General Applications
The following applications apply to typical WU type BOPs.

Side outlets up to 4-1/16” in size can be provided beneath each set of rams on either or both
sides of WU BOPs. Side outlets can be studded, flange, or clamp hub.

Flanges conform to API standard 6A and/or 16A. Hubs conform to API 16A or applicable
standards. Type 6BX flanges are standard for 10,000 and 15,000 psi working pressures and
for 5,000 psi for 13-5/8” and larger bore BOPs.

Hydraulic control connections for operation of rams and bonnets are 1” NPT. There are 2
connections for each set of rams. Wedgelock connections are 1/2” NPT.

The dimensions table does not include spacers between rams for double ram models. WU
BOPs with spacers to clear tool joints available upon request.

Large bore shearing bonnets are available for shearing high-strength pipe.

All WOM WU BOPs are suitable for H2S service as standard.

The WU BOP can be outfitted with blind rams, shearing/blind rams, pipe, casing, or tubing
rams, or variable-bore rams.

Rams for WU BOP

Introduction
Rams for blowout preventers must form an instantaneous seal around the pipe and against
each other to seal off well pressure. The design of the WU BOP includes ram packers that
are self-feeding and contain a reserve of rubber that will assure an enduring seal under all
conditions. Ram packers are locked in place so that they cannot be dislodged by well flow. The
rubber of the packers is bonded to steel plates to confine it to the sealing area.

WOM sells rams for WU BOPs to suit the appropriate size of pipe, drill collar, or kelly.
Stainless steel rams and offset rams for multiple completions can also be purchased. WOM
also sells shear rams for pipe shearing in case of emergency.

Ram Packing

Ram geometry guides the pipe to align with

the well bore.

Self-feeding ram packing seals around the

pipe before the rams are fully closed.
Steel retainer plates prevent extrusion of
packing.

A generous reserve of packing is fed by

additional ram movement to provide a seal
after considerable wear.

Types of Rams
WU BOP Pipe Rams
WU BOP pipe rams are available to fit a wide
variety of tubing, drill pipe, drill collar, and
casing sizes. All rams are suitable for H2S
service per NACE specifications. WU BOP ram Packer
packers are self-feeding with a large reserve of
Ram
elastomer to ensure a long-lasting seal under
all conditions. Ram packers lock into place and Figure 9: View of Pipe Ram Assembly

cannot be dislodged by well flow.

WU BOP Variable Bore Rams
WU BOP variable bore rams can be used to
seal on a range of pipe. WOM’s WU BOP vari-
able bore ram packers contain steel reinforcing
inserts similar to those in the annular BOP
packer. The inserts rotate inward when the
rams are closed so the steel provides support Packer
for the rubber which seals against the pipe.

Figure 10: View of Variable Bore Ram Assembly

WU BOP Shearing Blind Rams
Shearing blind rams (SBR) can be used as blind
rams during normal operations, they are
specifically designed to shear the pipe in the
hole then bend the lower section of the sheared
pipe to allow the rams to close and seal. Top Seal

One set of WU BOP variable bore rams can be Side Packer

used to seal on a range of pipe. WOM’s WU BOP
variable bore ram packers contain steel
reinforcing inserts similar to those in the
annular BOP packer. The inserts rotate inward
when the rams are closed so the steel provides Side Packer
support for the rubber which seals against the Lower Ram
Blade Packer

pipe. The large area of the blade face seal reduc-

es pressure on the rubber and increases service
life. WOM SBRs can cut pipe numerous times Figure 11: View of Shearing Blind Ram Assembly
without damage to the cutting edge.

Physical Data
A. Lubricants

1. Ram lubricant, (P/N 705725 Chemola #681 BOP oil) or a water resistant
non- petroleum base grease.

2. Thread lubricant - which meets the requirements of the latest revision of API
Bulletin 5A or Moly #503, ( 4 lb. can).

3. Multi-purpose lubricant or CB-2 Super Lith multi purpose grease.

4. Multi-purpose lubricant or grease for cold weather operation.

5. Hydraulic operating system: Store with Marston Bentley Preservation Fluid. For
standard operation, use a fresh water lubricant that forms a true solution rather
than an emulsion when mixed with water and/or antifreeze.

