1 INTRODUCTION

Dear Student

Unisa is a comprehensive open distance e-learning (CODeL) higher education institution. Our
comprehensive curricula encapsulate a range of offerings, from strictly vocational to strictly academic
certificates, diplomas and degrees. Unisa’s “openness” and its distance e-learning character result in
many students who may not previously have had an opportunity to enrol in higher education registering
at the University. Our CODeL character implies that our programmes are carefully planned and structured
to ensure success for students, ranging from the under-prepared but with potential to those who are
sufficiently prepared.

Teaching and learning in a CODeL context involve multiple modes of delivery, ranging from blended to
fully online learning. As a default position, all post-graduate programmes are offered fully online with no
printed study materials, while undergraduate programmes are offered using a blended mode of delivery
where printed study materials are augmented with online teaching and learning via the learner
management system, myUnisa. In some instances, undergraduate programmes are offered fully online
as well.

Furthermore, our programmes are aligned with the vision, mission and values of the University. Unisa’s
commitment to serving humanity and shaping futures – combined with a clear appreciation of our location
on the African continent – means that Unisa’s graduates have distinctive graduate qualities, which include

• being independent, resilient, responsible and caring citizens able to fulfil and serve in multiple
roles in their immediate and future local, national and global communities
• having a critical understanding of their location on the African continent and taking account of
its histories, challenges and potential in relation to globally diverse contexts
• the ability to critically analyse and evaluate the credibility and usefulness of information and data
from multiple sources in a globalised world with ever-increasing information and data flows and
competing worldviews
• how to apply their discipline-specific knowledges competently, ethically and creatively to solve
real-life problems
• an awareness of their own learning and developmental needs and future potential

NOTE: This is a fully online module. It is therefore only available on myUnisa.

This is an online module, which means that all information is available on the internet. We use myUnisa
as our virtual campus. myUnisa is an online system that is used to administer, document and deliver
educational material to you, and support engagement with you. Look out for information from your
lecturer and from Unisa in general to determine how to access the virtual myUnisa module site.
Information on the tools that will be available to engage with your lecturer and fellow students to support
your learning will be communicated via various Unisa platforms.

You are encouraged to log in to the module site on myUnisa regularly (at least twice per week). Because
this is a fully online module, you will need to use myUnisa to study and complete the prescribed learning
activities. Visit the website for CREW01U on myUnisa frequently. The website for your module is
CREW01U-2025-S1 in semester 1 and CREW01U-2025-S2 in semester 2.

We wish you every success with your studies!

2 PURPOSE AND OUTCOMES

2.1 Purpose

This course is intended for all people who are interested to learn more about wellness and the
psychological factors that influence individual and employee wellness. The purpose of learning in this
course is to enable students to gain insight into their own level of optimal functioning and personal
psychological wellness as well as assist them in developing a personal development plan to enhance
these areas of functioning in the work context. Qualifying students are able to demonstrate an informed
knowledge base and informed understanding of the psychological principles, terms, concepts and
theories of employee wellness from the perspective of salutogenesis and positive psychology.

2.2 Outcomes

To help you understand what is expected of you and the criteria that we will use to assess your progress,
we have provided the learning outcomes and assessment criteria below. Work through these specific
outcomes and associated assessment criteria in order to find out specifically what to concentrate on and
what will be expected of you in completing this course.

individual wellness in general
• describe employee wellness and the organisational factors that enhance it
• discuss the importance of a balanced lifestyle and how the employee in the work context relates
to this

Learning outcome 2: Identify and discuss factors/influences inhibiting employee wellness.

Assessment criteria:

employees’ wellness

3 CURRICULUM TRANSFORMATION

Unisa has implemented a transformation charter that places curriculum transformation high on the
teaching and learning agenda. Curriculum transformation includes student-centred scholarship, the
pedagogical renewal of teaching and assessment practices, the scholarship of teaching and learning,
and the infusion of African epistemologies and philosophies. All of these are being phased in at both
programme and module levels. As a result of this, you will notice a marked change in the teaching and
learning strategy implemented by Unisa, together with the way in which the content is conceptualised in
your modules. We encourage you to embrace these changes during your studies at Unisa responsively
and within the framework of transformation.

5 RESOURCES

5.1 Prescribed books

There are no prescribed books for this module. You will receive a Reader free of charge when you
register for this course. You therefore do not need to buy a prescribed book, since the Reader contains
all the material you need for this course.

Note that the Reader is compiled of articles and texts written in different styles by different authors and
at a variety of levels of difficulty. It also includes a number of different activities. This should actually
make the course more interesting. Keep in mind that this Reader is compiled from perspectives written
by South African, American and European authors. Because we function in an era of change and
globalisation, anything that happens elsewhere in the world is relevant to us here in South Africa. We
have therefore tried to include a wide variety of the most recent and relevant perspectives on the topic
of employee wellness.

