Re-Cap of Major Scale Progressions:

Before we go into Minor Scale Progressions, let us make quick re-cap of Major Scale
Progressions lessons we have seen earlier.

Major scale notes start with the root note and then the progression goes in the following
pattern:

MAJOR SCALES
R W W H W W W H

Where, R indicates the ‘root’ note, W indicates the ‘whole’ note and H indicates the ‘half’ note.

Thus, if we are looking a for a E Major Scale Progression, the root note is E. The next whole
note is F# (two half notes away). In between E and F#, you have a note F, which is a half
note. Progressing like this, we will have the following notes for each Major Scales:

MAJOR SCALES
R W W H W W W H
C D E F G A B C
C# D# F F# G# A# C C#
D E F# G A B C# D
D# F G G# A# C D D#
E F# G# A B C# D# E
F G A A# C D E F
F# G# A# B C# D# F F#
G A B C D E F# G
G# A# C C# D# F G G#
A B C# D E F# G# A
A# C D D# F G A A#
B C# D# E F# G# A# B

Minor Scale Progressions:

We have three Minor Scale Progression patterns each with minor variation to the other –
Normal or Natural Minor Scale, Harmonic Minor Scale and Melodic Minor Scale. The
progression pattern for each of these variations is given below:

NORMAL MINOR SCALES

R W H W W H W W
HARMONIC MINOR SCALES
R W H W W H W+H H
MELODIC MINOR SCALES
R W H W W W W H

So we can start with any root note and build the progression as per the pattern given above
for each of the Minor Scale Progressions.

Take any root note and build your progression for each of the minor scale progressions before
checking the result given below.

The minor scale progression for each root note looks like:

NORMAL MINOR SCALES

R W H W W H W W
C D D# F G G# A# C
C# D# E F# G# A B C#
D E F G A A# C D
D# F F# G# A# B C# D#
E F# G A B C D E
F G G# A# C C# D# F
F# G# A B C# D E F#
G A A# C D D# F G
G# A# B C# D# E F# G#
A B C D E F G A
A# C C# D# F F# G# A#
B C# D E F# G A B

HARMONIC MINOR SCALES

R W H W W H W+H H
C D D# F G G# B C
C# D# E F# G# A C C#
D E F G A A# C# D
D# F F# G# A# B D D#

MELODIC MINOR SCALES

Example of Minor Scale Progression pattern in Fret Board:

Natural A Minor Scale Progression:

E---------------------------0-1-3~5------5~3-1-0------------------------------- E

B--------------------0-1-3-------------------------3-1-0------------------------ B

G---------------0-2---------------------------------------2-0------------------- G

D--------0-2-3------------------------------------------------3-2-0------------ D

A-0-2-3--------------------------------------------------------------3-2-0----- A

E--------------------------------------------------------------------------------- E

The tab positions for other Minor Scale Progressions are intentionally not given. Using what
you have learnt in the earlier 3 lessons and the details given in this lesson, try to tab the
Minor Scale Progressions for other notes.

Note: It is to be noted that playing the scale progressions by seeing the tab positions is only
the starting step in the learning process. You should try to play the any scale progression
without seeing any sheets. This perfection is expected to come out only by practice and
counting the tab positions from the root note.

Exercise 1:

Try and play any scale progression in your guitar without any sheets. In fact, this can be kept
as a warm up exercise whenever you sit for playing guitar. You can choose different note each
time for this purpose.

Exercise 2:

Just to get a recap on playing / practising tabs and to get a flow into Natural A - Minor Scale
Progressions, try this in your guitar.

E---------------------------------------------------------------------- E

B---------------------------------------------------------------------- B

G---------------------------------------------0------------0-2------- G

D----------0----------0-2-3---------0-2-3--------0-2-3------------ D

A--0-2-3--------2-3--------------3---------------------------------- A

E---------------------------------------------------------------------- E

E--------------------------------------------------------------------------- E

B--------------------------------------------------------------------------- B

G--2-0-------------0------------------------------------------------------- G

D-------3-2-0--------3-2-0--------3-2-0-----------2-0------------------ D

A-----------------------------3-------------3-2------------3-2-0--------- A

E--------------------------------------------------------------------------- E

Try and extend the progression in the ascending scale (first tab above) till low E string.

With this we come to the end of major and minor scale progressions. We will see about
Pentatonic Scales in the next lesson. Hope you are into your practice regularly.
