ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Of course, there are very few rats, much fewer cows, in this post apocalyptic world. It is a reminder
that human beings have been reduced to being no more than just food in this world.
But there are scenes in the movie that do other than demean the human condition. A rhythmic sound
is used to show slapstick, which is the French version of frivolity. Furthermore, the music is used to
elevate the human condition. Music showcases man s better nature, whether it be his artistic nature
or two people falling in love. For example, in the next scene, Louison pushes a bucket of soap into
the hallway. You hear the notes of a beautiful solo piano as he performs a stunning soap bubble
scene for the two young boys and nearby tenants, and in this scene he meets Julie for the first time.
The next scene is pure frivolity. Clapet and Plusse are making love and the sound of the bed springs
carry through the entire building. A rhythmic sound synchronizes all the other tenants activities and
is used to introduce each of them. Rhythmic sound, in this film, has the power to create a human
briefly connection between all of the characters. Loud repellant sounds, in contrast, create a distance
between them. For example, we hear a loud cacophony of
Research Paper On Venus De Milo
The topic of my final paper will be about the famous Venus de Milo and how two contemporary
artists have responded to the artwork s notoriety. Since the Venus de Milo is considered a symbol
of female beauty, I would like to unpack how the sculpture achieved that recognition in the 19th and
early 20th century. The methodologies I will use include giving a historical account of the object s
history (focusing primarily on French nationalism and the Europe s hunger for collecting classical
Greek sculptures in the 19th century) while using the work of Arman and Mary Duffy to discuss
the issues that arise when describing the Venus de Milo as an objectively beautiful piece of artwork.
For the former approach, I would write about Winckelmann s adoration
Surface Area Volume Ratio Experiment
Surface area / Volume ratio Experiment

Introduction:

The surface area to volume ratio in living organisms is very important. Nutrients and oxygen need
to diffuse through the cell membrane and into the cells. Most cells are no longer than 1mm in
diameter because small cells enable nutrients and oxygen to diffuse into the cell quickly and allow
waste to diffuse out of the cell quickly. If the cells were any bigger than this then it would take too
long for the nutrients and oxygen to diffuse into the cell so the cell would probably not survive.
Single celled organisms can survive as they have a large enough surface area to allow all the oxygen
and nutrients they need to diffuse through. Larger multi celled organisms need specialist ... Show

Interpretation:

In all the blocks of gelatin the rate of penetration of the hydrochloric acid from each side would
have been the same but all the blocks take different amounts of time to clear because they are
different sizes. As the blocks get bigger it takes longer for the hydrochloric acid to diffuse through
the entire block and so clear the dye. It takes longer to reach the centre of the cube even though the
rate of diffusion is the same for all the cubes.
As the volume of the blocks goes up the Surface Area / Volume ratio goes down. The larger blocks
have a smaller proportion of surface area than the smaller blocks.
When the surface area to volume ratio goes down it takes longer for the hydrochloric acid to
diffuse into the cube but if the ratio goes up then the hydrochloric acid diffuses more quickly into
the block of gelatin. Some shapes have a larger surface area to volume ratio so the shape of the
object can have an effect on the rate of diffusion.
By increasing the surface area the rate of diffusion will go up.

Pros And Cons Of Long Term Care Insurance
Question: I would like your opinion about long term care insurance. I am 61, female, divorced with
no children. I am not relying on any kind of large inheritance from my family. What are your
thoughts about this insurance? Will it be helpful to have? Do you need further information from me?
A.A.
Answer: When people need long term care it usually is because they have had some sort of
debilitating illness, an injury, or perhaps it is from the effects of aging. The cause might be
temporary but recovery will be over an extended period of time or care could be required for the
rest of their life. No matter the reason or the time frame, the cost of help can be quite expensive and
most health insurance policies do not cover many of the expenses because they are not medical in
nature. Long term care insurance was created to help cover some the extra expenses such as an
assisted living facility or nursing home. Depending on the specific policy it might also provide
coverage for at home care, home modification, care coordination as well as many other items. Long
term care insurance is especially helpful if the cost of care will exceed the amount you can afford to
spend and not jeopardize the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

an annuity or life insurance policy. You pay a single premium up front and if you never need care
your heirs receive a death benefit. If you do have a claim and start receiving money from the
policy typically the death benefit is reduced by the amount received. In either type of policy, if it is
properly tax qualified, you or your heirs potentially receive the funds
Add Cake, Subtract Self Esteem Analysis
Once upon a time, women were celebrated for their curves. Weight was a symbol of wealth and
fertility in a woman. During this time, women were subjugated to being a housewife and nothing
more. As time and society progressed, a woman s prison became her body and no longer her home.
Women had the freedom to vote, work, play, but could no longer be fat. This new beauty standard
of thinness affects women in many ways. In Add Cake, Subtract Self Esteem written by Caroline
Knapp, she describes her own personal experience on how this impossible standard affects women s
eating which leads to eating disorders and an unhealthy relationship with food. In The Beauty Myth

The Beauty Myth written by Naomi Wolf is an essay written to present how the advancements of
women in social power lead to a societal backlash that lead to a woman s value being equated to
her appearance by both sexes. This devaluation of women has led to a harmful relationship with
food and women subjecting themselves to mental and physical torture to be thin. Wolf describes in

were occupied in domestic seclusion. According to Wolf, when women were in male spheres, that