6. Seals and sealing surfaces - Hydraulic Oil (10-15 weight).

B. Lifting and Handling

1. Lift BOP assemblies only with slings appropriately rated for the maximum weight
of the BOP.

2. Lift ram assemblies by installing a lifting eye in the threaded preparation in the
ram.

3. Handle all other subassemblies using appropriately rated slings.

Optional Hydraulic Lock Mechanism

An optional hydraulic lock mechanism,
used in place of locking screws, locks the
rams in the closed position by remote
control. It continues to hold rams closed,
even though control pressure is released,
until unlocking pressure is applied. Release
is positive because the design causes more
unlocking than locking force. The hydraulic
ram lock is essential in underwater drilling
and is often used on land in place of slower
acting manually operated locking screws. Figure 15: View of Hydraulic Lock Mechanism

F. Hang-Off Weights

Hang-off-weights are estimated capacities with hardened top corners of the hang-
off-rams. This enables the rams to dig into the tool joint and provide superior
hang-off capacity while still meeting NACE requirements.

Hydraulic Control System

Figure 18: View of Hydraulic Control System Ram Close Circuit in Red
Ram Open Circuit in Green

Hydraulic Circuits
The ram close hydraulic circuit is shown in red on the above caption. The closing ratio (the
ratio of well pressure to operating piston pressure needed to close rams) is 7:1. The ram
closing pressure also serves to open the bonnets for ram change. When the bonnet bolts are
unscrewed and closing pressure is applied, pressure pushes the ram inward and at the same
time moves the bonnet away from the preventer body. Even though the ram moves inward,
the bonnet stroke is sufficient to bring the ram into the clear for handling. An eyebolt is
furnished on each end of the Preventer body which can be screwed into the top of each ram
for lifting.

The ram open hydraulic circuit is shown in green on the above caption. Ram opening
pressure also serves to close the bonnets. Hydraulic control pressure draws the
bonnets tightly against the preventer body; bolts serve only to hold bonnets closed. An
important feature of the Type “WU” hydraulic system is that the rams are pulled back close
to the bonnets before the bonnets begin moving toward the Preventer body. Because of this,
rams never interfere with pipe in the hole or otherwise obstruct the vertical bore. Rams
may be changed, in an emergency, when the well is blowing, thereby increasing the security
provided by the preventers.

Pressure Required
The rated continuous working pressure for the Type “WU” BOP operating system is 1,500
psi. Pressures of 300 to 500 psi normally provide satisfactory operation. Pressures in excess
of 1,500 psi may be required in 10,000 and 15,000 psi preventers to close the rams against
high well pressures. In emergencies, pressures up to 4,500 psi can be applied to the hydraulic
controls. For optimum seal life, the applied hydraulic pressure should be limited to 1,500 psi,
especially when it is customary to hold “ram open” pressure on preventers
continuously. When a 3,000 psi accumulator is used to store maximum energy for preventer
operation, a pressure regulator should be used to control pressure applied to the preventer.

Operating Fluids
Light hydraulic oil is the recommended operating fluid for Type “WU” preventers. Any type
is satisfactory except fuel oil, which causes rubber seals to swell and deteriorate. The use
of water as an operating medium is satisfactory provided soluble oil is added to prevent
corrosion and antifreeze is added when necessary. Should an emergency require the use of
drilling mud pressure to operate a Preventer, the Preventer should be torn down, thoroughly
cleaned and all seals carefully checked for excessive wear as soon as practical thereafter.

Hydraulic Operating System Requirements

1. Use a fresh water lubricant in the hydraulic system that forms a true solution rather
than an emulsion when mixed with water and/or antifreeze.

2. Refer to following page for fluid requirements.

3. Normal pressure for the hydraulic operating system is 1500 psi.

4. Maximum pressure to shear drill pipe is 2800 psi.

5. The maximum hydraulic operating pressure limit is 3000 psi to operate rams.

Torque Installation
All dimensions are in inches unless otherwise noted.

Torque installation of pipe fittings is not a recommended practice. Thread taper and quality, different port and fitting materials,
plating thickness and types, varying thread sealants, orientation and other factors reduce the reliability of a torqued connection.
If torque installation is required, refer to the following table for suggested toque values.

Options on BOPs
A. Boosters
WU BOP Boosters are designed to extend the life cycle of the ram packers, while
enhancing the shearing force of the BOP. WU BOP Boosters come equipped with a
booster piston stop (7) that provides the same blow as the BOP’s operating piston,
therefore, the standard shearing lock mechanism can be mounted on the exterior end
of the WU BOP Boosters.

