1 About Health Variations 1 - Perioperative

1.1 An Introduction to this Unit

This unit provides the theoretical background knowledge for Professional Practice 3. It introduces the student
to the fundamental principles of perioperative nursing care in supporting clients undergoing surgical interventions
incorporating the related pathophysiology and pharmacology. In particular, nursing care of surgical interventions
relating to the gastrointestinal, musculoskeletal and reproductive systems, and injury prevention and controls will be
the focus of case history reviews. The National Health Priority Areas of Injury Prevention and Control, Arthritis and
Musculoskeletal conditions and Cancer Control will be addressed.

1.2 What is Expected of You

Study Load

A student is expected to study an hour per credit point a week. For example a 10 credit point Unit would require 10
hours of study per week. This time includes the time spent within classes during lectures, tutorials or practicals.

Attendance

It is strongly recommended that students attend all scheduled learning activities to support their learning.

2 Assessment Information

2.1 Unit Learning Outcomes

This unit will contribute to completion of course level outcomes, Western Sydney University graduate attributes
and the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia Registered Nurse Standards for Practice. Course level learning
outcomes can be accessed on your Unit vUWS Home Page.

The Health Variation 1 unit is part of the Bachelor of Nursing Degree. The unit provides the foundation for developing
comprehensive, coherent and connected knowledge in the nursing discipline and introduces and develops interaction
skills which will be required by graduates in their work environments.

Learning outcomes for the unit are outlined below.

1 Apply the principles of perioperative nursing to the role of the nurse in the perioperative period
2 Explain safe and effective use of pharmacological agents across the lifespan in the perioperative period
3 Discuss non-pharmacological comfort measures that may be used during the perioperative period
4 Discuss the pathophysiology of gastrointestinal conditions across the lifespan
5 Discuss breast and bowel conditions across the lifespan
6 Discuss the pathophysiology of arthritis, musculoskeletal conditions and cancer across the lifespan
7 Discuss injury prevention and control as they relate to pathophysiology across the lifespan
8 Use information literacy skills to access and evaluate relevant evidence-based literature on the provision of
effective nursing management of people across the lifespan in the perioperative period

2.2 Approach to Learning

1. Blended Learning : It is an expectation of this unit that you will fully engage with the online learning
and teaching resources that have been designed to be dynamic and interactive before attending each
class either online or face to face. Blended learning activities have been embedded throughout the unit content
to enhance the student learning experiences through the use of tutorials, clinical practice units, audio visual material,
small group work, and online quiz material. Access to a computer and the internet is essential in order to be able
to: access course materials; to participate in discussion groups; and to access additional resources provided by the
lecturer during the session. See [Link]

2. Tutorial/Workshop/Seminar: Tutorials have been developed as the forum for engaged discussion, clar-
ification and expansion of your learning. A tutorial/workshop/seminar is a small group activity that enables you
to have lecture content explained by the tutor if required. You will then be able to apply, explore and debate the
content through interactive learning activities with other students.

2.3 Assessment Summary

The assessment items in this Unit are designed to enable you to demonstrate that you have achieved the Unit
learning outcomes. Completion and submission of all assessment items which have been designated as mandatory or
compulsory is essential to receive a passing grade.

To pass this Unit you must:

Feedback is an important part of the learning process that can improve your progress towards achieving the learning

Aim of Assessment

The aim of this assessment is to assess student’s knowledge and understanding acquired by engaging with the unit’s
weekly content.

Details

Students are required to access two (2) online quizzes on vUWS to consolidate, enhance and evaluate learning in
this unit. Questions in these quizzes will be drawn from the content covered in modules and on-line readings. The
quizzes have an open time limit over the weekly period of access to encourage students to work through material if
unfamiliar. Feedback on answers is provided to encourage formative learning.

Quiz 1 (week 3) will focus on content from modules 1 and 2

Quiz 2 (week 12) will focus on content from modules 10 and 11

Each quiz will be open for a seven (7) day period

- Students can attempt each quiz once at any time during the 7-day availability period.

- You are strongly encouraged to attempt the assessment early in the assessment period to avoid or resolve any
unforeseen difficulties.

- Quizzes are to be accessed via the unit vUWS site under Assessment Zone.

