mountain of carcasses had to be left to rot (Coetzee 1). Such negligence can be compared to
Captain Joll s and other, similar imperial officer s unlawful treatment of the barbarians, who they
have displaced from their homes, publicly shamed, and tortured so as to prevent an alleged
oncoming war from occurring. Hence, similar to the buck, the barbarians lie in plain sight of the

In the mind of Marlow (the main character in the novel Heart of Darkness), navigating the Congo
River by boat is like traveling back in time to a more primitive, confusing time period. This feeling
of perplexity and uncertainty was oftentimes a common theme within the walls of Marlow s mind.
However, throughout the entirety of his journey through the African wilderness, Marlow was
certain about one thing: he had to meet the famous Kurtz. Although Marlow is in physical contact
with Kurtz for only a number of days, his fascination with Kurtz is so potent that it s able to fuel
an adventurous perseverance in Marlow, change his perception of himself and the world he lived
in, and exemplify how darkness can seize hold of even the most powerful men. When Marlow got

Ireland 1845, food was suddenly scarce, money was hard to earn, and what little was earned was
immediately spent for survival. The people of Ireland had grown up used to missing meals due to
crop failure. However, previous crop failures couldn t compare to the potato famine of 1845. For
the next five years, the blight destroyed nearly all the potato crops and killed many Irish. About one
million people died during this time in Ireland because of the starvation and disease. About two
million fled the lands of Ireland in hopes of escaping the starvation, disease, death, and povertythat
had taken over Ireland since the famine. The tenant farmers, who suffered would farm land that
belonged to the absentee landlords. They would grow many crops, most of which were very
successful. They were only allowed to keep the potato crops for their own; the rest of the crops
would be harvested and exported to England. The absentee landlords lived like kings while the
tenant farmers were forced to sell everything they owned so they could have money to purchase
food to stay alive. When they ran out of things to sell they were then forced to scavenge for food
scraps just to escape death for a while longer. The starvation and struggle of the Irish tenant farmers
could have been avoided if the absentee landlords hadn t been so greedy with collecting the rent.

portrays many different aspects of English social manners in the 1800s, and these facets of English

Darcy gets a bad reputation as a proud and disagreeable man, and Mr. Bingley gets a reputation as

curriculum into the school systems, allowing students to be misled. This is a form of propaganda.

1. The political motivations for English imperialism were made on country that is craving to
succeed in power, to increase their land, to have an armed force, to achieve respect by captivating
colonies, and increase pride and security countrywide. The Pilgrims left England to North
America because they were seeking freedom from religious oppression from King James I. Even
though most of them died during the cross over, the few that made it settle very quickly with the
help of the Native Americans. These groups of people were very religious and wanted to keep
their faith alive. Their leaders in England did not tolerate it so they decide to leave England to a

occupied commonly which resulted on them being homeless and landless. So they had no choice but
to live in the streets. The officials finally realize that them leaving to North America would alleviate
the surplus of population in England. So that is why they migrated to North America to improve
