SECTION I (50 MARKS)
Answer all the questions in this section in the spaces provided.
1. Evaluate without using mathematical tables or calculators,
2 log10 5 – ½ log10 64 + 2 log10 40. (3mks)

2. By using completing square method, solve for x in 4x2 – 3x – 6 = 0 (3mks)

3. Without using a calculator or a mathematical table, simplify as far as possible: (3mks)

4. Find to the nearest shilling, the accumulated amount after 1½ years if ksh. 760 000 is deposited in a
bank which pays interest at 16% p.a. compounded quarterly. (3 mks)

5. (a) Expand and simplify the binomial expression (2 + x)5 upto the term in x3. (2mks)

(b) Use your expression to estimate (1.97)5 correct to 4 s.f. (2mks)

6. In the fig. below line CD = 4cm, line DT = 8cm and AB = 6cm. AT and CT are straight lines meeting
at point T.

7. Find the relative error in the area of a parallelogram whose base is 8cm and height 5cm. (3mks)

8. Maize flour and millet flour were mixed. If the maize flour costs sh.60 per kilogram and millet flour
sh.90 per kilogram, find the ratio of maize flour to millet flour that gives a mixture costing sh.85 per
kilogram. (3 mks)

9. Two taps A and B can each fill an empty tank in 3 hours and 2 hours respectively. A drainage tap R
can empty the full tank in 6 hours; taps A and R are opened for 5 hours then closed.
(a) Determine the fraction of the tank is still empty (2 mks)

(b) Find how long it would take to fill the remaining fraction of the tank if all
the three taps are opened (2 mks)

10. Given the points P(-6, -3), Q(-2, -1) and R(6, 3) express PQ and QR as column vectors. Hence show
that the points P, Q and R are collinear. (3mks)

11. A quantity V is partly constant and partly varies inversely as the square of W. If W = 2 when V = 14
and W = 3 when V = 9. write an equation connecting V and W and hence find V when W = 6.(3mks)

12. In the triangle XYZ below, find the angle ZXY. (3mks)

13. An arithmetic progression whose first term is 2 and whose nth term is 32 has the sum of its first n
terms equal to 557. Find n. (3mks)

17. The table below shows income tax rates.

An employee earns a monthly basic salary of sh. 30,000 and is also entitled to taxable allowances
amounting to Ksh. 10,480.
(a) Calculate the gross income tax (4mks)

(b) The employee is entitled to a personal tax relief of Ksh. 800 per month. Determine the net tax.
(2mks)

(c) If the employee received a 50% increase in his total income, calculate the parentage increase on
the income tax. (4mks)

18. In the figure below, vector OP = p and OR =r. Vector OS = 2r and OQ = 3/2p.

a) Express in terms of p and r


(i) QR (1 mk)

(ii) PS (1 mk)

b) The lines QR and PS intersect at K such that QK = m QR and PK = n PS, where m and n are
scalars. Find two distinct expressions for OK in terms of p,r,m and n. Hence find the values
of m and n. (5 mks)

c) State the ratio PK:KS (1 mk)

19. Three variables p, q and r are such that p varies directly as q and inversely as the square of r.
a. When p = 18, q = 24 and r = 4.
Find p when q = 30 and r = 10. (4mks)

b. Express q in terms of p and r. (1mk)

c. If p is increased by 20% and r is decreased by 10% find:


i. A simplified expression for the change in q in terms of p and r. (3mks)

ii. The percentage change in q. (3mks)

20. Two identical baskets A and B contain white and red balls. Basket A contains 7 white balls and 3 red
balls while basket B contains 5 white balls and 5 red balls. A bag is chosen at random and 2 balls
picked from it one after another without replacement.
(a) Illustrate this information using a tree diagram. (2mks)

(b) Find the probability that:-


(i) The 2 balls picked are of the same colour. (2mks)

(ii) The two balls picked are of different colours. (2mks)

(iii) Only one of the balls picked is red. (2mks)

(iv) At least one white ball is picked. (2mks)

b) Given that RT = 7 cm and ST = 9 calculate to 3 significant figures:

24. The fourth, seventh and sixteenth term of an arithmetic progression are in geometric progression. The
sum of the first six terms of the arithmetic progression is 12.
Determine the
(a) First term and the common difference of the arithmetic progression. (6mks)

(c) Sum of the first six terms of the geometric progression. (2mks)
