The Fundamental Duties, incorporated into the Indian Constitution under
Article 51A by the 42nd Amendment Act of 1976, outline the moral obligations
of every citizen to promote a sense of patriotism and uphold the unity of India.
Unlike Fundamental Rights, which are enforceable, Fundamental Duties serve
as guidelines for responsible citizenship.
There are 11 Fundamental Duties, which require citizens to:
1. Abide by the Constitution and respect its ideals and institutions, the
National Flag, and the National Anthem.
2. Cherish and follow the noble ideals of the freedom struggle.
3. Uphold and protect the sovereignty, unity, and integrity of India.
4. Defend the country and render national service when called upon.
5. Promote harmony and the spirit of common brotherhood, transcending
religious, linguistic, and regional diversity.
6. Value and preserve the rich heritage of India’s culture.
7. Protect and improve the natural environment, including forests, lakes,
rivers, and wildlife, and have compassion for living creatures.
8. Develop scientific temper, humanism, and the spirit of inquiry and
reform.
9. Safeguard public property and avoid violence.
10.Strive for excellence in all spheres of individual and collective activity.
11.Provide opportunities for education to children between the ages of 6-14
(added by the 86th Amendment Act, 2002).
Though not legally enforceable, Fundamental Duties act as a moral compass,
emphasizing collective responsibility in nation-building. They remind citizens
that rights come with corresponding duties, fostering a balanced and inclusive
democratic society.
