EXERCISE: Character Construction Practice
Referencing any of the characters on the following pages, follow and practice the construction process – then, as you build your
confidence, try playing with the construction and character features in different ways. Alter the constructions and features to
make the characters older or younger, fatter or thinner, muscular, more cartoony, more heroic, more villainous, and so on.

EXERCISE: Brainstorm Sketch Character Prompts
Brainstorm sketch and ‘play’ with character constructions and concepts on several of the below prompts. Set yourself a time

change your approach and try new ideas with every sketch you make!

EXERCISE: Iterating and testing designs
In the following pages you’ll find groups of brainstorm sketches, with
occasional highlights of sketch preferences. Have a go at mixing and
matching some traits from the brainstorm sketch groups into more
final designs of your own making, and as you work your way to designs
you like, try playing with their expressions, or draw them on different
angles, to ‘test’ their usability.

EXERCISE: Refine a design in a polished presentation
The following pages contain some semi-final designs ready to be presented in
their final artwork – try your hand at representing these characters in a refined
artwork! PLEASE NOTE: These are MY designs and in my style, so you may not
find it easy to work based on my sketches, this is always best practiced in your
own style and at your skill level, however I wanted to include some designs as
inspiration for your to have in case you need some help getting to a more
finalized design to practice your refinement.
