Department of Mechanical Engineering

20MEPC602 – HEAT TRANSFER

Assignment - 5
III Year Mech, VIth Semester Mechanical A- Section

1. List out the applications of boiling and condensation process?

2. Distinguish between boiling and condensation.
3. Define pool boiling?
4. List out the characteristics of Nucleate boiling?
5. Compare Nucleate boiling and film boiling.

6. Explain the various regimes of pool boiling of water at atmospheric pressure with a neat
sketch.

7. With the help of neat sketches describe the flow boiling process and explain different
regimes of flow boiling.

8. Water is boiled at the rate of 24 kg/h in a polished copper pan, 300 mm in diameter, at
atmospheric pressure. Assuming nucleate boiling conditions, Calculate the temperature of the
bottom surface of the pan.

9. Water is boiling on a horizontal tube whose wall temperature is maintained ct 15°C above the
saturation temperature of water. Calculate the nucleate boiling heat transfer coefficient. Assume
the water to be at a pressure of 20 atm. And also find the change in value of heat transfer
coefficient when
a. The temperature difference is increased to 30°C at a pressure of 10 atm.
b. The pressure is raised to 20 atm at dT = 15°C.