Your task as a student is to work through the Reader and to familiarise yourself with its contents. You
therefore need to plan your semester in advance and take the assignment deadlines into account. Before
you seriously start studying the Reader, glance through the table of content of the Reader to get a feel
of what this course involves and what you will be studying this semester. We believe that, once you have
identified with the course content, you will even be more motivated to tackle the course enthusiastically
and with a certain amount of dedication. Make a point of doing all the activities, because the activities
provide you with an excellent opportunity to relate theoretical concepts to the everyday world of
employee wellness.

This course in employee wellness can be divided into three parts, and the material in your Reader is
organised according to these three parts.

Part 1 in the Reader introduces basic concepts such as the competent human being, optimal functioning,
wellness, and the importance of a balanced lifestyle. The objective in part 1 is to familiarise you with the
concepts that you will be learning more about during this course. In part 1, you will learn what makes a
person competent, how wellness at work and at home can be described, and why a balanced lifestyle is
so important.

Part 2 focuses on stress, burnout and factors that negatively affect employee wellness. The objective of
part 2 is to improve your understanding of stressors, both in terms of how they influence an employee in
general and in terms of your own personal stressors. In part 2, we shall also be discussing factors relating
to burnout and reflect on the effect that stressors and burnout has on people (including you).

Part 3 examines alternative ways of handling everyday stressors, how to view and perceive optimal
functioning, and how to improve your personal wellbeing, both at work and in your private life. It also
examines how to use different perspectives of salutogenesis and positive psychology when attempting
to function as a human being experiencing employee wellness.

6.1 The Unisa First-Year Experience Programme

Many students find the transition from school education to tertiary education stressful and this is often
true for students enrolling at Unisa for the first time. Unisa is a dedicated open distance and e-learning
institution and is very different from face-to-face/contact institutions. It is a mega university and all its
programmes are offered through either blended learning or fully online learning. For these reasons, we
offer first-time students additional/extended support to help them navigate the Unisa teaching and
learning journey seamlessly and with little difficulty and few barriers.

Unisa’s First-Year Experience (FYE) Programme has been specially designed to provide you with prompt
and helpful information about the services that the institution offers.

6.2 Using recognition of prior learning (RPL) to apply for module credit within a qualification

Now that you are a registered student, you are advised to familiarise yourself with the learning outcomes
of the module or modules you have chosen. If you have been exposed to those learning outcomes for
three years or more – either through work experience or other involvement – you can apply to be
exempted from completing assignments and writing examinations. As part of your application for this
exemption, you will be required to compile a portfolio of evidence substantiating how your experience is
equivalent to the learning outcomes. The diagram below shows the steps involved in obtaining
recognition of prior learning (RPL) for module credit. For more information on the process, RPL fees, and
the contact details of your college RPL coordinator, visit the Unisa website: www.unisa.ac.za/rpl.

8 PRACTICAL WORK

There is no practical work in this module.

9 ASSESSMENT

9.1 Assessment criteria

The assignments in this course are aimed at integrating the learning you gained by doing the activities
in the Reader. It is also aimed at assessing your knowledge (theoretical input) and your ability to apply
what you have learned through practical activities, which are designed to help you reflect on and
understand the content of the course, as well as facilitate your own learning and development. More
importantly, perhaps, is that the assignments are designed to enable you to apply the theory of employee
wellness to real life.

12
CREW01U/101/3/2025

The first assignment will assess your ability to understand and apply certain aspects of the competent
human being and certain aspects of employee wellness and stress. In this assignment, you will also be
challenged to explore the degree to which you are currently experiencing wellness and how you are
going to maintain or address this in your life.

The second assignment covers aspects of burnout as well as issues relating to

salutogenesis/fortigenesis and positive psychology. You will also get the opportunity to review your state
of wellness again as well as suggest further development plans for yourself.

Assignments can be written or typed (1.5 spacing). Allow space in the margins for lecturers’
comments.

The third assignment, which will replace the examination, will include all aspects of the module. No
feedback will be provided for this assignment. The third assignment is not included in this tutorial
letter – it will be uploaded with an announcement under Additional Resources four weeks prior to
the due date.

We will mark the assignments. We have also included self-assessment questions with the assignments.
These guidelines will challenge you to look critically at your own wellness status and performance in the
assignments.

Feedback on Assignments 01 and 02 will be given in Tutorial Letter 201/3/2022. This tutorial will be
uploaded on myUnisa only. Remember, no posting of material as this is an online module.

9.2 Assessment plan

• To complete this module, you will be required to submit three assignments.

• All information about when and where to submit your assignments is available on the myModules
site for your module.
• The assignment weighting for the module is 100%.

9.3 Assignment due dates

• The assignment due dates are included in this tutorial letter.

