Immigration Into Canada
Immigration Into Canada

Abstract This paper is concerned with the recent wave of Hong Kong immigrants into Vancouver.
The stage is set for this discussion by first explaining some background behind Canadian immigration
policy and then discussing the history of
Chinese immigrants in Vancouver. From these discussions we are informed that
Canadian immigration policy was historically ethnocentric and only began to change in the late
1960s. It was at this point that we see a more multicultural group of immigrants into our nation. The
history of Chinese immigration in
Vancouver, and for that matter, Canada is not positive one. The experiences and prejudices which
were developed over 100 years ago still colours the way in which we view one ... Show more content

Throughout the 20th Century the Canadian government has set targets for the number of immigrant
entries based upon economic criteria. Periods of encouragement have included the early decades of
this century along with the reconstruction era of Post World War II. The 30s, 40s and the recession
of the early 80s have been periods during which the national government has discouraged
immigration. At times, economic concerns have given way to humanitarian ones such as during the
Soviet invasions of Hungary and Czechoslovakia, and during the Vietnamese refugee crisis of the
70s. Generally, however, Canadian immigration targets have reflected the rate of economic
expansion and employment. An exception to this rule was during the latter part of the 1980s. Worry
over the declining fertility rate and our ageing population led the federal government to raise its
annual targets despite high unemployment. Most recently, under economic pressures, the most recent
Liberal government once again lowered the immigration level.

The Geography of Immigration There have also been attempts at controlling the geography of
immigrant settlement. The Federal government stated that one of the primary goals of immigration
is to, foster the development of a strong and viable economy and the prosperity of all regions in
Canada. Immigration in our country has been seen as a means of promoting economic development
in less prosperous regions, as well as supporting heartland areas. While the
Figurative Language In The House Of The Scorpion
The Mood of the Reader. The famous philosopher Plato once said, You can discover more about a
person with an hour of play than in a year of conversation. But dialogue and figurative language
can help the reader understand people, and their surroundings. An hour of play can t tell their
deepest secrets and their emotions to bring your fate s together. In The House of the Scorpion by
Nancy Farmer, the dialogue of her characters and the descriptive language she uses helps show
the mood and helps inference more about the novel. Nancy Farmer creates fascinating dialogue to
introduce the mood and the characters. In the book the author uses a lot of dialogue to move the
events along and introduce feelings to the reader. For instance, when Matt, the main character,
and Matt s friend, see a man lying on the ground and say to each other, Can t we can t we help
him? faltered Matt. It s too late for that poor soul, grunted the bodyguard. What about the doctor?
This quote indicates how kind of a heart Matt has. It introduces guilt to the reader of the man
lying there and a little pleasure of knowing that the main character isn t soulless. It helps add
feelings and depth of the understanding of the reader when reading this dialogue. Secondly, when
Celia, Matt s guardian is leaving for work, says, What s this? the woman said. You re a big boy
now, almost six. You know I have to work. ... Take me with you, begged Matt, grabbing her shirt and
wadding it up with his hands.
College Costs Essay
College Costs

Introduction

It s no secret that financing a college education is getting tougher. College costs have skyrocketed
over the past decade or so, and there s no relief in sight. Average tuition at four year colleges will
increase 7 percent this school year, double the rate of inflation. Student aid is not increasing fast
enough to plug the growing gap between tuition and family finances. In addition, there is a growing
number of older students entering college today. These students have families that they need to
support. I know, because I am a family man who has returned to school. I wish to finish my degree at
the Rochester Institute of Technology. The only ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Still, $15700 is a lot of dollars for an unemployed family man or woman with little or no income.

The Cost Of Living Factor

Though the Cost Of Living is not directly related to tuition it is still a major player in the decision
making process. Is it possible to maintain a family financial structure while paying for an
education? The cost of a mortgage, or rent, and other bills that are associated with living adds up to
many thousands of dollars per year. These costs in addition to what the tuition, books, and supplies
total are expected, and have to be dealt with.

The financial burden alone can seem over whelming to some. But let us consider what the total cost
of living and attending a four year private institution are. The Bureau of Census statistics for the
County of Monroe indicate quot;that the approximate average income for a family of four is $50964.
The poverty level for a family of four is approximately $15455 quot;. These are statistics calculated
for the 1995 calendar year. No newer statistics were available. With these statistics in mind we can
then determine the financial model we must follow. This model will determine what the total yearly
outlay a family of four must shoulder in order to send a person to RIT.

