Funerals And Death Rituals In American Culture
Funerals are a dark, gloomy, and sometimes emotional subject for many people. Death rituals like
funerals are times where we as a community come together to mourn someone s loss; it is
depressing and often turbulent. But we often overlook the positive aspects of events like these in
favor of their negative ones. We can t ignore the griefthat comes with funerals and loss, but we can
investigate how funerals are beneficial to those trying to cope with bereavement. In fact, funerals
and deathrites have many psychological benefits. This is pervasive to grief rituals no matter the
culture or the time period: for example, the people of Ancient Greece and the people of modern day
America. As humans, it is in our nature to perform rituals on... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

In Ancient Greece, for example, there were two main practices for dealing with loss: tombstones
and lamentation. The earliest Greek tombstones found dated back to the Hellenistic period (323 31
BCE). They were mildly expensive, and as such most belonged to the middle class. Emotional
expressions on the stones were evident through the use of elements of personal significance to the
deceased. These emotional expressions were most commonly found on children s graves, and in the
form of things like short biographical inscriptions or depictions of their favorite toys (Melin).
Lamentation was the central death ritual in the world of Ancient Greece. The earliest evidence of it
was in the Mycenaean period (1600 1100 BCE), on painted sarcophagi and clay figurines. A lament
was without exception done by a woman, either a professional lamentress or a close relative of
the deceased. It was considered an art form, a mixture of an improvised theater performance and a
song, and addressed both the dead and the living (Stevanovic). In addition to the performer being
considered an artist, she was also considered to have the role of a witch or a shaman because of
how she acted as an intermediary between worlds. Emotional intensity was always present in a
lament, the performer going so far as to mutilate herself by scratching and beating herself
(Sijakovic). Furthermore, because women had such a powerful role in the Ancient Greece grieving
process, they had a certain power over death. It was for this reason that in the sixth century, laws
were passed against lamentation in some city states, like the Solonian Laws. The laws were not
really about the lamentation, but more about suppressing women because many were fearful of the
power they seemed to hold (Sijakovic,
Compare And Contrast Of King Tut, Aye s Death
As a result of Ankhenaten, King Tut, Aye s death, and the disappearing of Ankhesnamun,
Horemheb and Tey ruled Egypt. There are many theories on how this mystery occured and all of
them have evidence to back up there theories. After everything occured Horemheb ruled Egypt for
20 years. King Tut was killed in an accident so Ankhesnamun wrote a letter to the Hitike king
asking for a prince. When King Tut was found he had a blow to the back of the head, a broken
leg, and his right rib cage was missing, I got this information from a video called How King Tut
Died. The young king died far from home. When the Hitike king sent one of his sons to become
king of Egypt he was killed at the border of the country. Now Ankhesnamun married Aye, which
Cinema In The Philippine Cinema
The Philippine cinema is a roller coaster ride of different emotions and genres that serves the
Filipino people entertainment and enjoyment. Over the past century or so, we ve been filled up
with a lot different stories of characters that are relatable to the people. From the adventures of
Fernando Poe Jr. s Ang Panday to the comedic acts of Babalu and Dolphy, we can say that the
Philippine filmindustry is very reputable and prestigious just like those of in the other countries. In
today s generation, personally, I think people are getting sick of movies that depict mistresses and
anything about them. I also think that one of the genres that are on the rise is the Independent films.
Erik Matti s Indie film, Honor Thy Father, brings a very different tone and story to the plate. The
movie starts off with Edgar (John Lloyd Cruz) picking up his daughter from school. The scene shifts
to their house where Kaye (Meryll Soriano), Edgar s wife, is persuading a group of friends to
invest in her father s business where everyone gets significantly rich. Edgar sits from behind,
listening to how people believe in his wife s words. The next scene shows the essential part of the
story because the movie uses religion as a device to show the irony of being projected as pure and
wholesome can hide the evilness and cruelty of a person. Edgar s family is part of this religious
organization called the Church of Yeshua but Edgar is seen staring at the money being donated by
the people and

