Riddle 1
A farmer returns from the market, where he bought a goat, a cabbage and a wolf (what a crazy
market). On the way home he must cross a river. His boat is small and won’t fit more than one of his
purchases. He cannot leave the goat alone with the cabbage (because the goat would eat it), nor he
can leave the goat alone with the wolf (because the goat would be eaten).
How can the farmer get everything on the other side in this river crossing puzzle ?
Answer:
The first step that must be taken is to let the goat go across the river, as any other t ac ons will result
in the goat or cabbage being eaten. When the farmer returns to the original side, he has the choice
of taking either the wolf or the cabbage across next.

If he takes the wolf across, he would have to return to get the cabbage, resul ng in the wolf ea ng
the goat. If he takes the cabbage across second, he will need to return, to get the wolf, resul ng in
the cabbage being eaten by the goat. The dilemma is solved by taking the wolf (or the cabbage) over
and bringing the goat back: Now he can take the cabbage (or the wolf) over, and finally return to
fetch the goat.

Summary of his ac ons in the following steps:

 Take the goat over

 Return empty-handed

 Take the wolf or the cabbage over

 Return with the goat

 Take whichever wasn’t taken in step 3 over

Ar cle Wri ng

1. ‘Rules are meant to be observed in spirit not only in le er’. Explain what you understand by this
statement. Write an ar cle in about 120-150 words on how the rules can be effec vely implemented
in the society and ci zens can follow it in the true spirit. You may use any of the ideas given in the
box. Follow the stages involved in the process approach to wri ng.
a) Use it in the context of gender (protec on of women’s rights/dowry/female infan cide, etc.).
b) In the context of environment (cu ng of trees/poaching/pollu on).
c) Smoking in public/following traffic rules, etc. (add cartoons with fun facts, for example parking in
front of no parking sign), d) In the context of value and self discipline.
Answer:
Recently the concept ‘The le er versus the spirit of the law (rule)’ has been gaining importance in
society. It explains the rela onship between the law, social norms and fairness in society. We are
going to highlight a scenario in which the le er of the law or the spirit of the law may be breached.
We hypothesize that it may be unfair to violate the spirit of the law,, even if the le er of the law has
hot been violated.

Even in the context of environment rules are to be observed in spirit but not in le er. Government
has brought many rules to demote deforesta on. The Foresta on Conserva on Act of 1980 aimed at
slowing dowp the deforesta on caused by the .

conversion of forest lands to non-forest purposes. But with a growing popula on, we are running out
of land to grow crops and keep livestock. For building mul purpose irriga on projects forests have to
be cut down in large areas of land. In this context the rules against deforesta on are to be violated.
Rapid industrialisa on, agricultural moderna sa on, burgeoning popula on and other factors are
combining in many less developed countries, to damage the natural environment so severely.

Economy and Economics are closely related issues. Development is not possible without adequate
emphasis on environmental protec on. Development and environment are complementary to each
other, helping each other to grow and antagonist terms because one hinders and spoils the other.
The more the development, the more the degrada on of environment.

The more the development, the more the deforesta on. But without these industries, there will be
no development in means of transporta on, revolu on, in communica on and network. Thus there
is a conflict between environmentalists and developers. The developers say there is no development
without environmental degrada on.

On the other hand, the environmentalists allege that the developers are destroying the environment.
Thus in the course of development we should follow the rules of environmental protec on in spirit
but not in le er. That does not mean we have the right to destroy forests by taking up deforesta on
measures.

We have to make up the loss of deforesta on by means of afforesta on or reforesta on methods. In

short we have to grow what we have cut. Thus the development and environment are balanced and
they lead to prosperity of the country.

Ques on 2.
You have read and experienced how the li le seagull learnt to fly and then the story of the
mysterious black aeroplane. You have also read the story, ‘All about a dog’. How were these
experiences? You may have also experienced some such situa ons in your life: learning to ride on a
bicycle, watching a cat or any other animal trying to jump over the wall, your own bi er experience
in a difficult situa on, etc. Think of such an experience and write down the points and develop the
ideas into an outline. Write your experiences like a short story.
Answer:

Story Wri ng

I was then a 12 year old boy. I did not know how to ride a bicycle. All my friends, brothers and my
cousins can ride a bicycle. Even the li le children younger to me can ride a bicycle. Some of my
classmates can even ride scooters. This made me shy of myself. My friends and classmates used to
make fun of me.
They used to humiliate me for not learning how to ride a bicycle. Some of my friends used to suggest
me that I should learn riding a bicycle as early as possible. They used to encourage me by saying that
it is not a hard task. They promised me they would help me to learn to ride a bicycle.

But 1 am afraid of riding bicycle. I had a feeling that I would fall down and incur injuries. I am afraid
of heavy vehicles such as lorries, buses and cars. I would be scared of speeding vehicles. I would
always have a feeling they might hit me or run over me. I am not confident of myself.

But one day during summer holidays, my friends forced me to learn riding a bicycle. They threatened
that they would cease to be my friends if I didn’t learn how to ride. They gave me confidence by
ci ng so many examples. They told me how even small birds could fly great heights if they were
scared of falling down from such great heights. Even animals and birds threw their li le offsprings
out of huts and dwellings and forced them to fly and run on their own.

Thus they tried to build confidence in me. They tried to explain to me how difficult it would be if we
don’t know how to ride a bicycle / vehicle. In this world of dash and dart the life will be impossible
without knowing how to drive. There words soothened my fear. I gathered confidence from their
words. 1 expressed my acceptance finally. Three of my friends made me learn how to get on and off
the bicycle. They made me wear knee and elbow pads.

They selected a flat, smooth, comfortable and low traffic area. They brought a cycle with training
wheels. The seat of the cycle is very low so that I was able to balance by stopping myself with my
feet. Very soon I was able to learn pedalling, dismount the bike, how to balance, how to change
direc ons etc. Three days con nuously they helped me to learn cycling. Day by day I perfected
cycling. On the third day I was able to ride on my own. Now I can ride the bicycle with a lot of
precision and perfec on.