- Each quiz will consist of 20 randomly selected multiple-choice questions. There is only one correct answer for each
question.

Assessment Instructions

1. You have 20 minutes to complete your online quiz assessment, unless otherwise specified.

2. You must complete the assessment in one complete sitting.

3. Once you begin the quiz the quiz timer is activated as soon as you start

- The Unit Coordinator will assess your evidence of technical difficulties and provide you with further instructions.

- No technical difficulties will be considered after the quiz has closed.

- If Special Consideration is accepted, a supplementary quiz assessment will be offered in a week to be notified by
the Unit Coordinator.

Length: 1,200 words

Aim of assessment

The aim of this assessment is for students to discuss the pathogenesis of breast cancer and lymphoedema and explain
the pharmacological effect of morphine during the perioperative period.

Word count/duration

There is a word limit of 1,200 words. Use your computer to total the number of words used in your assignment.
However, do not include the reference list at the end of your assignment in the word count. In-text citations will be
included in the additional 10% word count. If you exceed the word limit by more than 10% the marker will stop
marking at 1,200 words plus 10%.

Case Study with three (3) Guided Questions.

Mrs Catherine Prakash is a 34-year-old woman who presented to her General Practitioner (GP) for her yearly medical
review. During her breast check the doctor found a palpable lump in her right breast. Catherine told her doctor
that she noticed the lump about 6 months ago but was not worried as she was still breast feeding her 12-month-old
baby and having “lumpy”breasts was normal for her. The GP ordered an urgent breast ultrasound. The ultrasound
results show a small solid mass in her right breast. Catherine was referred to a breast surgeon for continued care.
After further investigations by Dr. Middleton (breast surgeon) Catherine was diagnosed with Invasive Ductal breast
carcinoma stage IIA. Catherine was scheduled for a Right Breast Partial Mastectomy and removal of several axillary
lymph nodes the following week.

Catherine’s past history includes:


Medical: diagnosed with type 2 diabetes at 28 years old. Catherine weighs 91kg.

Social: Catherine is married and has two children aged four years old and 12 months old. Catherine is a civil engineer
working part-time with her local council.

Catherine was admitted to her local private hospital one day prior to her surgery so that the Clinical Nurse Consultatnt
(CNC) who specialises in breast care can have a private consultation with her to discuss the surgery, postoperative
expectations and ongoing care including the follow-up radiotherapy that will commenced in six weeks’ time.

Catherine’s surgery went well. Post operatively on return to the ward Catherine’s vital signs are:

- BP 144/85mmHg, HR 89bpm, HR 16bpm, SpO2 96% on RA (room air)

- BGL (Blood Glucose Level) 5.2mmol/L

- Current pain score 3/10

- a Haemovac drain with 10mL of bright red blood

- an intact dressing on her chest incision

Catherine has been ordered:

- I.V. Sodium Chloride 0,9% 1000mls 8 hourly

Aim of assessment

The aim of this examination is to assess student’s understanding of the topics and applications of the unit.
Details

1. This Multiple Choice Question (MCQ) examination is completed online

2. This assessment will consist of 50 multiple choice questions.

3. You have 60 minutes (1 hour) to complete your online exam, unless otherwise specified.

4. You must complete the exam in one complete sitting.

5. The exam includes all the material covered in all modules of the unit.

6. Assessments listed as individual assessments must be completed independently - Students are advised to refer
back to their notes, textbooks or appropriate academic, peer-reviewed resources utilised during unit delivery

Examination Instructions:

1. To commence your online examination on time, log in to your vUWS site 15 minutes prior to your exam start time
to set up and be ready to download when your exam starts.

2. Ensure your internet bandwidth is not being used by anyone in your home or workspace to stream content such
as You Tube or Netflix, as this could affect the performance of your exam.

7. Before logging in to vUWS check your browser is compatible at the following link: [Link]

8. Log into vUWS from the WSU homepage

9. Locate and click on the unit for which you have an exam

10. Locate your exam in the ’Assessment Zone’ titled ’Final Exam’ or ’Final Examination’

11. Read the Examination instructions BEFORE attempting your exam

12. When your exam is to commence, hit the refresh button at the time of your scheduled exam. The page will

refresh, and the exam will show up on your screen.