The Importance Of Christianity In The Roman Empire
Beginning 753 BC, the Romans were a polytheistic empire and placed a large importance on
religion. Roman religion was centered on the worship of multiple gods, and the belief that the gods
influenced nearly every aspect of life. Christianity, the belief in one God, was therefore not allowed
within the Roman empire. In addition to being a monotheistic religion, some Christian rituals were
often mistaken as cannibalism or incest. Nero, the emperor of Rome in 64 AD, further intensified
the hostility towards Christianity. After a widespread fire in the Imperial city, Nero, looking for
someone to blame, placed the blame on the Christians. Following this, many Christians in Rome
were subject to death. These aspects as well as the violation to the gods made Christianity
unacceptable and targeted in Rome. However, despite all of the opposition, Christianity eventually
became the main religion of the empire. The establishment of Christianity in the Roman Empire can
be accredited to Constantine I, who converted many Romans after the Battle of Milvian Bridge,
which led to the enactment of the Edict of Milan, and to Emperor Theodosius, who later made
Christianity the official religion of Rome.
Constantine I, son of Emperor Constantius, arose to occupy the imperial throne short after his father
s burial. Quickly being accustomed to the interests of his paternal inheritance. Being convinced,
however, that he needed some more powerful aid than his military forces could afford him, on the
War Is Kind
Research Paper Rough Draft Statistics show that over 1000 people were killed in the U.S. by police
in 2015, and at least 441 people have been killed so far this year alone. If we continue with this
trend, the numbers will keep growing each year. If the police force was created to protect citizens,
why are people living in constant fear of being killed every day? The police force, much like war, is
often glorified in the media, when in reality it does more bad for society than good. Stephen Crane
used his experiences in the war to write War Is Kind , and he gave America a perspective that many
hadn t considered before. He wasn t afraid to let people know that the war wasn t all people make it
out to be. While there will always be a desire... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
War is not kind to the soldiers in combat. War is not kind to the innocent civilians who reside in
the area of war. However, war is kind to the economy. Society likes to disregard the emotional and
physical trauma that those involved with the war deal with and focus only on the high points of
war. One might argue that war stimulates the economy and a strong army is necessary for
protection, but how far are we willing to go when the hands of young men and women s lives are
in our hands? We have to draw the line at some point, and in the interview with David Grossman,
he says that The truth is, we exist by virtue of killing . Stephen Crane tried to send out a similar
message when he said Point for them the virtue of slaughter, make plain to them the excellence of
killing . He was criticizing the way the military trains their soldiers, and how they are setting their
men up for trauma later on in

Essay about Individuality and Socialization
We as a human race have become a byproduct of our society. Through media, technology, and
social pressure, humans no longer run society, but it seems like we are run by society. The quote
from sociologist Peter Berger states Not only do people live in society but society lives in them
This statement is referring to a form of social control were groups and the people in those groups
conform to society partially knowingly and partially as a reflection based on dominant social
expectations. As I further explain Berger s statement I will explain how individuality, identity, and
freedom fit in to such a predetermined future. Though identity suggests to an aspect of individuality
it is really a result of socialization. Identity is how we see... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
While all people conform to society to some degree we all develop aspects of individuality from our
different experiences. Individuality is what makes the human race as successful as it is. It adds
creativity and change in an otherwise idle society. Without it there would be no change.
While all these characteristics of individuality are true there are pressures from society that still
eliminate total individuality. Ones individuality is based on pressures of society. A woman will
develop individual traits characteristic of a women, such as physical beauty and motherhood. A
man will develop certain traits characteristic of a man, such as sports or risky behavior. An
individual s races or religions can also have an influence on what a person s individual traits will
be. While most humans have a certain amount of individuality, Berger s statement still applies,
society lives in us all and there is little an individual can do to manipulate it. Freedom has a large
range of meaning. The encyclopedia Britannica defines freedom as the quality or state of being free,
and the absence of necessity, coercion, or constraint in choice or action (Britannica). In the
American society there is a lot of emphasis on freedom, and the right to be free, but one must
question to what extent we are truly free .
General Electric
Mini Case Study
Can GE Remake Itself as a Digital Firm? General Electric (GE) is the world s largest diversified
manufacturer. Fortune named GE America s Most Admired Company in 1998, 1999, and 2000. Jack
Welch, GE s CEO and Chairman since 1981, is often cited as the most admired CEO in the United
States. Headquartered in Fairfield, Connecticut, the company consists of 20 units, including
Appliances, Broadcasting (NBC), Capital, Medical Systems, and Transportation Systems. With the
acquisition of Honeywell, announced in October 2000, GE became a company of $155 billion in
revenue and 460,000 employees in 100 countries. Despite GE s size and old economy businesses,

