Thinking about food science as a career? Well, food science is not one single field. There are five
main areas of study. Let’s take a look at each area in turn.
1. FOOD MICROBIOLOGISTS study how very small organisms can affect our food. These organ-
isms can make food healthier for us. Or they can make it unhealthy. They can make it taste good
or taste bad. Food safety and food quality are very important in the food industry.
2. FOOD ENGINEERS AND FOOD PROCESSORS work together to improve the taste, color, and
safety of food and meals. They try to make our food taste better and last longer.
3. FOOD CHEMISTS study the biochemicals in food. Most food comes from plants or animals, so
this an important area. Studying biochemicals can help make our food more digestible, or easier to
eat.
4. NUTRITIONISTS study the nutrients in food that can help our bodies. Foods with a lot of nutri-
ents have advantages for our health. Food companies are very interested because many customers
only want to buy healthy food.
5. SENSORY ANALYSTS study how we see, taste, touch, and smell food. Companies want to know
what we like and don’t like. This information is very good for business!