B. Large Bore
The Large Bore bonnet is an option over the standard bonnet if there is a need to in
crease shearing force of the BOP. The Large Bore bonnet has a larger cavity than the
standard bonnet and does not have a separate operating cylinder. Instead the
operating piston sits directly in the larger bonnet cavity for increased area and
subsequent force of BOP.

C. Seal Carrier
A Bonnet Seal Carrier may be mounted onto any WU BOP size and is available as an
alternative to the regular bonnet seal (2). The seal carrier holds 2 seals with one seal
sitting inside the bore of the WU BOP Body and the other seal positioned inside the
bore of the intermediate flange. WU BOPs equipped with seal carrier require less
torque to the bonnet bolts.

For more information regarding boosters, large bore and/or carrier seals
please contact your WOM representative.

Installation Recommendations
The Type WU Blowout Preventer is completely assembled and tested before leaving WOM,
hence the installation at the rig is relatively simple. The following points should be checked
as the preventer is being placed in the drilling rig hookup.

1. Carefully clean and inspect all ring 6. Attach operating system lines to the
gaskets and grooves. Do not use wire open and close side of the “WU”
brushes or other abrasive materials as preventer. Check the operating system,

5. The capacity and pressure rating of the

accumulators or pressure pumps must
be sufficient to close the Preventers
quickly at a pressure equal to the
maximum working pressure of the
preventers. A rig may have the best
possible BOP, but if the operating unit
is insufficient to operate them, then the
entire unit is useless when subjected to
high pressure.

Operation & Maintenance

Care & Maintenance

Daily or Trip Care: All blowout Preventers should be operated daily. Many owners require
that they be operated at the beginning of each tour. Blind rams should be operated every time pipe
is out of the hole. Pipe rams should not be closed except when pipe is in the preventer, to avoid
extruding the packer. If operation of the rams requires more than 500 psi control pressure when
there is not pressure in the well bore, the cause should be determined and remedial measures taken.

Care Between Wells: Whenever a preventer is removed from a drilling hookup, it should be
carefully cleaned, and the rams should be removed, cleaned, inspected, and lubricated.
Also, the ram bore should be cleaned, inspected and lubricated. Any burrs or galled spots
should be smoothed. Rams may be stored in the preventer or separately. The operating system
should be thoroughly flushed to remove sediment or foreign material. Type “WU” Preventers
should be transported with rams closed and locking screws run in to avoid accidental bending of
locking screws.

Periodic Overhaul: Annually, or more often depending on the type of service, a preventer
should be completely disassembled and all parts cleaned, inspected and reconditioned or replaced.
All rubber seals should be replaced except ram packings which should be replaced according
to condition. Any metal parts which show damage, such as scored pistons or cylinders, should be
replaced or repaired.

Preventer parts in some cases can be repaired; however, this should be done only at WOM
repair shops or under supervision of WOM personnel. After the preventer is rebuilt, the body
should be tested to maximum rated working pressure and the operating system to 5,000 psi.
The Type WU Blowout Preventer has been designed especially for ease of field servicing and
reconditioning. Ram change pistons and cylinders, and operating pistons and cylinders can be
quickly replaced on location, providing a completely rebuilt bonnet assembly.

Lubricants: Ram Lubricant: Any water resistant grease or heavy oil can be used as a ram and ram
bore lubricant. Thread Lubricant: Metallic Zinc Base Grease should be used.

Testing: At regular intervals, weekly if possible, the complete drilling hookup and choke manifold
should be tested for pressure holding ability and correct operation. The blowout preventer operating
unit and all control piping should also be pressure tested and inspected. Pipe rams should not be
closed except when pipe is in the preventer, to avoid extruding the packing.

Storage: When a preventer is put in storage, the rams should be removed and the preventer
thoroughly cleaned, all moving parts greased, and all machined surfaces oiled and greased,
particularly the ram bores and the flange ring grooves. Preferably, the preventer should be provided
with flange protectors. Preventers in storage should have the operating system full of lightweight
oil. Packed rams should not be stored out of doors.

Spare Parts: It is recommended that spare pipe rams plus replacement packers and top seals for
all sizes of rams being used be kept at the rig. There may be other spare parts that are recommended to
support a year of operation, which depend on environmental conditions where the BOP is installed. Please
contact WOM for a specific list of recommended spares.

