1. SUMMARY:
The 2D materials - Reduced graphene oxide (rGO) synthesized by chemical methods always have defects
degrading its conductivity and directly affecting the gas-sensitive signal. Therefore, when there is support from
metal nanomaterials, the conductivity of the rGO/metal nanocomposite is markedly improved because the metal
nanoparticles not only will fill in the surface defects but also play a role as “a nano bridge” for the rGO membranes
while the different oxygen-containing functional groups on the rGO membrane still ensure interaction with gas
molecules. The trend of combining rGO materials with metal nanoparticles has been studied by many laboratories
around the world to enhance the gas-sensitive signal and recovery of sensors in recent years.
The new 2D material - phosphorene (a monolayer form of black phosphorus material) is attracting many
researchers around the world because of their characteristic properties, even have more outstanding properties than
rGO materials as band gap parameters (E ggraphene ~ 0eV; Egphosphorene: 0 – 2eV). Black phosphorus materials
synthesized by condensation from the vapor phase have structural similarity with flake graphite materials, but their
folding structure makes the phosphorene single layer become are more porous which makes them easier to interact
with gas molecules. This helps phosphorene be used not only in gas sensors but also in many other fields. Similar
to rGO, phosphorene materials can also be combined with gold metal nanoparticles to enhance the gas-sensitive
signal of the new hybrid compound compared to "pure" phosphorene materials.
The P3HT conductive polymer were also studied because the P3HT materials converted into 2D films still had
very high electrical conductivity. This allows P3HT to combine with 2D inorganic layer materials (rGO,
phosphorene) to form an organic-inorganic hybrid compound to enhance the gas-sensing signal.
The gold nanoparticles (AuNPs), gold nanowires (AuNRs) or multi-Walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) was
combined with the inorganic materials (rGO, phosphorene) or the conductive polymer materials (P3HT) to form the
hybrid compounds, namely: rGO/AuNP, phosphorene/AuNPs, phosphorene/AuNRs and P3HT:rGO:MWCNTs
(referred to as PGC) respectively. These “hybrid” compounds are the basis for the fabrication of ammonia gas
sensors. As a result, the ammonia (NH 3) gas sensors were made from these hybrid compounds obtains sensing
signal (ΔR/R0) higher than the sensing signal of the “intrinsic” materials. Here in, the sensitivity of the rGO-AuNP
is 13.2 times higher than the “intrinsic” rGO sample while the sensitivity of the phosphorene/AuNPs and
phosphorene/AuNRs are 2.1 times and 3.28 times higher phosphorene samples. In particular, the sensitivity of the
PGC sensor is 4.16 times higher than the sensitivity of the P3HT sample, corresponding to low NH 3 concentration
and the recovering process at room temperature completely.
2. NOVELTY OF THESIS:
The 0D, 1D and 2D materials (rGO): Inheriting previous studies at the training institution, these materials
have been re-synthesized and modified to be suitable for new research area of the thesis.
The new 2D material– phosphorene:
Black phosphorus (referred to as BP): A home-made black phosphorus synthesized system was built and
automated successfully by the temperature controller having from 0 o to 900oC range, customizing the heating rate
of 1-5oC/min with an error of 0.5oC. the BP product was synthesized from the above system with the volume of 360
mg per time, 90% efficiency and obtained some basics results as: (i) the Raman spectrum appears the three
1 2
characteristic modes are A g, A g and B2g, corresponding to the orthorhombic structure; (ii) XRD diagram is re-
confirmed the orthorhombic structure of BP with 3 diffraction peaks at 2θ = 17o, 34.25o, 52.5o compared with the
standard spectrum of BP sample (JCPDS card no. 39-1346); (iii) the EDX results are no impurities, demonstrating
high purity of synthesized BP materials; (iv) SEM image results show the similar layer structure with graphite
flake…
Phosphorene: The separating processes of the black phosphorus into phosphorene layers are successful: (i)
the Raman spectrum is similar with the Raman results of BP materials; (ii) Absorption peak of UV-vis spectrum of
phosphorene-13h sample is at 238 nm... Besides, the NH3 sensing signal of phosphorene-13h sample is 12,5%.
The inorganic hybrid compounds
rGO-AuNP hybrid compound: The XPS spectrum of rGO-AuNP and rGO/AuNP samples show the
combination of gold nanoparticles with rGO based on the Au4f 5/2 peak shift of two samples compared with the
characterization peak of intrinsic Au nanometals (Au4f 7/ 2 ~ 84 eV and Au4f5/2 ~ 87.7 eV). The participation of
AuNP will fill the defects of the rGO film, enhancing the conductivity of the rGO-AuNP compound, leading to the
ammonia sensitivity of two samples are 39% and 53% respectively, outperforming the pure rGO sample (9%).
Phosphorene/Au hybrid compound: Au metal nanomaterials play two roles: AuNP material helps to fill
the defects of phosphorene film while AuNR material is considered as "a nanobridge" to link discretely distributed
phosphorene membranes that enhance the conductivity of the phosphorene/Au compound. As a result, the gas
sensing signal of the phosphorene/AuNRs sample is 41% and the phosphorene/AuNPs sample is 25%, outstanding
of the pure phosphorene-13h sample (2.5%).
The organic – inorganic hybrid compound (P3HT:rGO:MWCNTs is referred to PGC): The reconvert
process of P3HT powder to the "intrinsic" P3HT film was successful with an annealing temperature of 180 oC for
30 minutes, corresponding to a diffraction peak of 2θ = 5.9o and their ammonia sensing signal was 1.2%. When
P3HT was combined with rGO (the main material) and MWCNT, the gas sensitivity of the PGC-60 composite
sample (rGO content was 60%) were very high repeatability (5%), outperforming the sensing signal of pure P3HT
sample (1.2%). Besides, the measurement results (UV-vis spectroscopy, SEM...) and the linear extrapolation
method have shown that MWCNTs materials are "a nanobridges" while rGO materials play the role of intermediate
energy levels to help holes moving more easily inside the PGC structure.