Military Technology During The First World War
During the First World War(WWI), no radical victory occurred especially at the Western Front
during 1914 1917 due to military technology limits. This further limited diplomatic negotiations and
concessions. Thus even when multiple chances of peace showed up, war leaders on both sides
failed to grip them. Based on these factors, this essay reasons that military technology, both its
failures and successes, instead of diplomatic stalemate caused a 4 year Great War instead of a shorter
one. The range and efficiency of the heavy guns and artillery guns were fatal to infantry and created
horrifying casualty . However, the improvement in machine gun technology fastened neither German
invasions nor the Allies counter attacks due to developed... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The effective defence system plus the determination to win the war by attacks emphasized the
ineffectiveness of some weapons. Together they explained militarily why neither side can make
significant strategic progress. Apart from the large number of ill maintained and out dated
artillery that could not break trenches beneath earth, infantries lacked training . Tanks lacked
strategic use in WWI. They were ill developed and inflexible to use, which made them giant easy
targets . These indicate that the war could have ended earlier if any of these weapons had
maximized their efficiency. In 1915, German troops used lethal gas as weapons in the battles.
However, the weapon was quickly studied by the Allied as well . The very little advantage of
Germany was the gas shells. Also Isabel V. Hull argues that this military technology had failures
in both design and usage, otherwise it was able to end the war earlier . Stevenson also added that
neither side considered gas to be a critical weapon and in multiple battles like Verdun, Ypres it did
not yield any radical results . The case of gas warfare shows that, most critically, it was not just
technological successes and failures that resulted in the military stalemate, but also the absence of a
distinctive advantage on one side. Unlike the nuclear technology in the Second World War, neither
side in WWI gained an overwhelming
Barbara Mcclintock
Ever since graduate school, Barbara McClintock liked to study corn. And this started at Cornell! Her
interest in genetics started with her first undergraduate genetics course. Her interest earned her a
phone call from her genetics professor, Dr. Hutchison, which invited her to a graduate level genetics
course; this call cast the die for her future she intended to pursue genetics. At that time period,
women were not allowed to major in genetics in graduate school. This did not stop McClintock.
Inspired by a previous cytology course that delved into the structures and behaviors of chromosomes
during mitosis and meiosis, she began working on corn chromosomes. She eventually developed a
technique that allowed her to visually identify each corn... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
She emphasized that transposition wasn t just about turning corn color genes on and off, but also
possibly a way for the genome to reorganize itself quickly as a response to environmental
conditions. However, most scientists were puzzled and hostile towards her ideas. Though she
eventually gave up trying to convince them and stopped publishing her data, she didn t let that
get her down, because she knew she was right . But there were geneticists who did appreciate her
work. In the 1970s, a molecular basis of transposition was discovered, and the connection between
transposition and antibacterial resistance and cancer was made. Starting in 1971, McClintock
began to receive a long list of awards, including the National Medal of Science awarded to her by
President Nixon, and in 1983, she won the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for her work on
transposition. Afterwards, she remained at Cold Spring Harbor and gave talks on her work until her
death. McClintock s work is relevant even nowadays. It was found that a large percentage of many
genomes including that of humans is composed of transposons. Because transposons can jump
around and insert themselves into protein coding sequences, they could cause cancer. In order for the
cells to protect their genomes, recently, small RNAs called piRNAs were discovered to target
histone methylation to transposon sequences to stop the transposons from moving around.

Caroline Kennedy Outline
Caroline Kennedy, daughter of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, said of her mother, I think my
mother made it clear you have to live life by your own terms and you have to not worry about
what other people think and have the courage to do the unexpected (Caroline Kennedy quotes,
page 1). Jacqueline, known as Jackie, is one of the most well known women of the 1900 s.
Showcasing her strong will and grace from an early age, she inspired many people while serving as
First Lady and after. While Jackie Kennedy on the surface seemed to live a charmed life as a
prominent, beautiful woman, she endured the death of her son, the tragic death of her husband
President John F. Kennedy, and the death of her second husband Ari Onassis. Jacqueline Lee Bouvier

Aristotle was of Greek descent and worked as a shipping magnate. She lived part of each year in
one of his many homes, either in Paris, Athens, or Skorpios Island. Unfortunately, he died in 1968
due to respiratory failure. Once again, Jackie was left a widow. Following his death, she resumed
her career in the writing profession, but as an editor, first at Viking Press, then at Doubleday. She
often wrote the introduction to the books she edited and worked to obtain and lay out
illustrations. Jackie also led a very successful public information campaign with the New York
Municipal Arts Society to save New York s Grand Central Station. She even went as far to go to
Washington to urge Congress to pass landmark legislation and she also lobbied legislators in
Albany, New York, to prevent private organizations from altering or destroying their property if it
was deemed historical architecture. She was very much involved in many organizations, such as
the Literary Lions of the New York Public Library, the American Ballet Theater at Lincoln Center,
the Broadway theater district, and the Central Park Conservancy ( Jackie Kennedy Biography ).
Even though she was not First Lady anymore, she was still very involved and helped many people.
Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis died May 19,1994, in her apartment in New York, New York. She was
64 years old and died due to cancer complications.