• The assignment due dates will also be made available to you on the myUnisa landing page under
myModules for this module. We envisage that the due dates will be available to you upon
registration.
• Please start working on your assessments as soon as you register for the module.
• Log on to the myUnisa site for this module to obtain more information on the due dates for the
submission of the assignments.

9.4 Submission of assignments

• Unisa, as a comprehensive open distance e-learning institution (CODeL), is moving towards

becoming an online institution. You will see, therefore, that all your study material, assessments
and engagements with your lecturer and fellow students will take place online. To facilitate this,
we use myUnisa as our virtual campus.

13
CREW01U/101/3/2025

• The myUnisa virtual campus offers students access to the myModules site, where learning
material is available online and where assessments should be completed. Together, myUnisa
and myModules form an online system that is used to administer, document, and deliver
educational material to students and support engagement between those students and Unisa’s
academics.
• The myUnisa platform can be accessed via https://my.unisa.ac.za. Click on the myModules 2025
button to access the online sites for the modules for which you are registered.
• The University undertakes to communicate clearly and as frequently as is necessary to ensure
that you obtain the greatest benefit from your use of the myModules learning management
system. Please access the Announcements on your myModules site regularly, as this is where
your lecturer will post important information to be shared with you.
• When you access your myModules site for the modules you are registered for, you will see a
welcome message posted by your lecturer. Below the welcome message you will see the
assessment shells for the assignments that you need to complete. Some assignments may be
multiple choice, some may be tests and others may be written assignments, while some may be
forum discussions and so on. All assignments must be completed on the assessment shells
available on the respective module platforms.
• For written assignments, please note the due date by which your work must be submitted. Ensure
that you follow the guidelines given by your lecturer to complete the assignment. Click on the
submission button on the relevant assessment shell on myModules. You will then be able to
upload your written assignment to the myModules site for the modules for which you are
registered. Before you finalise the upload, double-check that you have selected the correct file
for uploading. Remember, no marks can be allocated for incorrectly submitted assignments.

9.4.1 Types of assignments and descriptions

All assignments are defined as either optional, mandatory/compulsory, or elective.

• Elective assignments
- If not submitted, the student gets no mark for this item.
- The best of the required submissions will count.
• Mandatory assignments
- If not submitted, the student gets no mark for this item.
• Optional assignments
- You are encouraged as a student to do optional assignments in order to benefit your learning.

I. Elective assignments
a. The student is given a choice of which assignments within an identified group to submit and
only the best result/s, the number of which is specified in advance, will contribute towards the
year mark.
b. Elective assignments must be grouped into an elective group.
c. For the student to select which assignment to submit, the elective assignments must be
grouped together. For such an elective group, relevant information (such as how many of the
assignments must be submitted and how many of the assignment marks should be combined
into the year mark) will be supplied to you.
d. The selection criteria define how marks received for assignments in an elective group are to
be combined into the year mark. Three different criteria may be used for calculating the year
mark:
• The best mark should be used, or
• If the student submits fewer than the required number of assignments per group, or
no assignment in a group, a mark of 0% will be given.
• 0% is awarded to all non-submitted or unmarked assessments. A best mark is then
calculated from all the qualifying items submitted.
14
CREW01U/101/3/2025

II. Mandatory assignments

a. Mandatory assignments contribute to the year mark.
b. If a student fails to submit a mandatory assignment, no mark is awarded and the year mark
is calculated accordingly. The student will therefore forfeit the marks attached to such an
assignment when the final mark for the module is calculated.

III. Optional assignments – You are encouraged, as a student, to do optional assignments in

order to benefit your learning.

9.5 The assignments

As indicated in section 9.2, you need to complete three assignments for this module. Details of the tasks
set will appear on the assignments themselves.

10 ACADEMIC DISHONESTY

10.1 Plagiarism

Plagiarism is the act of taking the words, ideas and thoughts of others and presenting them as your own.
It is a form of theft. Plagiarism includes the following forms of academic dishonesty:

• copying and pasting from any source without acknowledging that source
• not including references or deliberately inserting incorrect bibliographic information
• paraphrasing without acknowledging the source of the information

10.2 Cheating

Cheating includes, but is not limited to, the following:

• completing assessments on behalf of another student, copying the work of another student
during an assessment, or allowing another student to copy your work
• using social media (e.g. WhatsApp, Telegram) or other platforms to disseminate assessment
information
• submitting corrupt or irrelevant files – this matter is addressed in the examination guidelines
• buying completed answers from so-called “tutors” or internet sites (contract cheating)

For more information about plagiarism, follow the link below:

assignments and Tutorial Letter CIOPALLA/301/2024 contains important
information that applies to all students registered in the Department of
Industrial and Organisational Psychology. It is important to read Tutorial

questions. You will be penalised if you do not provide source references in
your assignments.