Technical difficulties during your exam

IMPORTANT - You will need to lodge an IT ticket for any technical difficulties during your exam. This will constitute
evidence that you had genuine technical difficulties and you will need to apply for a deferred exam with this supporting
evidence. Other evidence such as NBN network issues or if you have been notified of internet outage, this will also
need to be documented as part of your deferred exam application. Documentation can include screenshots of your
technical error message, along with the IT ticket that has been lodged.

Academic Integrity / Misconduct - FAQ

Deferred Exams

If you are unable to attend a final exam due to a serious illness, misadventure or other exceptional circumstances
beyond your control you can apply for a deferred exam. A Deferred Exam Application must be lodged online no
later than 5.00pm on the second working day after your scheduled exam. Deferred exam applications are completed
using the Special Consideration/Deferred Exam electronic e-form. Please ensure you have all the relevant supporting
documentation prior to submitting your form.

2.5 General Submission Requirements

Submission

– All assignments must be submitted by the specified due date and time.
– Complete your assignment and follow the individual assessment item instructions on how to submit. You must
keep a copy of all assignments submitted for marking.

Turnitin

– The Turnitin plagiarism prevention system may be used within this Unit. Turnitin is accessed via logging into
vUWS for the Unit. If Turnitin is being used with this Unit, this means that your assignments have to be
submitted through the Turnitin system. Turnitin from iParadigms is a web-based text-matching software that
identifies and reports on similarities between documents. It is also widely utilised as a tool to improve academic
writing skills. Turnitin compares electronically submitted papers against the following:
– Current and archived web: Turnitin currently contains over 24 billion web pages including archived pages
– Student papers: including Western Sydney University student submissions since 2007
– Scholarly literature: Turnitin has partnered with leading content publishers, including library databases,
text-book publishers, digital reference collections and subscription-based publications (e.g. Gale, Pro-
quest, Emerald and Sage)

– Turnitin is used by over 30 universities in Australia and is increasingly seen as an industry standard. It is
an important tool to assist students with their academic writing by promoting awareness of [Link]

– I hold a copy of this assignment if the original is lost or damaged
– No part of this assignment has been copied from any other student’s work or from any other source except
where due acknowledgement is made in the assignment
– No part of the assignment has been written for me by any other person/s
– I have complied with the specified word length for this assignment
– I am aware that this work may be reproduced and submitted to plagiarism detection software programs for
the purpose of detecting possible plagiarism (which may retain a copy on its database for future plagiarism
checking).

Self-Plagiarising

– You are to ensure that no part of any submitted assignment for this Unit or product has been submitted by
yourself in another (previous or current) assessment from any Unit, except where appropriately referenced, and
with prior permission from the Lecturer/Tutor/Unit Coordinator of this Unit.

Late Submission

– If you submit a late assessment, without receiving approval for an extension of time, (see next item), you will
be penalised by 10% per day for up to 10 days. In other words, marks equal to 10% of the assignment’s weight
will be deducted from the mark awarded.
– For example, if the highest mark possible is 50, 5 marks will be deducted from your awarded mark for each late
day.
– Saturday and Sunday are counted as one calendar day each.
– Assessments will not be accepted after the marked assessment task has been returned to students.
– This is consistent with Western Sydney University’s Assessment Policy

Extension of Due Date for Submission

Extensions are only granted in exceptional circumstances. To apply for an extension of time, locate an application
form via the Western Sydney University homepage or copy the following link:

Application forms must be submitted to the Unit Coordinator/Convenor. Requests for extension should be made as
early as possible and submitted within policy deadlines. Appropriate, supporting documentation must be submitted
with the application. An application for an extension does not automatically mean that an extension will be granted.
Assessments will not be accepted after the marked assessment task has been returned to students.

Resubmission

Resubmission of assessment items will not normally be granted if requested.

Application for Special Consideration

It is strongly recommended that you attend all scheduled learning activities to support your learning. If you have
suffered misadventure, illness, or you have experienced exceptional circumstances that have prevented your attendance
at class or your completion and submission of assessment tasks, you may need to apply for Special Consideration via the

is not automatically granted. It is your responsibility to ensure that any missed content has been covered. Your