Reiner ordered GE units to come back with alternative approaches that enhance value to the
customer and reduce total costs. The Internet initiative started by changing GE s culture at the very
top. GE s internal newsletters and many of Welch s memos became available only online. To give
blue collar workers access to the Net, GE installed computer kiosks on factory floors. One thousand
top managers and executives, including Welch (who also had to take typing lessons), were assigned
young, skilled mentors to work with them three to four hours per week to make them comfortable
with the Web. They had to become able to evaluate their competitors Web sites and to use the Web in
other beneficial ways. Every GE employee was given training. Welch announced in 2000, that GE
would reduce administrative expenses by 30 to 50 percent (around $10 billion) within 18 months
through use of the Internet. Many projects came out of the initiative. For example GE Medical
Systems, which manufactures diagnostic imaging systems such as CAT scanners and mammography
equipment, identified its DYB threat as aggregators, such as WebMD, which offered unbiased
information on competing products as well as selling them. GE products on these sites looked like
just another commodity. The unit s major response was iCenter,
Pygmalion Essay
The distinctive voices, characteristic in any text/s, can be deconstructed to develop an understanding
which may validate, challenge or disprove society s values and/or beliefs within a given context.
Language, in all its forms, is a human thing, and allows the traces or imprints of human use, not
inherently but in its use. A text may promote obvious distinction between the authorial voice and
character s viewpoint. This can be seen in the play of Pygmalionin by George Bernard shawand the
film Pleasantville directed by Gary Ross. Both of these texts show distinctive voices through
dialogue the use of dialogue which highlights the relationships and differences between characters.

Another distinctive voice in Pymalion is that Henry Higgins . is an important character in the
play as he is Eliza s tutor. He Is an expert in phonetics and is very proud of his skill and his ability
to transform Eliza into a lady. However he fails to follow the rules of social conduct when they
are out in public. This is evident in Act III when he was rude to the hostess saying: fearful bore
for you this sort of thing. Forgive my part in it . However he is most rough with Eliza. His voice
is characterised by the severe tone, high volume and use of profanity or insults. He also uses a
harsh tone, particularly when talking to Eliza e.g You won my bet! You! Presumptuous insect!/ I
won it. In this quote he uses exclamations, repetition and italics to show his emotion. This quote
uses exclamations and repetition of you to emphasise his emotion. He also uses the metaphor of
Eliza as an insect to communicate his anger but also create the sense that she is small and
meaningless. This quote shows his inability to acknowledge that eliza worked hard for the bet.
Damn Mrs.pearce ; and damn the coffee; and damn you: and wildly damn my own folly in having
lavished my hard earned knowledge and the treasure of my regard and intimacy on a heartless
guttersnipe . At this point Mr.Higgins has truly lost his temper. This is shown in the repetition of the
curse damn . He has been hurt by what Eliza has said because he believes that she is ungrateful.

Nanocrystalline Materials Essay
Introduction To explain nanocrystalline materials, it should have been explained that nano
concept at first. Nanostructures are relatively new and interesting subject to investigate, they are
in a scale which is between 0 100 nanometers (1 nanometer, nm is equal to 10 9 meter). There are
some types of nanostructured materials such as lamellar (1 dimensional), filamentary (2
dimensional) and crystallites (3 dimensional). If grains of the material are made up of crystals,
then nanocrystalline materials term is what they are called. In this case, nanocrystalline materials
have grains which are the size of 100 nm typically. An example of nanocrystalline material of
SnO2 is imaged with STM as seen in Fig. 1 [1] and SEM image of nanocrystalline diamond thin
films as seen in Fig. 2. [2] Fig. 1. STM image of nanocrystalline SnO2 [1] Fig. 2. SEM image of
nanocrystalline diamond thin films. [2] In nanocrystalline materials there are numerous superior
properties which actually are very useful and promising about future works and applications. The
reason for the superior properties is that nanocrystalline materials have very high number of atoms at
their grain boundaries which are in nanometer scale. Some of the properties that can be enhanced
and increased by making nanocrystalline materials rather than the coarse grained materials are
higher strength, higher hardness, increased diffusivity, increased mechanical properties and so on
[3]. This is why people have studied in