Operation & Maintenance

Cold Weather Operation

The operation of the Type WU Blowout preventer in sub-zero temperatures requires special
precautions not normally necessary in the more temperate climates such as that of the Gulf
Coast area. Some of these precautions are:

1. The preventer should be kept as warm as possible as the rams are susceptible to
freezing in place since water-based drilling fluids freeze quickly and solidly when they
come to rest at such temperatures.

2. Lubricants should be selected on their low temperature properties since some

lubricants congeal at sub-zero temperatures and prevent the operations which they
were intended to facilitate.

3. Avoid impact loads on rubber parts as they become very brittle and may shatter.

4. Use metallic hose in lieu of rubber hose due to rubber embrittlement.

5. Light hydraulic oil should be used in the Type WU hydraulic system since some
medium-weight oils become semi-solid at temperatures in the neighborhood of fifty
degrees below zero.

6. Keep the equipment clean and free of water-based drilling fluids where at all possible.

7. Operate the equipment as frequently as possible.

8. Water is satisfactory operating fluid provided a soluble oil is used for corrosion
protection and sufficient antifreeze is added to prevent freezing.

Operational Characteristics
Sealing Characteristics
Ram block packers and top seal was evaluated for following characteristics to seal wellbore
pressure

1. Ram block closure against zero initial wellbore pressure:

Testing has confirmed that the BOP requires the recommended minimum hydraulic closing
pressure to close and seal when there is no initial well bore pressure. The required closing
pressure increases as the well bore pressure increases due to the effects of the well pressure
acting against the operating piston.

2. Ram block closure against elevated wellbore pressure:

Testing has confirmed that the BOP requires an increase in hydraulic pressure as the
wellbore increases. With lower differential pressures across the ram block it is possible for
the well pressure to force the BOP open if the hydraulic closing pressure is zero. This is not
the case when the differential pressure across the ram block is greater. The manual locking
feature should therefore be used when the BOP is closed to prevent opening.
(NOTE: Hydraulic operating pressure should not exceed recommended maximum hydraulic pressure)

Fatigue Life
The sealing reliability and life cycle were qualified by conducting an API 16A operational
characteristics fatigue test. API 16A fatigue test consists of 546 close and open cycles of the
blowout preventer. A low and high pressure wellbore pressure test is conducted on every
seventh closure. The ram block successfully completed all 78 wellbore pressure tests during
the 546 close/open cycle fatigue test.

Stripping
A Stripping test was performed to ensure the functionality of the system and components in
a BOP during stripping of drill pipe through the wellbore during the closed condition of BOP.
This test confirmed the ability of the ram block packer to seal-off annulas pressure while drill
pipe was running through the ram blocks.

Shearing
Shearing Blind Rams have the capability to shear drill pipe as per API-5D and seal in a
single operator closure. Once the rams have successfully sheared the pipe, the rams continue
to close. The upper sheared pipe above the rams is upper fish, and is pushed by upper ram
into a cavity between the upper and lower rams. This cavity is provided to store the upper fish
and ensures that the upper fish does not interfere with the closing of the ram blocks. Below
the lower ram block, the sheared is lower fish, is displaced by the lower shear ram block. This
is accomplished by bending the lower fish over a shoulder, clearing the lower ram block to the
blade packer. Shear rams block fold over the lower drill pipe fish to clear the sealing area and
house the lower fish between the fold-over shoulder and the bottom of the upper ram block.
As the ram block closes, the side and packer seals are energized and seals wellbore annulus.

Hang-off
Successfully passed API-16A, drill pipe and tubing hang-off capability. Evaluated ram blocks
for hang-off and capability to maintain wellbore pressure integrity.

Ram Block (Packer) Access

Testing has been performed to determine the ability of the BOP to undergo repeated ram
block packer changes without affecting operating characteristics. The test has shown that
the rams were accessed and performed wellbore pressure test after every 20th ram access
cycle, a total of 200 ram access cycles without failure of the sealing or locking mechanism
were evaluated.

Ram Block Locking System

Manual locking system requires the BOP operator to be hydraulically closed. When closing
the ram, operating piston movement is visible through the lock housing. When the ram
blocks are closed, the housing lock screw must be rotated manually in clockwise direction.
The lock screw must be in contact at the end of the operating piston. This will prevent the
operating piston from opening when hydraulic pressure is removed and annulas pressure is
achieved.

Temperature Verification
Successfully passed API-16A, temperature testing requirements for elastomer and seal off
the pressure at extreme temperature, at low and high pressure tests with recommended
hydraulic operator pressure.
