Tutorial-5 Solution

The document contains a series of questions related to the analysis of 3-phase transmission lines, focusing on calculations such as sending end voltage, percentage regulation, and transmission efficiency for various scenarios. It includes specific parameters for different transmission line configurations and requests for determining line characteristics using nominal and generalized circuit models. The questions address both theoretical and practical aspects of electrical engineering related to power transmission.

Tutorial-5 EEC-208

Question 1. An overhead 3-phase transmission line delivers 5000 kW at 22 kV at

0.8 p.f. lagging. The resistance and reactance of each conductor are 4 Ω and 6 Ω,
respectively. Determine: (i) Sending end voltage (ii) percentage regulation (iii)
transmission efficiency.
Question 2. A 3-phase, 50Hz, 150 km line has a resistance, inductive reactance and
capacitive shunt admittance of 0.1 Ω, 0.5 Ω and 3 × 10−6 S per km per phase. If the
line delivers 50 MW at 110 kV and 0.8 p.f. lagging, determine the sending end
voltage and current. Assume a nominal π circuit for the line.
Question 3. Determine the efficiency and regulation of a 3-phase, 100 km, 50 Hz
transmission line delivering 20 MW at a p.f. of 0.8 lagging and 66 kV to a balanced
load. The conductors are of copper, each having resistance 0.1 ohm per km, 1.5 cm
outside dia, spaced equilaterally 2 metres between centres. Neglect leakage
reactance and use (i) nominal-T model.
Question 4. The generalized circuit constants of a 3-phase, 220kV rated voltage,
medium-length transmission line are:
A = D = 0.936 + j0.016 = 0.9360.98
B = 35.5 + j138 =142.076.4 
C = (- 5.18+ j914) 10 -6 
If the load at the receiving end is 50 MW at 220 kV with a power factor of 0.9
lagging, then find the line-to-line sending end voltage.
Question 5. For a 400 km long transmission line, the series impedance is (0.0 + j
0.5) Ω / km and the shunt admittance is (0.0 + j 5.0) μmho/km. Find the magnitude
of the series impedance (in Ω) of the equivalent π circuit of the transmission line.
Question 6. A single circuit 50 Hz, 3-phase long transmission line has the following
parameters per km: R = 0.2 Ω, L = 1.3 mH and C = 0.01 µF. The voltage at the
receiving end is 132 kV. Determine the characteristic impedance, propagation
constant, attenuation and phase constants per km of the line.
