4 ONT Placement Criteria:

4.1. ONT should be placed at a location considering the route decided for the drop cable.
4.2. Check from the customer about his/her requirement for the in-house cabling.
4.3. Central location is preferable for the ONT to have maximum Wi-Fi coverage. In the case of double-story
house, ONT should be placed near the ceiling or midway along the stairs.
4.4. ONT must not be in a damp or dusty area.
4.5. Direct exposure to sunlight should be avoided.
4.6. Installation of ONT in bathrooms, shower rooms or kitchens is not allowed.
4.7. ONT should not be installed under Air-Conditioner.
4.8. ONT should be placed near to the commercial power socket to avoid using extension sockets.
4.9. UPS, if required, should be installed close to ONT.
4.10. Typically, Li-ion Battery with 4- to 8-hour backup and minimum 300 cycle life should be used.
4.11. The location of the Indoor ONT for customer LAN shall be at a common point, where all the
internal conduits meet and the structured cabling system (SCS) on a star topology can be installed.
However, the farthest socket shall not exceed 90 M from the ONT.
4.12. Ensure that all cables, including power and fiber optic cables, are properly managed to avoid
entanglement or strain, which could potentially damage the cables over time.
4.13. Make sure that the ONT is placed in a well-ventilated area to prevent overheating. Avoid placing
the ONT in enclosed spaces like cabinets unless proper ventilation is provided.
4.14. Consider the security of the ONT placement. The ONT should be placed in a secure area to
prevent unauthorized access or tampering, especially in public or shared spaces.
4.15. Avoid placing the ONT too close to other electronic devices that could cause interference, such as
microwave ovens, cordless phones, or heavy electrical equipment.
4.16. It’s advisable to connect the ONT to a surge protector to safeguard against power surges that
could potentially damage the equipment.
4.17. If applicable, ensure that the ONT and any associated equipment are properly grounded to
prevent electrical hazards and equipment damage.
4.18. Regularly check for and install firmware updates for the ONT to ensure it has the latest security
patches and performance enhancements.
4.19. Keep a record of the ONT installation details, including the model, serial number, installation
date, and any relevant configuration settings for future reference.

5 Support team for ATV over Wi-Fi (CXO Premises):

5.1. Points of Contact (POCs) from all relevant stakeholders have been identified. The designated support
team will be responsible for assisting and providing support to the BO (Business Operations) and CC
(Customer Care) teams specifically in cases where untested third-party extenders or ONTs are utilized for
ATV over Wi-Fi in CXO premises only.
5.2. For all other complaints following the launch of the IPTV over Wi-Fi service, the CC and BO teams will
follow the standard complaint resolution process, adhering to the existing SOPs. The IPTV team will take
the lead in managing this support function, while other team members will play supporting roles. The
members of the support team are listed below.

5.3. In instances where issues are encountered with new or untested extenders, the BO team will be
responsible for retrieving the untested ONTs/extenders and transferring them to the QA lab for testing.
Complaint resolution will be based on the outcomes of these tests.
5.4. Additionally, before retrieving the ONTs/extenders for testing, the BO team must ensure that the
customer is provided with IPTV service over a LAN cable.

6 Recommendations:
Based on the comprehensive testing conducted, several observations and insights have been gathered
regarding the performance and optimal usage of the Android TV(ATVs) over Wi-Fi.

6.1 The following recommendations aim to enhance user experience, improve connectivity, and ensure
reliable operation. These suggestions are intended to address identified issues and to facilitate the
effective deployment of ATVs, thereby maximizing their performance and customer satisfaction.
6.2 Issues have been observed with Received Signal Strength Indicator (RSSI) values equal to or
weaker than -50 dBm. Therefore, the placement of the ONT and ATV should be ensured to have an
RSSI stronger than -50 dBm.
6.3 Issues have been noted at distances of 40 feet or more. Therefore, the ATV should be placed less
than 40 feet from the ONT.
6.4 It is recommended to utilize the ATV over Wi-Fi service on the 5GHz band instead of the 2.4GHz
band on the ONT.
6.5 If the distance exceeds 40 feet or the signal strength is equal to or weaker than -50 dBm, the use of
an extender is advised.
6.6 The Customer Premises Equipment (CPE) installer must possess technical expertise in configuring
the extender with multicast settings.
6.7 The CPE installer should receive training on the configuration of multicast settings on the extender
prior to launching ATV over Wi-Fi for customers.
6.8 When using an extender, it is essential to enable multicast on the LAN ports.
6.9 A Wi-Fi repeater should not be employed if the ONT RSSI is weaker than -50 dBm; instead, the use
of a Wi-Fi extender is recommended.
6.10 A dual-band extender is preferred for ATV over Wi-Fi.
6.11 The Wi-Fi channel of the extender must not overlap with the ONT’s Wi-Fi channel to avoid co-
channel interference and overlapping channels.
6.12 Following optimal installation, it should be clearly communicated to the customer that the location
of the ATV should not be altered without prior notification to PTCL.
6.13 The PTCL CPE installer should be equipped with appropriate tools and a laptop to identify Wi-Fi
issues at the customer’s premises.
6.14 Network configuration should be optimized by utilizing the 5GHz band for multicast traffic,
selecting the least congested channel, and configuring wider channels to increase throughput.
6.15 The placement of ONTs, extenders, and ATVs within customer premises should be optimized to
avoid dead zones and enhance coverage in high-traffic areas.
6.16 It is imperative to keep the firmware of the ATV, ONT, and extender updated.
6.17 Customers are encouraged to use the PTCL-provided extender for ATV over Wi-Fi.
6.18 If there are any extenders that have not yet been tested by QA, we will temporarily exempt
customers from their use. We will gather the necessary details, retrieve the extender from the
customer, ensure that they use IPTV Service over LAN for the time being and ensure QA conducts
thorough testing, and include the results in the updated documentation. The concerned departments
will then share the revised document with all relevant stakeholders after successful testing of the
said extender/extenders.

6.19 Please find below table summarizing the typical Received Signal Strength Indicator (RSSI) values,
their corresponding signal strength levels:

RSSI (dBm) Signal Strength Description

>-30 Excellent Maximum signal strength, high quality
-31 to -50 Good Strong signal, good quality
-51 to -60 Fair Acceptable signal, moderate quality
-61 to -70 Weak Poor signal, lower quality
-71 to -90 Very Weak Barely usable signal, poor quality
< -91 No Signal Unusable, no connectivity

6.20 The distance of 40 feet is considered a free-space distance. In the presence of obstructions, please
account for potential signal losses as follows:

Material Signal Loss (dBm)

Clear glass 2 - 3 dBm
Brick wall 8 - 28 dBm
Concrete wall (6 inches) 18 - 24 dBm
Plywood 3 - 4 dBm
