Geometry of Twisted Yarn (Idealized Helical Yarn Structure)
R Yarn radius,
r radius of cylinder containing
helical path of particular
fibre(cm),
T Turns per unit length,(1/cm),
h Length of one turn of twist (cm),
α Surface angle of twist (degrees),
l Length of fibre in one turn of
twist at radius ‘r’
θ Corresponding helical twist at
radius ‘r’ (degrees)
L- Length of fibre in one turn of
twist, at radius R (cm)
Assumptions
1. The yarn is circular in cross section.
2. It is considered to be composed of a series of concentric
cylinder of differing radii.
3. Each fibre follows a uniform helical path around one of the
concentric cylinder.
4. A fibre at centre will follow a straight line path of yarn axis,
but going out from centre its helix angle gradually increases.
5. Fibres packing density in the yarn is constant
6. The yarn is considered to be made up of large number of
filaments
Twist Contraction: Theoretical Calculation
The magnitude of twist contraction be can define the in two ways: -
Length of zero twisted yarn
1.Contraction, Cy, =
Length of Twisted yarn
2. Retraction, Ry = length of zero twisted yarn − length of twisted yarn
length of zero twisted yarn
Cy = 1
(1 − Ry )
Cy = 1 to
Ry= 0 to 1
Fibres in twisted yarn Distribution of fiber lengths.
Consider twisted yarn of length
−
=h
Zero twist yarn length = l
Where, = mean length of filaments in the length h of twisted yarn
No. of filaments crossing unit area perpendicular to the filament axis = n
No.of filaments crossing between between radii r and r+dr at an angle θ = dn
dn= n 2πr. dr . cos θ ……………………(I)