You must read all the tutorial letters since they always contain important
information and sometimes urgent information.
Please make sure that you work through the tutorial letters before you
embark on any work in the study material or the assessment tasks.

Question 1: Will I receive all the tutorial material when I register?

Answer
You will be able to find the tutorial material on myUnisa once you have
registered for the module. You must download the tutorial letters under
Additional Resources. It is therefore to your benefit to register as an online
student so that you can access and obtain the study material immediately.
ONLINE LEARNING Question 1: Is it easier to study online than to use print-based material?

Answer
No. The content of an online module is usually identical to that of a print-
based distance-learning course on the same topic. However, an online
course such as this one requires you to be a self-directed learner. Also, you
have to stay motivated to keep on top of the work.

The most successful online students tend to have the following

characteristics:

• They are self-motivated and are self-starters.

• They have excellent organisational and time management skills.
• They are fairly familiar with computers and the internet.
• They are resourceful and actively seek answers and solutions to
questions and problems.

ONLINE LEARNING Question 2: What are the benefits of studying online?

Answer
In the online world you can study anytime and anywhere and at a pace that
suits your individual style. Remember, though, that you still have to meet the
required deadlines for the submission of assignments.

Question 3: What computer skills are useful for online learning?

Answer
The most successful students tend to have the following skills:
• familiarity with their web browser
• familiarity with an e-mail program (which includes knowing how to attach
documents and how to read attachments)
• some familiarity with web interactions like e-mail, social networks and
learning management systems
• familiarity with word processing (MS Word)
• experience in doing successful internet searches by using a variety of
browsers and search engines

Question 4: How important is attitude in achieving success in my

studies and in an online learning environment?

Answer
Your attitude will play a very important part in the level of success you
achieve in your studies. We know that you are interested in human capacity
development, otherwise you would not have enrolled for this module. We
want to encourage you to develop a positive attitude towards your studies
and the online environment.

Maintaining a positive attitude requires that you pay specific attention to time
management. You must be in control of your time and manage it effectively
to ensure that you

• have sufficient time to work through the study material

• submit tasks and assignments by their due dates
• have sufficient time to revise work, to complete the assignments and to
prepare for the examination

We encourage you to follow these guidelines:

• Do not fall behind with your planning.

• Work regularly and consistently.
• Make sure you understand the work as you go along.
• Do not give up on difficult work; rather seek help as soon as possible.

Question 5: How should I approach online learning?

Answer

We all have different learning styles and preferences. Nonetheless, here are
guidelines for you to consider:
• Set aside time to work through each unit and to do the activities.
• Allow extra time for work that seems difficult or hard to understand.
• When you compile a study plan, allow time for personal responsibilities
(e.g., family responsibilities, work obligations, social obligations, leave).
• Use your most productive time to study (e.g., late in the evening after the
children have gone to bed or early in the morning before the rest of the
family wake up).
• It is more effective to study for one hour on a regular basis (e.g., every
day) than to study for ten consecutive hours every two weeks. Decide
now how many hours you are going to spend on your studies every
week. We recommend that you put one to two hours a day aside for your
studies.
• Keep a record of your progress. Being able to see what you have
accomplished will be gratifying and will inspire you if you fall behind. Be
prepared for disruptions to your study programme owing to unforeseen
circumstances. You should monitor your progress so that you can catch
up immediately if you fall behind. It is easier to catch up on the hours lost
in one week than to catch up on the time lost in an entire month.

Discussion Forum tool.
2. Select Add a New Topic.
3. Give your topic a descriptive name in the Topic Title box.

Technical issues Question 2: What is expected of me when I participate in discussion
relating to myUnisa forums?

Answer
Participating in an online discussion forum is not the same as writing an e-
mail or a letter to a lecturer or visiting a chat room. The myUnisa discussion
forums may not be used to send personal messages to lecturers or other
students. You are, however, welcome to use the Student Lounge tool to
introduce yourself to fellow students, to form study groups, and to create your
own topics.

In this module, online discussion forums will be used for academic purposes.
Therefore, the discussions will be based on topics relating to the module
outcomes, the assessments and the supporting content.

An online discussion forum is like a class discussion in a face-to-face

classroom, where the lecturer raises discussion points and asks questions.
All the students can then respond to the lecturer’s questions, as well as to
one another’s responses. The lecturer can then clarify uncertainties and
perhaps provide a summary at the end of the discussion.

Participating in discussion forums provides opportunities to

• discuss and clarify issues in the relevant subject area
• share experiences and ideas with peers and lecturers
• solve problems collaboratively
• debate content-related issues
• raise questions about the topics under discussion
• introduce the most recent developments in the relevant subject area
• receive immediate feedback on assignments
• get access to additional resources relating to relevant topics in this
subject/discipline
Examination Question 1: Are there any tips for the examination?

Answer:
There is no examination for this module. You have to submit all three
assignments.
